I hope everyone has had a good Easter break with friends and family.
It was good to go along to the barbecue of Mr and Mrs Murray and help celebrate their marriage. Great weather, good company and good food and wine.

We have an exciting non-Tuesday meeting coming up that has been arranged by Ross Beal and he will outline it to us this coming Tuesday. Ross has done all the organizing so I will not steal his thunder before the meeting.

We have some more prospective members in the offing and thanks to Gabrielle who has been working tirelessly on this.
Note: We will be having our last wilding pine working bee for the season on the Saturday 22 nd of thismonth. It will also be the last day of operation of the gondolas before the major upgrade so may be a little chaotic getting to and from our plot. We will book the Bavarian for lunch when we have confirmed numbers.

With only two months to change over. It still seems as though the to do list has not dropped in the slightest. It is good to belong to a club that is so active and so well supported by its members.
Regards

CONNECTING WITH COMMUNITY - RESCUE HELICOPTER
Visit with the Lakes District Air Rescue Trust - LDART -Queenstown

Club members visited the LDART Helicopter Hanger last night to learn more about this amazing service.  We contributed the funds raised from the Duck Race of 2022.

Prior to the visit, we stopped off for a meal at the Frankton Holiday Inn, where Bob Young, Community Liaison Officer outlined the helicopter services and funding.

In summary:
Since 2018, LDART manages two machines at the hanger with twelve people employed (over various shifts), including the helicopter pilots, the medics and service personnel.  The LDART does the funding of the on-board equipment and training.  The equipment includes navigation gear, thermal imaging (can spot a rabbit from 4km) and all the medical equipment.

Medical Equipment displayed, monitors @ $40,000, ventillators @55,000,
and CPR machine etc. All run by internal batteries

There are 3 main activities:
  • Hospital transfers, (to Christchurch, Kew or Dunedin), funded by Te Whatu Ora
  • Search and rescue, funded by police.
  • Emergency services, funded by ACC
Pierre the Medic on cables completing a search and rescue mission.

At the hanger, Pierre (Medic) gave us a tour including a viewing of the helicopter, equipment and a video of some missions.

Approximately $400,000. is needed annually by the trust.  They were very thankful of our contribution.

INVITATION
3 April , 2023

Dear fellow Lower South Island Rotary Club Presidents

This year the Rotary Club of Dunedin is celebrating 100 years since its founding in April 1923, and we are holding a celebration dinner on 29 April at 6.30pm at Toitū Otago Settlers Museum in the Josephine Foyer.

As you will know, the Rotary Club of Dunedin was the founding club in our district, and helped charter many of the other clubs in the former 9980 lower South Island district.  As  such this 100 year old club is the ‘parent’ or ‘grandparent’ of your club!

Over the century our Clubs have played an unparalleled role in supporting and developing charitable and voluntary activities and developments in the city and area, and we believe this is something to be celebrated.

This message is an invitation to you and all of your club members to attend the celebration dinner. Our guest of honour is Rotarian and former Governor General Sir Anand Satyanand. Tickets for this special occasion are $100 each, which includes a pre-dinner drink and a quality dinner, an entertaining MC, an anniversary book launch and our guest speaker.

We’d also like to invite you, if you wish, to take this opportunity to contribute to the centenary activities of the Club with a donation of say $50 or $100. Our projects this year include a major upgrade to Dunedin’s Rotary Park, a wonderful recreational facility for the city.

Please respond as soon as possible and not later than 15 April by return email to myself (fiona.robin@xtra.co.nz) indicating how many tickets you would like, and what donation you may be able to give. I will let you know the arrangements for payment and ticketing.
Yours sincerely
Fiona Nyhof
Rotary Dunedin President, 2022-23
