A pleasure opening up the Mountain Scene this week to see fellow Rotarian Kerry and wife Kit securing a flight and MIQ out of New South Wales.  It appears to have been quiet an ordeal they have had to go through over the last several weeks.  We will be keen see them again at Rotary soon and to hear all about their journeys.

Speaking of journeys, and as mentioned to a few previously, Jodie, Teghan and I bid farewell to our son Liam recently.  He has made it safely into Munich and is now basing himself in Regensburg for a couple of months before exploring Europe over the next year.  We have been in touch and all is going well!

Last Tuesday night we were treated to a spectacular presentation by Rotarian and Queenstown President-Elect Grant Rees on rafting through the Grand Canyon - some great images and video footage of going down through the rapids and "sucking rubber".  I really hope we can return to some sort of normality in the future with regards to the travel, photos and stories that I have seen and heard since joining Rotary.  These have me itching to visit for myself.

Next Tuesday is our off site meeting at FOGO Restaurant.  If you haven't booked already please do so.  I look forward to seeing everyone there.

Yours in Rotary
President Jason

GUEST SPEAKER - GRANT REES
As Jason has mentioned in his blog, last week’s speaker was our own Grant Rees.  Grant was a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar to Denver many years ago where he spent a year at university there training for his chosen career.  He then returned annually for recertification.

Whilst back there, Grant and his wife rafted the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon several times, a week long journey camping on the sides of the river.

THE WILDING PINES ISSUE - RICHARD BOWMAN

On 13 July our own Richard Bowman presented a very informative account of the Wilding Pines issue in the Wakatipu and beyond.  Richard began his career as a Geologist serving time in mines in South Africa. Returning later to N.Z he later became involved in Biosecurity in posts with the Invercargill City Council and Environment Southland.  This is where his interest in the wilding pine issue became a key interest and role.

Pinus Contorta, Douglas Fir and Corsican Pine are the most problematic in terms of growth and spread but so too are uncontrolled Pinus Radiata, Scots Pine and Larch. Richard showed photos of Mid Dome (south of Athol) comparing the landscape back in 1998 with the proliferation of wilding pines in 2015.  The impact on land is reduced grazing for animals (reduced stock) which in turn affects the economics of farming animals.  Wilding pines also suck water out of the ground thus affecting our waterways.  He also highlighted the improvements achieved in Sawpit Gully behind Arrowtown with photographs.

The negative effect of wilding pines on the N.Z. economy, over the next 50 years, Richard  estimated at $6.3 billion.  The Wakatipu Wilding Conifer Group spent some $6m, from funding made available, eradicating the pest locally in the last year.

Richard's dream is that the Wakatipu will, in future, comprise tussock grass country devoid of wild tree afforestation.  He challenged Queenstown Rotary, as a project, to adopt a 1 hectare plot on Bob’s Peak and to eradicate growing wilding pines therein.

Apologies - Must be received to queenstownrotary@gmail.com before 12pm Tuesday at the latest.  You will be invoiced for your meal if no apology is received.  Please advise if you if you want to go on a permanent apology and then just let us know when you do want to attend.  It is easier to inform the restaurant of an extra meal than the Club or you, having to pay for meals not claimed.

The 3 Minute Talk - to make sure we run to time, please keep to between 3-5 minutes, unless pre-arranged with President Jason.

Apologies - Must be received to queenstownrotary@gmail.com before 12pm Tuesday at the latest.  Please be aware that you will be invoiced for your meal if no apology is received.  If you are unsure if you can make it each week, you can put in a permanent apology and let us know when you do come.  It is easier to inform the restaurant of an extra meal than the Club having to pay for meals not claimed.

Anybody who would like to donate an artwork to be sold can drop it off to Andie King at the Queenstown Art Society in Ballarat Street from August 7th.

I'm sure many of our members would be interested in supporting this long-established local good cause either by buying a ticket or donating something, and it is another way in which we can support the High School.
