Lucy and Kayley joined us at Rotary this week. Kiwi Harvest works in Queenstown in partnership with Sustainable Queenstown. Of note, Queenstown Rotary helped Sustainable Queenstown establish 'Kiwi Harvest' 2 years ago using the $14, 000 proceeds from our annual Duck Race. It was of real interest, and satisfying, to learn more about their operation and progress made.
Kiwi Harvest is a national fresh food rescue charity operating in Queenstown and in 4 other centres (so far). They will shortly be expanding into Wanaka, Cromwell and Alexandra to broaden their work locally.
Their purpose is to:
- Rescue good food from going to landfill
- Safely distribute this edible food to NZ charities serving people in need.
Locally they rescue ‘best before’ date food, destined for landfill disposal, set aside by local supermarkets and a food distributor and distribute it to local organisations working with people in need including the Salvation Army, Happiness House, Wakatipu Youth Trust, the Queenstown Play Centre and ‘Let’s Eat.’
