PRESIDENTS BLOG

In India, only 59% of schools have separate toilets for girls.  Some schools have only a single, not very clean, toilet.

Single toilets increase the risk of not only disease transmission, but also sexual harassment.  This leads to girls - especially adolescent girls who in any case skip school for five to six days every month during menstruation - dropping out of school completely.

The school completion rates in India are just 34% for girls, compared to 49% for boys.  Proper sanitation facilities in schools are critical for improving the rate of school completion for girls.

When we talk about improving access to education, few people think about water and toilets.  Yet these basic human rights are inextricably and fundamentally linked.  Until students have clean water to drink and a safe, private place to go to the bathroom at school, girls will continue to be at best shortchanged in their education and at worst simply not getting any.  This hinders forever their ability to achieve their full potential.

Our club has, in the past, been a champion of building toilet blocks in India under the expert guidance of Past District Governor Martin Chappell.  It is probably time that we started initiating these projects again!

Our club needs a water and sanitation champion.

UNSUNG HERO'S AWARDS
Tuesday 24 April was our inaugural "Unsung Heroes" Awards function.  We have introduced these awards to recognise members of our community who have selflessly given much of their time with passion to make our community a better place.  The awards were presented by Mayor Jim Boult, also an Honorary Member of our club.

President Monica and Kerry Dunlop, Chair of our Recognition and Awards Committee, welcoming Jim and Karen Boult.

Marty Black recognised for his service to St. John and water safety.

Lyall McGregor recognised for his service to the RSA, Queenstown Volunteer Fire Brigade (retired) and music.

Stu Ide recognised for his service to fire safety education, particularly youth, and to the Frankton Volunteer Fire Brigade.

ROTARY INFORMATION NIGHT
On Monday 23 April we held a 'Rotary Information Night' at Franks Cafe, Remarkables Park to inform and encourage potential members and "friends" about Rotary and our club.  Led by Steve McLean and Derek Bulman, the key speakers were John Prendergast (a Past District Governor) and Nick Wood (Past President Cromwell Club) who told their unique Rotary stories.  We are hopeful of inducting several new members shortly. Photos show current members in discussions with potential Rotarians.

ART AUCTION NIGHT
Tuesday 17 April involved our Art Auction and Dinner held at the Queenstown Golf Club which attracted a large audience from within our club and community.  The event netted over $8,000 for our Rotary Foundation.  We recognise the considerable efforts of Brian McPherson (himself a painter) and Joan Kiernan in organising and managing this event. A special thanks goes to our auctioneer Brendan Quill for his valuable contribution (and entertainment) and to the corporate organisations that supported the event.

CLUB ASSEMBLY

The very mention of Club Assembly causes groans and a rush to find other things to do on that night.  We traditionally get a poor turnout for Club Assembly which is a great pity.  Club Assembly is a chance for the members to tell the Board what they like, what they do not like, what they want more of and what they want less of.  The Club Assembly is the cox in the boat of the cub!  We will be having a Club Assembly on May 15th and the Board would appreciate if as many members as possible could attend.  President Monica will give an account of her year and ascertain from the members what worked and what did not.  This will be a great help to both Russell and Ross in setting their program.  Afterwards both Russell and Ross will give a brief outline of how they see things developing going forward.

CLUB RUNNER UPDATE
CLUBRUNNER UPDATE - YOU CAN NOW FIND CONTACT INFORMATION FOR ROTARIANS NZ-WIDE

There's a new New Zealand-wide member search link on the District 9980 ClubRunner website. You can now search for any Rotarian in any Club in New Zealand provided their club has listed their details on a ClubRunner website.

How? Go to the District website (www.rotarydistrict9980.org) and log in. Then go to the Rotarians' Area and choose Member Search in the MEMBERSHIP area.
  • Use the same user id and password as you use for your Club website.
  • Forgotten (or never had) your user id and password? Click HERE for help.
  • Still having problems? Contact John Barton - District 9980 ICT Support, Rotary Club of Timaru, (03) 686 2848 | (027) 222 7866, jrcbarton@gmail.com
USING MEMBER SEARCH:
  • The Search screen looks like the image below.
  • You don't have to put anything in the "District" and "Club" boxes, but they help to reduce the time it takes for the search and the number of "hits" you get. (Do a search for "Smith" with blank "District" and "Club" boxes and you get arount 90 "matches").
  • You can use the "More options" settings to further narrow the search.
