PRESIDENT'S BLOG
It is always disappointing to receive resignations from members of our club. In the past fortnight I have received resignations from Sheena Haywood-Brent and Hal Shaw. Hal has not been well for the last few months and we wish him our very best for a speedy recovery.
On a positive note David Andrews , previously a member of the Takapuna Club and recently moved to Queenstown with his wife Debbie, visited both club meetings this week. David has decided to join Queenstown Rotary and is recommended to us by his Takapuna President Elect. David’s preference is to attend the NRG meetings and the occasional dinner meeting. It is great that we can now provide these options. Hopefully his wife Debbie will join us also.
District Governor Janice Hughes visited the NRG group yesterday as part of her annual club visits. Discussion included the attributes of the Wanaka Club and their current “formula” for success. I intend to visit the Wanaka Club shortly to learn more about their culture for myself. Janice will visit the Tuesday dinner meeting on 18 October
Regards
President Keith
MEETING 9 AUGUST
With no guest speaker, several members contributed to make a very interesting meeting.
Martin Chappell spoke about the Global Grants the Club is doing in India.
Eric Lee gave his thoughts on the traffic flow in Queenstown and encouraged members to ask prospective councillors what they would like to do about it.
Kerry Dunlop told us about his wife Kit's positive experience in Sydney when she had to have a pacemaker inserted urgently.
Geoff Dalzell described his recent trip to Bali. If you think traffic is bad here, you haven't been to Bali.
MEETING 16 AUGUST
As Sergeant on 16th August, Bruce Boivin cleverlylinked the fines tomembers' sporting prowess. It was surprising what an athletic bunch we are/were.
We welcomed David Andrews as a visitor to our club. David was a member of Takapuna Rotary before moving to Queenstown.
President Keith announced that regretfully Hal Shaw has resigned due to health issues. In the past, Hal has been a very active member of our club and we all wish Hal best wishes for the future.
30th August meeting will be held at Goldridge in Frankton Road. Cost $25 per head. Speaker Todd Barclay, MP for Clutha /Southland. Partners and visitor's night. Parking on the Tennis Court as per changeover night. Guest numbers tobonnie@rilean.co.nz as usual.
President Keith is hoping that the marshalling for the Air New Zealand Marathon in November will be one on our big income producers. Please gather adult friends and family and send your expression of interest with numbers to bruceandpatjefford@xtra.co.nz or go to our website registration page Marathon Volunteers
Please send any change of contact details to Chris Taylor.

PAUL ALLISON GUEST SPEAKER 16 AUGUST
Paul Allison was not to be missed. He was one of the most entertaining guest speakers we have had at our meetings. Chair of the Central Lakes Trust, recipient of the Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit - for services to sport, marathon runner, (he came 23rd in a field of more than 27,000 runners in the New York Marathon.), renowned sports commentator and very funny man, he kept us hanging on every word. He started by acknowledging the work of service clubs
Last Wednesday I visited the Club Rotario de Quito Equinoccio for their weekly meeting. A small club with 21 members, recently established, it is one of seven Rotary clubs in Quito. I was asked to talk, about my background and our Queenstown Club.
Chris Taylor gave us Part 2 of his Job Talk. After being in the fur trade, he moved into deer velvet export, sending frozen velvet to Taiwan at $US500 per pound. He then had a deer velvet processing plant in Christchurch where is has the velvet dried and exported to Korea.
Later it became clear that it was cheaper to freeze the product and send it to China for processing. He also had a deer recovery business with 100 chillers around the South Island. He eventually merged with Wilson Neil

COOKBOOK FUNDRAISER – time is of the essence
First up, I’m really looking forward to getting out to see you all during the club visits, which start this month. You've had a wee heads up that we are working on a fundraiser to create a beautiful coffee table cookbook with the Rotary connection. The idea is to match great food with your Rotary stories to showcase what we do in a new and unique way. We really would love each club to supply a recipe for our district cookbook, and outline the connection that the dish has to a rotary story that you would like to tell. Feel free also to prepare said dish for Clayton and me when we drop by. That way we will be able to tell how it needs to be created for the photography session.
While each recipe needs to have some special connection to Rotary and your club, that connection can be whatever you want it to be. I’m intrigued to see how you use your imaginations on that front, and to read all the stories behind the recipes.
Putting together a cookbook, especially one of the standard we’re aiming for, is no flash in the pan, and requires much planning and staging.
So, to get things in train, what we need at this stage is for your club to send in:
Your recipe (remember, this is going in a quality cookbook, so all measurements need to be accurate, and all instructions crystal clear.)
The story behind the recipe – what is the recipe’s special connection to Rotary and your club? (We’ll be editing the stories at our end, so the main objective is ensuring that all of the main details and key background are down on paper – it doesn’t have to be Hemingway!)
PARTING THOUGHT 1
The person who doesn't make mistakes is unlikely to make anything. (Editor has forgotten who!)
PARTING THOUGHT 2
