UPDATE FROM PAST PRESIDENT LEE-ANN - APRIL 2022
Happy Easter everyone. Here’s some light reading while you relax. I hope you enjoyed some Easter sunshine. The nights and mornings have turned for sure, so we can soon start looking forward to winter and all the fun that brings.

A Text Poll was conducted last week (Thursday 14th). At the time of publishing this Bulletin - about 65% of the membership responded.  The results of the Poll are below.

As we are now in the Orange traffic light position, and as a result of members asking ‘when we will return to meetings?’, plus the recent Poll, normal club activities will resume as of this week.  Starting with a social dinner meeting at ‘The Crown’ on Tuesday 19th, we will then head back to the Holiday Inn from the 26th April.  If you are uncomfortable about this, and wish to wait a bit longer, please email queenstownrotary@gmail.com to put in an extended apology.  Otherwise weekly apologies will need to be given from the 26th onwards.

We have also booked the official Polio+ Movie, ‘The Duke,’ for Tuesday 3rd May.  See more info below.  This is an important fundraiser as we missed doing it last year due to COVID.  The 69 seat theatre has been booked and we must sell a minimum of 50 tickets to make this work.  So, please support it by buying a ticket or two.  Ask your family, friends, neighbours and anyone else you think might enjoy this film. Just $25pp for the movie and then an optional all you can eat Pizza dinner at Winnies afterwards ($20pp).
See below for more info.  Order your tickets asap – email queenstownrotary@gmail.com

NEXT MEETING - 19 APRIL 2022
OUTSIDE, UNDER THE ROOF AND WITH HEATERS ON.

You asked for it, and a good turn-out is expected - please come along, support a local business and have that long awaited catch up with your fellow Rotarians.

LAST MEETING - 5 APRIL 2022
Another lovely evening was had - down by the Arrow River at O’Callaghan Park. The rain kept away until the very last moment.

We facetimed with our guest speaker, Brooke Hart, an inspirational young Invercargill woman who spoke about her battles with her mental health and the struggle she has faced to find appropriate support and help. Brooke was articulate and brave, and really touched on our heart strings.

Brooke is kayaking the length of the Wakatipu soon to raise awareness and funds for mental health.

Brooke has been introduced to us by Invercargill South Rotary Club. Brooke spoke to this club and there wasn’t a dry eye in the house. Brooke’s personal journey has been tough but she is getting better now. Going through this struggle has made her realise how hard it is to get help, and she is passionate about creating awareness of the acute lack or support and services for people who struggle with their mental health in the Southland area.

Brooke has set up a ‘Give-A-Little’ page and is accepting donations. Brook will be in Queenstown the week of April 16-22 to attempt her challenge of kayaking the length of Lake Wakatipu, i.e. 80km from Glenorchy to Kingston.

Please consider making a donation -

A few words from Brooke

Hi everyone,
I am Brooke, I am 20 and I was diagnosed with anxiety and depression. I have had many rough days and multiple hospital admissions but I am finally on my way to improving my mental state.
On my journey I have become very passionate about Mental Health and Suicide. I now have my heart set on becoming an advocate for these topics and what is the best way to start doing this other than fundraising. The 4 charities I’m fundraising for are:

- The Mental Health Foundation NZ
- I Am Hope
- Lifeline
- Voices of hope

My fundraiser involves just me, myself and I (along with a support boat for health and safety reasons) kayaking the length of Lake Wakatipu. That is 80km, Glenorchy to Kingston. The reason I am doing this is to raise money for Mental Health. It will be physically and mentally demanding, which is what it like to struggle with mental health.

I am hoping to complete this challenge around Easter time in 2022. It would be greatly appreciated if I could have your support and if possible I would love if you could donate. It will be going to such an important cause that is close to my heart and many others in NZ.

Thank you so much
Brooke

She's done it!  An incredible effort, completing Glenorchy to Kingston  in 12 hours and 5 minutes.

You can still support Brooke and donate to her Give-a-Little page, which closes at the end of this month.

Thank you to the respondents for your participation.

MOVIE NIGHT FUNDRAISER - 3 MAY 2022
FOUNDATION POLIO+  MOVIE NIGHT FUNDRAISER - ‘The Duke’

The Polio+ movie night fundraiser is back!
2020 was the last movie night (‘I am Woman’ - the Helen Reddy Story) so it would be fantastic to sell all the tickets and make up for lost time and funds for Polio+.

Get a group together, ask your friends, family, neighbours and contacts.  After all the social isolation and hamstringing of the past 2 years, our movie nights are fun and a great opportunity to get out for a night at the flicks and enjoy some long overdue fellowship.

OPTIONAL:  After the movie we are booked in next door at Winnies Pizza & Bar - $20pp (vegetarian options available).

The price is the same as in 2020 and we have 3 options:
  1. Ticket only - $25pp
  2. Ticket & Dinner - $45pp
  3. Meet for Dinner only - $20pp
As it is only 2 weeks away, please RSVP asap to -
(Other than vegetarian, please advise of any other dietary requirements)

POLIO+ & WORLD IMMUNISATION WEEK 2022
POLIO PLUS and World Immunization week - 24-30 April

The eradication of polio is one of Rotary’s longest standing and most significant efforts.  In fact, it is the largest public health initiative the world has ever seen.  And it was started by Rotarians – ‘ordinary people doing extraordinary things!’

The ‘plus’ is something else that is provided as a part of the polio eradication campaign.  It might be a hand-operated tricycle or access to water.  It might be additional medical treatment, bed nets, or soap.  A 2010 study estimates that Vitamin A drops given to children, at the same time as the polio vaccine, have prevented 1.25 million deaths by decreasing susceptibility to infectious diseases.

But the ‘plus’ also refers to the amazing infrastructure established by the programme that will be available to deliver healthcare and for disease surveillance and data collecting long after we reach our goal of polio eradication.  In fact it has already started. During the Ebola and Influenza pandemic outbreaks, and COVID-19, that infrastructure and resources have been utilised to save lives.

During World Immunization Week - 24-30 April, let’s advocate for polio eradication and the importance of vaccines to the health and well-being of our communities.

Vaccines are one of the greatest advances of modern medicine.  They’re safe, effective, and save millions of lives each year.  Our progress in the fight to end polio is proof that vaccines work.

The Global Polio Eradication Initiative estimates that the polio vaccine has saved more than 20 million children around the world from paralysis.  We need to continue vaccinating children against polio because, as long as the poliovirus circulates anywhere, it is a threat everywhere.

All contributions will be matched 2-to-1 by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
Rotary districts can give District Designated Funds (DDF) to PolioPlus to help meet our goal of raising $50 million each year to eradicate polio.

All funds raised from the upcoming Movie Night will go to Polio+
You can also make a personal donation to PolioPlus:
  • Donate to PolioPlus here -  Donate
  • OR via the Club bank account, reference your name and POLIO  -  01-0867-0722903-00

Who is interested to join Lee-Ann & Incoming President Grant at this awards night?
Please see Lee-Ann for more details and tickets.

We have been the lucky recipients of YPNZ grants in the past and have an application in for another one.  The club matches whatever grant $$ we receive, and these funds go towards supporting WHS students on such courses as Bluelight programmes such as The Spirit of Adventure or Life Skills as well as other opportunities like Outward Bound.

The Spirit of the Wakatipu Awards are an opportunity to recognise and celebrate those individuals, organisations, groups and corporate entities who put their hand up and contribute in a philanthropic way to the Wakatipu community and who hold true to the values that collectively define what is unique about the place we call home.
