Our Rotary Club continues to skip along with a lot of exciting things happening, including another 2 inductions.  It is fantastic to welcome Rebecca Lund and Scott Donaldson to our Club.  They will both bring fresh ideas and progressive energy.  Rebecca is a teacher at Wakatipu High School and Scott is a Senior Lawyer at AWS in Queenstown.

Our other 3 new members, Fiona and Tim Wilshire and Hamish Murray, have already been put to work with various jobs or roles.  The new members are all enthusiastic to get stuck in and to help grow the Club.  Be sure to get to know these new members and make them feel welcome.  They will have something to offer you and with all your local Queenstown and Rotary knowledge and experience, you will most definitely have something to offer them.  On November 17th we have a “meet the new members” night” ... perhaps we might have a few more by then.

The Lakeland Park camp Boulder Wall Project official opening was yesterday (Saturday 17th) with a handful of Rotarians there to celebrate this successful Rotary Community Project and acknowledge the hard mahi of those involved.  Camp managers Ross and Lynette and 2 camp trustees put on a BBQ lunch.  These types of smaller projects are really meaningful, and they are manageable to complete.  Riki and Jason have both said that this is a big part of why they joined Rotary and are keen to do more projects like this in the community.  This is what it is all about, while being seen doing good in our hood.  After all, Rotarians are People of Action, aren’t we?

Last weekend, our club hosted the RLI Facilitators training course and catered for 19 Rotarians which raised $822 and which the Board have agreed to put towards our Shelter Box goal.  A big thanks to new member Fiona for your time and delicious home-made culinary efforts.  Fiona is amongst many things, a Qualified Chef, so she was perfect for the job.

Foundation Dinners are mainly over for another year.  The last one will be held tomorrow night.  I hope that you have all enjoyed some excellent meals and fellowship.  If you still need to pay the new bank details are below.

The new bank account with the ANZ - 01-0867-0722903 00
(Please remember to update if you have saved it to your bank list of payees)

November is a busy month with the Cardrona Distillery Tour and dinner at the Cardrona Pub on the 3rd November.  Dinner is with the Wanaka Rotary Club and is a set menu at $35pp.  It looks pretty good and it should be a fun night and a great chance to catch up with a few of our fellow Wanaka Club buddies.

You can choose to pay $25 per person or per couple for the tour.  The Distillery have very generously offered it for free if we put the money towards one of our charities, which again, Shelter Box will be the recipient.  This should bring us real close to the amount required of $1500 to buy a full Shelter Box.  This is a great effort by you all, thank you.

November 5th is The Polio+ Movie night, “I Am Woman” at the Reading Theatre.  Please be there before 5.30pm.  Remember to invite your friends and family.  The tickets will be pre-sold, however, there will be door sales if there are spare tickets.  Afterwards, everyone is welcome to head next door to Winnies for supper at $20pp or you can choose from the menu.

During the school holidays, 2 lucky WHS students, Yasmin Kidd and Jack Smillie, went on the Bluelight Whitbread, Steinlager 2 Yacht, leadership course in Auckland.  We have 2 more going in December.  Below is a summary of their report they emailed us with some pictures.  It sounds like they had an awesome time.  I am trying to get them to visit us but they are busy with NCEA exams at the moment, so it may be nearer to Christmas.

This week, John Parson gave an eye-opening talk that left most of us a little shell-shocked.  The ease in which we all can be a victim of cyber-crime, even if we are careful, is real and it is especially frightening when children are targeted.  John has put out a book, which Ralph Hannan happened to be lucky to win a free copy.

The links below are for all members and your families.  The videos address the issues of risk and give practical advice to parents and grandparents.  Please use as you wish.

Reminder:  Have you asked someone this week if they want to join Rotary?  You are the best advocate, so don’t keep our great Club and all the good work we do a secret.  Ask someone today.

JOHN PARSONS - 'CYBER SAFETY'
Last Tuesday (13 October) John spoke to us about Cyber Safety including with children.  He is a leading authority in this field.  He is a cyber safety and risk assessment consultant and works all over NZ with young people and their parents showing them how they can stay safe in the ‘on-line’ world.  He also works as a consultant to the relevant authorities and individually with families to help them when things go wrong.  He has written a book “Keeping Your Children Safe On-Line: A Guide for NZ Parents”.

John spoke of the importance of raising children in an environment of love, including eye contact when interacting with them.  He emphasised providing children with engaging activities and not leaving them with unsupervised access to the internet where children ‘normalise’ what they see.  Parents need to positively influence children’s thinking concerning what they see on TV and the internet.

John also related how easily we can be scammed and details, including our bank accounts, secured.  People can be particularly vulnerable in times of need.  He also helps them post adverse ‘on line’ events.

POLIO+ MOVIE NIGHT FUNDRAISER

Dubbed “The Queen of Housewife Rock,” 1970s Australian songstress Helen Reddy’s 1971 song “I Am Woman” was the unofficial anthem of the women’s rights movement then and now, for International Women’s Day.  The song gives voice to female empowerment with the unforgettable refrain, “I am woman, hear me roar.”

The Movie event will be held at the Reading Theatre, at 6pm on November 5th.  Please try to arrive by 5.15-5.30pm.  You must be seated by 5.50pm.  The cinema bar and cafe will be open.  Afterwards, we will go for Pizza and beer or wine at Winnies, next door.  More info and a price per head will follow.

Remember to invite family and friends and make a night of it.  JUST $25 PER PERSON.  For bookings and enquiries, contact -

BLUELIGHT WHITBREAD, STEINLAGER 2 COURSE
BLUELIGHT WHITBREAD, STEINLAGER 2 COURSE
BY JACK SMILLIE

On the first week of the school holidays, we had the opportunity to travel on Steinlager 2 via a scholarship from Queenstown Rotary Club and BlueLight Trust.  Steinlager 2 is an incredible sailing boat skippered by Sir Peter Blake, which won the 1989/1990 Whitbread Round the World Yacht Race; winning all 6 legs of the race and set the fastest time sailing around the world.

For 5 days we sailed around the Hauraki Gulf learning new skills, getting to know new people and of course, making memories.  On the journey, we met some awesome people from all over the North Island (we were the only South Islanders) and experienced some crazy things together.  A couple of highlights were the early morning ocean swims (7:00am) which were surprisingly cold for us Southerners, and our evening chill time when we got to chat with our crewmates.  We were also extremely lucky to visit various islands in the gulf and see some wildlife including dolphins, albatross and even some peacocks at Mansion Bay, Kawau Island.

Each day we took turns working the boat, skippering, working the sails, navigating as well as other daily chores such as cooking and cleaning.  This was a challenging time for all of us as we did not comprehend the discipline involved with maintaining such a large vessel.  We also learned about Sir Peter Blake and his significance to NZ sailing as well as his massive contribution towards environmental awareness and climate change.  This was certainly a highlight of 2020 for both of us and we are truly grateful to have gone on this experience.

We would like to say a huge thanks to Rotary Queenstown for this fantastic opportunity.  We wish luck to Will and Jonty as they embark on the next Steinlager 2 expedition in the January school holidays.
