Russell's Ramblings

Just like a change of Government we have now entered a new Rotary Year and the honeymoon period is just about over.  I am moving to  place my stamp on how I see Queenstown Rotary as we are and what we need to achieve to proceed further.  I’m delighted that the Board/Committee system that has been set up appears to be working well and that many of the members are now having the opportunity of meeting and getting to know their fellow Rotarians on a more personal basis during these meetings away from our regular Tuesday night.

I have likewise called the first Board Meeting for the year at our home rather than being at one of the Five Mile Board Rooms.  I’m sure that with a little tipple and some nibbles we shall still be able to conduct the business required of us and further promote Rotary within our community. Offers from other Board members to host a Board Meeting at some stage during the year have already been received.  You may remember that this idea was mentioned when Past President Bruce Boivin recently spoke about his year as President in 1994/95.

As some may be aware there was a minor glitch in the last Bulletin when only about half of my address at Changeover was printed, the full episode is now included in this issue.  (sorry for the re-print).

Whilst only a few of us working on the Committee have been fully aware of what the 'Night of AdEaters' programme is all about Monica and Joan’s presentation during our meeting on 10 July certainly brought all those attending up to date.  Like so many projects a small team is involved in the general preparation and it is not until closer to the event that the entire membership become involved.  In this case note in your diaries that you will be required to assist in some way, initially assisting with promoting ticket sales, then on Friday 14 September setting up the Memorial Centre, Saturday 15 and Sunday 16 assisting at the event.  As I mentioned after their presentation, Joan especially has been living, working, sleeping and having nightmares about AdEaters and we have to commend her for the time and effort so far and now it’s time for us all to offer our support to what is a completely new fundraising idea for Queenstown Rotary in particular and for New Zealand in general.

I ask you all to become part of this exciting and ambitious Queenstown Rotary project.

Whilst I may still be in the honeymoon time of being your President, I’m really encouraged with the support that I have been receiving by my trusty Board members, the Committee Chairs and the membership in general. As I emphasised at Change Over, I have been elected as your President for this current year and that hopefully, with my guidance and more especially with your assistance, we shall be able to work through and enjoy another great Rotary year and at the same time we shall prosper as a Club and be assisting our great Wakatipu community as we have done so since 1944.

GUEST SPEAKER

Our guest speaker last Tuesday evening was Rhodes Donald whose subject was life after farming.  He works at Polson Higgs, a well known accounting firm in Dunedin.  He has interviewed a number of farming couples about their retirement from farming.  Many of his comments could apply to any of us.

Don’t leave the decision to retire too late.  While financial security helps, good health is far more important to enjoy the thirty years that you might have after you retire.  For succession to a family business, good communication is important.  Rhodes emphasised the importance of knowing where you are going to live, to ensure that you have a social life to help avoid depression and to continue to have a purpose in life.

THE NIGHT OF THE ADEATERS

The New Zealand premiere of The Night of the AdEaters is coming to town - Ads so good we made them the main course!
