Russell's Ramblings

At our last meeting we were entertained and well informed by four students of Wakatipu High School on various topics pertaining to the Rotary 4 Way Test.  This was a great night enjoyed by all and our successful contestant Gracie will progress to the Central Otago Area Final and hopefully onto the District Final at our District Conference in Oamaru at the end of April.  Once again, the students of Wakatipu High excelled with their individual presentations.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who assisted provide the 'Relay for Life' breakfast.  This was a great time to put the name of Rotary into the public arena and being seen as supporting this great event.  Special thanks to Ashley for co-ordinating the early morning gathering.

Now onto a personal matter, last weekend I was assisting one of my sons to tidy up one of his brother’s rental properties in Invercargill.  Whilst loading the trailer with rubbish I tripped and fell, landing on my right arm.  This didn’t appear to be a problem until we returned home on Saturday night and I realised that my right hand was not operating as it should have been.  I have damaged the Radial Nerve which has temporarily put my right hand out of action.  Hopefully this will be rectified sooner rather than later, so if you receive a Gobbly Gook email from me that’s the reason.  I’ll try to double or triple check them before clicking the Go Button.

Really looking forward to this Tuesday’s Hangi at Darren and Debbie Rewi’s home on Grant Road.

Please let Debra at Rilean know especially of additional numbers attending.
See you there.
Regards Russell

NEW MEETING VENUE

We have held our most recent meetings at a new venue on the floor beneath the Wild Thyme Restaurant. Its advantages include escaping from the noise from the casino and the kitchen and there are no restrictions to youth visiting our meetings. Upstairs we are required to apply for dispensations every time school students attend our meetings in the casino environment.

RELAY FOR LIFE BREAKFAST BBQ

Another Queenstown Rotary activity - an early 6:30 am start for Rotarians catering breakfast for participants in the Cancer Society 'Relay for Life' at the Lake Hayes Pavilion on Sunday 17 March. It was Queenstown Rotary's opportunity to assist the Cancer Society in their local significant fundraising activity on such a perfect dawning morning. Busy chefs and kitchen staff are seen here taking a break for their own breakfast.

TUCKER BEACH TRAIL WORKING BEE

Hello everyone

I just want to thank the 13 Rotarians who turned up on Saturday 23 March to enable a very productive working bee on our Rotary Tucker Beach Trail. The talent and the equipment that they brought to the site meant that everyone deserved to enjoy the morning tea. Ashley came especially for the mousetraps!!

The track is certainly being enjoyed by the community as was witnessed with the various people who walked or biked past our team. Their appreciation of Rotary's gift of this trail was regularly expressed.

The planting of 80 more shrubs and the maintenance of the already planted 220 will be appreciated more as they grow over the time to come.

Cheers

Kerry Dunlop

SPEECH COMPETITION

Four Year 13 Wakatipu High School girls entered the Rotary speech competition – Gracie Hansby, Katya Moss, Maddie Jones and Millie Fox.

The girls spoke for 5-6 minutes on any topic that they, the contestants, felt is current, interesting and important.  However, the speech HAD to be based on the application of the Four Way Test, with the principles of this running through the entire speech:

"Is it the TRUTH? ...  Is it FAIR to all concerned? …  Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS? …  Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned"

The winner was Gracie Hansby, 2nd was Maddie Jones and 3rd Katya Moss.  Gracie will be going forward to the Area Competition to be held on 2 April at the Wanaka Recreation Centre.  Gracie will be accompanied by our Youth Chair Lee-Ann Lines and all members are invited to attend.  Please let Lee-Ann know if you wish to go.

If Gracie is successful at the Area Competition, she will go through to represent Central Otago, as well as WHS and our Club, at the Regional Finals at our District Conference in Oamaru on 26-28 April.

FUNDING QUEENSTOWN ROTARY
Funding Queenstown Rotary - Chris Taylor's recent presentation to members
I want to talk a little about funding for Rotary and in particular our Club.  Members have asked valid questions about fundraising and I shall attempt to explain our rationale.

Club Subscriptions:
We have charged $240 this year.  It principally goes in per capita amounts to:
·      Rotary International Dues $90
·      District 9980 Dues $100
·      Rotary Down Under for magazine $35
So $225 of $240 goes straight back out.
The balance pays for accounting fees, Club Runner (net of any sponsorship), our PO Box and the like.

Meal Surplus:
Most weeks we have a meal surplus which funds wine for the raffles and meals for our invited guests.

Rotary Foundation:
Additionally we contribute to the Rotary Foundation.
Each incoming President commits an amount to RF- say $100 general fund and $25 extra to Polio Plus.
We pay this through our Charitable Trust and the Club raises funds to repay the Trust by way of our Foundation Dinners or, in the case of last year, an Art Auction.
The point is that we do not levy the membership for the Rotary Foundation but raise funds separately.
Last year we exceeded the commitment by giving extra to the District Rotary Foundation fund.
This year we raised money through a movie night and Joan Kiernan proposes dinners and an auction to raise the balance.

Our Rotary Trust:
In the past we have held specific fundraising for our Charitable Trust but the Club has committed to expenditure outside of the Trust’s objects.  For example, the Club is giving 'Fountain of Peace' $4,000 pa for 3 years.  We also want to give money to other Dunedin Club International Projects being a building for a cyclone ravaged kindergarten in Vanuatu and for a foot clinic in Samoa.
This year our club Directors have decided that Club raised funds through, for example, the Home Show ($1,000) and NZ Open BBQ’s (net $4,000) are to be held by the Club for these purposes.

Club Financial Position:
Last year the Club Reserves were run down mostly by the loss associated with the AdEaters event.
In round figures we have $20,000 of which $6,000 is in trust for two projects and we have another $4,000 for 'Fountain of Peace' to pay next Rotary year commencing 1 July.
I will gladly answer any questions.

DISTRICT 9980 CONFERENCE

The McGrouther's and McIntosh's are attending the District Conference in Oamaru next month. Will any of you join us? This is an opportunity to be involved in the historic part of Oamaru town and to meet friends as well as listen to top inspirational speakers. There is space available. See or contact President Russell or Keith Mc as soon as possible.

If you will be away, or for some other reason you cannot do your duty on the nominated day, it is your responsibility as soon as possible, and certainly no later than the Monday night before the meeting, to arrange a substitute.  A swap with the person who has the duty the next week is suggested.
Please be there by 5.25 pm if you are on Reception or Meet & Greet.
