Presidents Message 20 July 2025

Hi to all Queenstown Rotary members and other followers of our club.

Winter seems to have set in at last with frosty mornings followed by sunny days. This is the time of year when our
numbers at meetings fall. Due in part to members migrating to warmer climates and just the
hassle of leaving a nice warm home to go out on a cold Tuesday night. Please come if you
can - once you are there the atmosphere is warm and its great to catch up on old friends and
make new ones.

We have been delighted to have Manasa and Anna Natera at recent meetings and things are under
way now to make the Salvation Army to which they both belong a corporate member. Many
thanks to Past President Ross for facilitating this process.

Peter Newport the managing editor of Crux gave a very stimulating and thought provoking
talk to us last Tuesday about the travails of the District Council and the development
pressures on Queenstown. Another very good lead into the local government elections later
in the year. I think everyone agrees we really have to do better on this front.

We have two more good speakers coming up with Anna Wilson-White from the Whakatipu Rowing Club on 22 July
and Paul Kavanaugh CEO of the Southern Lakes Sanctuary on 29 July.

Next meeting on 5 August will be our AGM after which we plan to hold a ‘mystery bottle auction’ which should
be heaps of fun for all.

Hang in there and keep warm and busy.

President Richard Bowman.

GUEST SPEAKER - PETER NEWPORT
On Tuesday evening, our guest speaker was Peter Newport, the managing editor from Cruz..

"Peter is a former reporter for Radio NZ, and a former producer with TV3. He started his career at the Otago Daily Times and TVNZ before working for Australia's Channel Nine as their London Correspondent." (Crux, 2025)

Peter resides in Queenstown and spoke about the evolution of journalism and some of the strategies used to survive, now operating as a one-man band.

Crux's Business Model and challenges: Crux was rescued by subscribers after going into incubation in November last year, suggesting that people are willing to pay for news in the Queenstown area. Despite challenges, Crux has a significant readership and uses Facebook as a funnel to attract subscribers.
