This blog comes from Chicago, the murder capital of the USA, and known locally as Ch-Iraq.  At this point I have refrained from participating.

We arrived on Wednesday afternoon following a 15 hour direct flight from Auckland.  Our flight path took us over a snow covered downtown Chicago and a circuit over Lake Michigan before touching down at O’Hare Airport.  By the time you clear customs and immigration you are immediately aware that the USA can no longer claim to be the “Land of the Free”.

Today I have been in Milwaukee on a factory visit, followed by a tour of the Milwaukee Brewery.  The food was good, however I have no idea what the beer tasted like.

Tomorrow I am attending a College Football match and then to the United Centre for a Chicago Bulls v Brooklyn Nets Basketball match.  On Sunday Night, an Ice Hockey Game.

Monday I will turn up at 1516 Sherman Avenue, Evanston, for a look and maybe a chat.  For those that don’t recognise the address - Rotary International Headquarters.

Last week we heard from Dave Burt, our guest speaker, who spoke with passion on his personal journey through depression that led to him writing the book ‘Lengthening the Shadows’.  It was a sobering but important discussion and I know that Dave is a significant advocate for the support of mental health issues that exist in the construction sector.  His donation of 3 copies of his book was appreciated and thanks to those who have purchased these copies.  I know that you will enjoy the read.

This Tuesday night’s the speaker is Wakatipu High School student Jack McBeth, who is the recipient of Rotary Club of Queenstown support to his participating on the ‘Spirit of Adventure’.  He will speak on his experience on the ship.

Thanks to Russell and Lee-Ann who will look after the meeting in my absence.

Take care
Ross

QUEENSTOWN ROTARY TERTIARY SCHOLARSHIP

On Friday 1 November, President Ross attended the WHS Senior Prizegiving assembly and presented The Rotary Tertiary Scholarship for Diligence and Commitment at Year 13.  This year it was awarded to Gareth Harcombe.

Gareth has shown unwavering commitment to the pursuit of academic excellence over his time at Wakatipu High School.  It is not uncommon to see Gareth using his break times to attend tutorials or independent study; and this diligence and hard work has paid huge dividends.  Today this student has received Distinction Awards for Level 3 Biology, Digital Technology, English and Physics and a Commendation Award for Level 3 Chemistry.  He was the top Y10 scholar in 2016 and the top Y11 scholar in 2017.  Last year he was a joint recipient of the award for top Y12 scholar.  For his diligence and commitment to study not just this year but over the last five years, Gareth Harcombe was awarded the Rotary Club of Queenstown Tertiary Scholarship.

MELBOURNE CUP NIGHT

It was a fun afternoon.  Gabrielle took out the main sweepstake prize of an expensive bottle of Saki ($160 donated by David Carter).
Spot prizes (donated by Lee-Ann) were won by David Tait for Best dressed male and Jill from Inner wheel for female best dressed. Derek Bulman and Margaret Robins won a spot prize.

LAURA DOUGLAS - REAL COUNTRY
Apologies for the incorrect photo of Laura being published in the last Bulletin.

22 October’s speaker was Laura Douglas who, in 2016, swapped her stilettos and corporate suits in the corporate city world for gumboots and a stockwhip. Born and raised on a sheep farm in Mossburn,  her parents encouraged her to venture outside Southland and farming, and she did just that.

After completing a science degree at Otago University then aspiring to be a physiotherapist, and working in a bar, Laura was advised that she was wasted on hospitality and that she should do an MBA (Master of Business Administration degree).  At age 23 she became one of the youngest people to graduate from Otago University with an MBA.

She worked in corporate finance and secured her place in the highly competitive Wellington business world.  Her life took her to live in Ireland, South Africa, Hawke’s Bay and Auckland where she worked in advertising, real estate, property management and later in the software industry.  But it was after she transferred from Auckland to Christchurch to manage a team of data scientists that developed cyber analytical tools, and while daydreaming and doodling one day, that she realised her city life, for all of its charm and financial security, could not give her the picture she had just sketched of ‘Laura’s Life in 5 years’.

The sketch saw her standing on the deck of a house she owned, a glass of whisky in her hand, a dog at her feet, and looking out to the horse in her paddock, her ute and jet boat in the driveway, and the mountains all around her. On this day, the seed of her business idea and a life of her dreams, was planted.

Laura’s idea was to show people the fun things of a rural life and she wanted to get women, in particular, outside their comfort zone by teaching them to do things like backing a trailer, shooting a gun, archery and whip cracking.  She quit her job, moved to Queenstown and started refining her business plan while learning how to do things like GST, marketing and making a website.  She located the perfect spot on a farm in Kingston.

As soon as the website went up she received an inquiry despite not being ready to any start tours.  Late that night saw her at the Warehouse purchasing a chilly-bin, a thermos and coffee cups and was up until midnight making scones and a bacon and egg pie.  The trip went off brilliantly and she realised that it wasn’t so much about the activities themselves but the overall experience of people interacting with a ‘real local’. Laura’s presentation was about this background and her story since that time of ‘daydreaming and doodling’ and establishing her business 'Real Conntry'.
