Ryla is underway again for 2024 with a fine group of talented young people keen to gain leadership skills and personal growth in a fun learning environment.  A big thank you to Lee-Ann and her team of volunteers.

We have a busy couple of months ahead with fundraisers including the recent A & P Show parking, Ryla support, parking and door at the Home Show and the NZ Open Golf which includes parking and BBQs.  If everyone does a small amount to assist then these events will be greatly enjoyed and add to our funds.

We will host a Rotary Group from New Orleans, District 6840 from Tuesday through Friday 16 April to 19 April.  We will require 5/6 home hosts for two couples and four ladies. Please let me know if you can assist.

In April the Club celebrates 80 years of existence and we are going to celebrate in a fitting way.  More details to follow.

PRESIDENT'S BBQ - 16 JANUARY 2024
Our first get together for 2024 was held on a warm summers evening at our BBQ location on the Tucker’s Beach Trail.  A good socialising opportunity well attended by Club members, guests and partners.

FIRST MEETING - 23 JANUARY 2024
Our first meeting back focused on our club’s activities for 2024 - up until June in particular.

President Neil spoke about our NZ Golf Open commitments (car parking and BBQ’s), the Home Show (carparking and entry door duty), and the ‘Opera in the Park’ event on 11 Feb –names to Lee-Ann please of those available for carparking with complementary admission following.
Neil also spoke about a Friendship Exchange visit involving Rotarians from New Orleans, USA in April.  Home hosts are sought to accommodate and entertain our American guests (2 couples and 4 singles) for 3 nights from 16-18 April.  Those able to host, please let Neil know.

80th Celebrations - Neil and Joan spoke to the Club’s 80th celebrations in April to be held either 13 or 27 April (TBA).
Joan also spoke to our District 9999’s one day ‘conference’ on 20 April in Christchurch where the keynote speaker is 2022-23 Rotary International Immediate Past President Jennifer Jones from Canada, and our first woman International President.  There will also be a mental health focus.  More about this later with links to speakers below.

Youth - Lee-Ann talked about our Youth activities including RYLA, beginning here today (Sunday).
Rotarians are invited the RYLA BBQ (Tues 5pm), providing help with The Gully conservation project (Wed 8.15 -11.15am) and the Gala Dinner on Thursday (5.30pm).
Lee-Ann also spoke to our other Youth activities - Outward Bound, Blue Light, the Rotary National Science Fair and the Wakatipu High School Rotary Diligence Award.

Conservation - Richard Bowman talked to our conservation commitments, namely our ‘plot’ above the skyline and a working bee coming up (see details of next working below).  He also covered our Lakeland Park commitment with another project during RYLA next week, and our assisting KAPOW with their efforts at Arthurs Point.

2024 Duck Race - Tim Wiltshire talked about the Duck Race that will be held on the last Sunday in October.  He talked about improvements that his team have in mind.  More about that later.

Rotary Foundation - Joan Kiernan spoke about our giving and fundraising opportunities to meet both our Foundation and Polio Plus commitments.

Hospice Project - Stuart Maclean provided an update on our future big project in conjunction with Lions and other organisations.  He indicated that this project will still take some time to get off the ground.

District Club Survey - Keith McIntosh spoke about the survey submissions and what Rotarians in D9999 (the South Island) are saying regarding their concerns and also their expectations of District 9999’s role.  In general, Club and Rotarian respondents want District to continue in it's support roles i.e. Training & Development, Youth activities, Club coordination (the AG role), the Rotary Foundation, and being Clubs’ link to Rotary International.

The key issue of concern is declining membership and help is sought by several Clubs to attract membership and to promote Rotary in communities, including help with social media.  Also, the role of communicating information including sharing project successes and ideas of things that work.

An update on the Regionalisation Pilot Project will be provided shortly including how this will affect Clubs.

GUEST SPEAKER - AVA BOYT - 23 JANUARY 2024
Ava Boyt – our Rotary National Science Forum sponsored participant 2024.

Ava spoke to us on 23 January.  Ava was selected as the Queenstown Rotary sponsored attendee at the 2-week duration annual forum, just concluded at Auckland University.  The forum provides science students with insights into a wide range of science pathways that helps participants decide their future careers in science.  The participants resided in a University Hall of Residence.

Ava’s presentation provided a real insight into the value of our Club’s investment in this significant Rotary forum.

Modules included:
  • Nutrition
  • Food technology
  • Artificial Intelligence (AI)
  • Robotics
  • Games technology
  • Psychology
  • Chemistry
  • Physics
  • Molecular biology
  • Bio-medicine
  • Bio-engineering
  • Sports science
The forum began on a high note - the opening Guest Speaker was ‘Nano Girl’ – Dr Michelle Dickinson.  A neurologist later spoke.  Visits included the TVNZ studios and a technical visit to the Air Force facility.

Other activities included Volleyball (Ava’s red team won every game), Debating (her team reached the finals), a Talent Quest, and a Formal Dinner.  A free day to explore downtown Auckland was also included.

Ava was ‘eternally’ grateful for the opportunity that Queenstown Rotary has provided her in choosing a science career.  She is currently leaning towards Bio-Engineering in 2025.

ROTARY VISITORS - 23 JANUARY 2024
Keith & Margaret Day were guests of David Carter at Rotary last week.  Keith is a member of the Kerikeri Club and they reside some of their time in Queenstown.

Keith spoke passionately about the Rotary Foundation and of projects, involving Foundation Global Grants, that he has been involved supporting communities in the South Pacific including Vanuata.

RYLA 2024 OPENING - 28 JANUARY 2024
RYLA got underway this afternoon at the Lakeland camp on Kelvin Heights with 29 young leaders attending predominantly from Otago and Southland but from as far away as Nelson.

The event got underway with waiata’s sung by a local group and RYLA Leader Lee-Ann Murray introducing key people and outlining the week, including camp rules.  More about the week later.
