By the sounds of things, things went ok for my first meeting on 1st July.  I think I’ll hang around for a bit longer!

It was a good night also, despite the rain, at the first off-site meeting last Monday at Altitude Brewery.  The favourite beer on the night was ‘The mischievous Kea’ followed by ‘The Gold Panner’ which we may have drunk dry as they run out!  We tucked into some gorgeous Blue Cod and chunky chips made out in the ‘Munch’ caravan by Ben, an ex-chef from the Rees.

A captive audience stood before founder and managing Director Eddie Gapper as he explained how a business idea came to life, the journey so far and what the future holds for Altitude Brewery.  It was encouraging to hear they have experienced a 45% increase in turnover than this time last year.  Perhaps it's the great beer they make or maybe it was the effects of coming out of lockdown! Whatever the reason or cause, it is obvious these guys have a winning recipe and a winning a(l)ttitude!

The Board had their first meeting on the 6th July and got through a lot of business to set the course for the year. There has also been a lot of work done behind the scenes by your Directors who have been organising their committees and making their plans, most of which will be reported on Tuesday. The beginning of the Rotary year is a busy time, so thank you to everyone who has attended meetings called by the Directors and for your enthusiastic participation.

Club Assembly is this Tuesday.  There is a fair bit to get through and it would be good to see you all there.  We will have the results of the Club Satisfaction Survey that about 65% of you have completed.  These results will be discussed and the outcome is a mandate by you, the members, for change or, perhaps things stay the same?  Make sure you are there to find out, your participation and opinions are important and do count.

The Budget will also be discussed, the Club financials will be furnished and the Directors will give a brief outline of their plans for the year.

Coming Up before the next Bulletin:

14 July - CLUB ASSEMBLY
21 July - Jessica Blewitt, this young woman who is a Year 13 Student at WHS, has got guts and drive and is the current NZ U19 Downhill Mountain Bike Champ.

LOCKDOWN WITH THE BEARS BOOK
The Bear Book

As Bob Dylan once sang…”The times, they are a changing”, and they certainly did as New Zealand went from level 2 on 21st March to Level 4, just 4 days later.

Down came Amanda’s Bears from the attic and for the next 42 days, I wrote a daily story and set up a display connected to each story.  Locals in Quail Rise visited the display site and people around the world followed the Bear’s adventures on a couple of Facebook pages.  While people posted how much they appreciated this small effort, I got so much pleasure seeing the young and not so young people visit the displays daily.

A big “thank you” to all those that helped keep my energy levels up and also those that brought jet skies, miniature planes, motor bikes, bee hives or lent me their favourite cuddly animals to add to  the displays…we were all in this together and you are acknowledged in the book.

Oh, the Book!  Yes.  Early on, I was asked to write a book and so here we are.  Cure Kids came on-board and will receive profits from the book sales.  They are a very special charity that funds vital medical research to help improve, extend and save the lives of kids.

Enough from me, please promote this book among your friends and family and thanks in advance for your support.

Stay healthy, safe and positive.
John
