Last week's off-site meeting at Tucker Beach was a lovely occasion. We enjoyed a picnic dinner watching the sunset after we concluded the planting of 5 Remembrance native trees for the 5 Rotarians who have passed away in the last 2 years: Russell McGrouther, Geoff Smith, Lex Perkins, Colin Jack and Noel Cleland. As I read out a little about each of these men, I heard the odd, “that's right …” or “I remember that …” Since, I have been asked if we will continue to do this in the future. I am not sure. Is it something that perhaps should be considered? I will ask for some discussion at the next meeting and put it to the vote. If you are unable to be at the meeting, and you have an opinion, please email it to me so that it can be included in the decision making. Email llines@xtra.co.nz
(Please see at the bottom of the bulletin some more info and a response from Pat Cleland).

The week before last we enjoyed hearing from 2 RYLArians plus Huia. Our club sponsored one RYLArian and we also had 4 corporate sponsored participants, which our club endorsed. Former club member, and 2020 RYLArian and 2021 RYLA Team Leader, Huia Ackerman also shared about how she found the step up from participant to Team Leader and the changes and improvements she noticed between the 2 camps. It was all great feedback for me! And it was good to see Huia stepping up and growing as a leader.
Our Bunnings BBQ events have kicked off and by the looks of the photos and feedback from the members who were rostered on this first event, it all seemed like a lot of fun. Jeff Wilson and Justin Marshall were there, and a brightly dressed girl on stilts. Photos below.
The next rostered BBQ duty is on Thursday 15th and over the weekend. Thank you to everyone who is helping with this fundraiser. Thanks also to Ross Beal, his committee, and the shift supervisors.

Coming up this week: Paul Hollingsworth, General Manager of Queenstown Solar. If you have any questions about how Solar works, the benefits of solar and if it may be right for your property, then you need to come along on Tuesday. Check it out here www.queenstownsolar.co.nz
Have you asked someone this week if they want to join Rotary? You are the best advocate, so don’t keep our great Club and all the good work we do a secret. Ask someone today.
A response from Noel Cleland’s widow, Par Cleland via Ruth McGrouther - Pat rang me and was very chuffed to have a tree included for Noel. She said, “when Noel joined the Feilding Rotary Club he was presented with a book ‘Adventure in Service’ with his name in it and signed by the then Pres and Sec, dated 20 October 1960. He was aged 31 and the youngest in the Club for quite a long time. His association with Queenstown Club started 5 June 1979, he was a very active Rotarian for over 30 years and loved it, but resigned from the Canberra Woden Club as he thought they had all got too OLD and wouldn't do anything constructive! Noel, of course always had strong views on everything, and most of the time he was annoyingly right.”

Our speaker on 20 March was Joanne Skuse who had attended RYLA 2021. Jo originally came from Bath in the UK and ended up here in Queenstown working for QLDC. She talked most enthusiastically about her RYLA experience. Jo said she was very nervous but had decided to get as much as possible from it. She said “Lee-Ann very secretive about what to expect”.
The attendees were divided into Teams and each had a great diversity.
There was a full range of activities with great Guest Speakers. For example Ian Fleming had overcome a disability and had become a leader at a young age. Debbie (Debbie Swain Rewi) brought them down to earth and taught them how to be better people. Debbie spoke about unconscious bias. The speakers from Toastmasters introduced a new set of skills which she was trying out tonight.
They were involved in Community projects and her group built an orienteering course. The ShelterBox talk and display showed what could be done. They were all strongly committed to the plantings that they carried out at the Camp.
In summary RYLA for her was life changing:
Gave her much confidence to do what she set as goals in life;
A personal journey of positivity and motivation; and
Introduced her to incredible people and opened eyes to meeting new people.
Jo appreciated all the work put into the Camp by Lee-Ann and all Rotarians who helped. Joanne was supported in her talk with a video from another attendee who couldn’t make it to the meeting and also from Huia who gave her report returning to RYLA as a Team Leader.
PDG Derek Bulman works hard to ensure you enjoy a varied and interesting programme each week. He also is the one who allocates the Duties. If you have a duty and can’t attend, please make sure you find a replacement.
Meet & Greet - also includes ‘meeting set-up’. Please try and be at the venue by 5.20pm to ensure enough time to set up the meeting area. Instructions are in a folder in the Podium drawer.
The 3 Minute Talk - to make sure we run to time, please keep to between 3-5 minutes.
Apologies - Must be received to queenstownrotary@gmail.com before 12pm Tuesday at the latest. Please be aware that you will be invoiced for your meal if no apology is received. If you are unsure if you can make it each week, you can put in a permanent apology and let us know when you do come. It is easier to inform the restaurant of an extra meal than the Club having to pay for meals not claimed.
