PRESIDENT'S BLOG
Our recent night at Goldridge was well attended (49) and a good opportunity to hear our MP Todd Barclay, a fellow Rotarian, share his approach helping solve our current Queenstown growth issues including ensuring that his political masters are up and close with our needs. It also provided us with a good opportunity to share the evening with our Inner Wheel colleagues. We look forward to working more closely with them.
On that note the Queenstown Marathon provides an opportunity for Rotary and Inner Wheel to work together to raise the $5,000 that we are committing to the running costs of the vehicle for the now locally based Hospice Southland Palliative Care Nurse.
Last week’s speaker, Ross James, helped us to appreciate the work that he, and his volunteer workers, do to enable the physically impaired to participate and enjoy skiing. It was rewarding to see an ‘adaptive ski’ that Rotary Queenstown contributed to through David Carter’s noteworthy fundraising initiative approximately 2 years ago.
Last week we raised $1080 in our Shelterbox collection for Central Italy at New World. That has since been topped up to the $1500 required by a generous Rotarian. That and other generous donations mean that Rotary Queenstown can currently sponsor 4 Shelterboxes for overseas disasters.
Bruce needs more helpers for the Meals on Wheels and the Blood Pressure Day. Please phone him and support these needs. See details below.
Regards
President Keith

JOB TALK 6 SEPTEMBER
Russell McGrouther was brought up on a farm and on leaving OBH, worked for an Insurance Company, a career which eventually took him to Invercargill. In the mid 60s Russell became a member of the Jaycees and rose to become NZ Vice President. In the later half of the 80s he and Ruth had the Arawata Motel and he also started working with the Funeral Directors, Frasers when required, then developed the funeral business here in Queenstown.
ROSS JAMES, GUEST SPEAKER 6 SEPT
David Carter introduced Ross James and also acknowledged the generosity of Bill Forsyth who had made a donation to Adaptive skiing. Ross James is a professional skier who has given many years helping people with disabilities to discover the joy of flying over the snow. School skiing is a big part of the winter programme and Ross introduced adaptive skiing into the school skiing programme so that children with disabilities would not have to "go to the Library or stay home" on school ski days.
