I said in the last Bulletin that winter seemed content to hang around.  It certainly did just that when we woke to a winter wonderland this week.  School holidays have boosted the population which is great and helps ease some of the pain for some.  However, our thoughts are still with those business owners who are still, and have been affected by COVI-19 along with the many unemployed in our town.

We have had a few exciting Rotary nights though and it was fabulous to induct 3 new members to the club during DG Dylan Murray’s visit this week.  Fiona van Waveren Wilshire, Tim Wilshire and Hamish Murray are our newest Rotarians.  They all bring specialised skills and knowledge to the club; Fiona is a digital specialist, Tim is an Accountant & Tax Advisor and Hamish is in Corporate Finance with specialist computer skills.  Welcome to you all.

Further good news is the upcoming inductions on October 13th of 2 more members, Rebecca Lund, teacher at WHS, and Scott Robertson, a lawyer at AWS who is the current Toastmaster’s President and an accomplished cricketer.

The Lakeland Park Camp Bouldering Wall Project is almost complete.  The official opening is on Saturday 17th October at 11am.  Join in the celebrations of this successful Rotary Community Project.  Camp Managers Ross and Lynette, and the camp trustees, are putting on a sausage sizzle and a Mountain Scene reporter will be there to capture the event.

There is no meeting this Tuesday as the popular Foundation Dinners will be happening.  Some will be held on other nights as pe-arranged with your Hosts.  Hosts are $30pp and usually provide the main course.  Guests are $45pp and bring smaller courses.  Your Host will let you know what they want you to do, or you can call them to ask.  You can pay the Host on the night or you can pay by internet banking (be sure to clearly put your name and what it’s for in the reference etc).  It is BYO liquid refreshments.

REMINDER:
We have a new bank account with the ANZ  -  01-0867-0722903 00
(Please remember to update if you have saved it to your bank list of payees)

The Cardrona Distillery Tour and dinner at the Cardrona Pub is on 3rd November.  We will be having dinner with the Wanaka Rotary Club.  A menu sample and prices will be provided to you all soon.

The tour is $25per person, however the Distillery have very generously offered it to us for free if we put the money towards one of our charities.  Therefore, it has been agreed the money will go to Shelter Box.  You can choose to still pay $25 per person or you may pay $25 per couple.  We decided to do this because it is a big financial outlay this week with the movie night on the following Thursday.  Thank you all for agreeing to still run these 2 important fundraising events in the same week.  It will be a busy week!

The Polio+ Movie night is “I Am Woman.” It is a biotopic about the rise and life of Helen Reddy, and the timing couldn’t be more poignant as we learnt of the passing of this iconic Australian songstress this week.  So, to agree to continue with this Polio+ Movie Night was the right one by the club.

Save the date, November 5th, at the Reading Theatre.  Please be there before 5.30pm.

Remember to invite your friends and family. We have the 69 seat cinema and it would be fabulous to have a sold-out event.  For those who wish to do so, afterwards, we will be heading next door to Winnies for Pizza, beer or wine or dessert and coffee.  I am trying to secure a set price per head, so will let you know soon the details of this.

The tickets will be pre-sold, similar to how we did it for the debate night.  A sheet will be passed around on 13th and 20th October.  Or you can email Joan or Derek.  There will only be door-sales, if there are spare tickets.

Remember there is NO meeting this Tuesday 6 October.

Reminder:
Have you asked someone this week if they want to join Rotary?  You are the best advocate, so don’t keep our great Club and all the good work we do a secret.  Ask someone today.

Yours in Rotary
President Lee-Ann

NEW MEMBER INDUCTIONS - 29 September 2020
3 new members were inducted to our membership last week.  Fiona van Waveren Wilshire, Tim Wilshire and Hamish Murray were inducted by PDG Derek Bulman and current DG Dylan Murray (Waimate).  We warmly welcome Fiona, Tim and Hamish to our friendly team serving our Wakatipu community.

Queenstown Rotary’s diversity of membership is on the increase.  Pictured here with new members Fiona, Tim and Hamish are Huia Ackerman, Darren Rewi, President Lee-Ann Lines and District Governor Dylan Murray.

DG's VISIT - 29 September 2020
District Governor Dylan Murray, from the Waimate Club, visited us last Tuesday accompanied by his wife Rebecca (also a Rotarian) and their 3 young children.  Rebecca is also a Rotarian and is on the Board of Shelterbox N.Z.

Dylan spoke about the opportunities that COVID has created, for us, particularly in use of IT connectivity (e.g. Zoom) - including with other clubs.  He also spoke of his introduction to Rotary, an organisation that he knew nothing about, by being  ‘approached’ when new to Waimate.

He encouraged new ‘styles’ of Rotary, clubs being more attractive to new members, and the importance of getting new members involved in projects.  He emphasised that enthusiasm is contagious, important to club vibrance and attractiveness, and publicising our successes.

A new Australasian “Rotary Give Every Child a Future” project to distribute 100,000 vaccines to children in 9 counties across the Pacific, against 3 diseases, (in partnership with UNICEF) was also outlined.  It is to be a project to celebrate 100 years of Rotary in New Zealand and Australia.

POLIO+ MOVIE NIGHT FUNDRAISER
Dubbed “The Queen of Housewife Rock,” 1970s Australian songstress Helen Reddy’s 1971 song “I Am Woman” was the unofficial anthem of the women’s rights movement then and now, for International Women’s Day.  The song gives voice to female empowerment with the unforgettable refrain, “I am woman, hear me roar.”

Tilda Cobham-Hervey plays the Australian musician and activist icon.  In 1966 Reddy landed in New York with her three-year-old daughter, a suitcase and $230.  Within weeks she was broke.  Within five years she was a superstar, the first ever Australian Grammy Award winner, and an icon of the 1970s feminist movement.

Raising funds for Rotary’s #1 cause, Rotary has the exclusive rights to show the movie in NZ cinemas during October and November.  This year’s Polio Movie Event is being run as a tribute to Sir Clem Renouf, the RI President for 1978/79 who hailed from Ingham, Queensland.  Sir Clem, who passed away on 11th June, was a giant in Rotary’s history and was one of the leading figures in our fight to end polio.

The Movie event will be held at the Reading Theatre, at 6pm on November 5th.  Please try to arrive by 5.15-5.30pm.  You must be seated by 5.50pm.  The cinema bar and cafe will be open.  Afterwards, we will go for Pizza and beer or wine at Winnies, next door.  More info and a price per head will follow.

Remember to invite family and friends and make a night of it.  JUST $25 PER PERSON.  For bookings and enquiries, contact -
Joan on 021 356 265 or joan.kiernan@queenstownnz.net
or Derek Bulman on 021 685 520 or bulman@twinpeaks.co.nz

THE GREAT DEBATE - 22 September 2020
Several members and partners had dinner together at Brazz on 22 September before attending the debate hosted by the Queenstown Chambre of Commerce.  Senior politicians Grant Robinson (Labour), Paul Goldsmith (National), David Seymour (Act), James Shaw (Green Party) and Fletcher Tabuteau (NZ First) fronted questions by TV3 Political Editor, Tover O’Brien, as well as the audience.

THANKS FROM YASMIN KIDD

I want to thank you for offering myself such an incredible experience.  I'm truely so grateful to Rotary and yourself for everything.  On the trip the weather was great, I learnt so many new things and I meet some incredible people.  I can see why it is a once in a lifetime opportunity, I got to do things I never would of thought I could do ever.  The Steinlager 2 voyage is definitely a memory I am always going to cherish.  Once again Thank-you for your generosity.
