GUEST SPEAKER - KIWI HARVEST

Lucy and Kayley joined us at Rotary this week.  Kiwi Harvest works in Queenstown in partnership with Sustainable Queenstown.  Of note, Queenstown Rotary helped Sustainable Queenstown establish 'Kiwi Harvest' 2 years ago using the $14, 000 proceeds from our annual Duck Race.  It was of real interest, and satisfying, to learn more about their operation and progress made.

Kiwi Harvest is a national fresh food rescue charity operating in Queenstown and in 4 other centres (so far).  They will shortly be expanding into Wanaka, Cromwell and Alexandra to broaden their work locally.

Their purpose is to:
  • Rescue good food from going to landfill
  • Safely distribute this edible food to NZ charities serving people in need.
Locally they rescue ‘best before’ date food, destined for landfill disposal, set aside by local supermarkets and a food distributor and distribute it to local organisations working with people in need including the Salvation Army, Happiness House, Wakatipu Youth Trust, the Queenstown Play Centre and ‘Let’s Eat.’

GUEST SPEAKERS - TOASTMASTERS INTERNATIONAL
Toastmasters was founded in 1924 and now has some 16,000 clubs in 42 countries.

Last week’s guest speakers were Scott Donaldson and John Quinn from the Queenstown club.  Scott, currently Club President, spoke of his personal experience that led him to join Toastmasters.  He outlined the structure of their meetings including speeches (both prepared and impromptu) and evaluations provided by fellow Toastmasters in, of note, a helpful and supportive environment.

John’s profession is that of a ‘Presentologist’ whose business ‘Audience Alive’ focuses on interactive presentations including Powerpoint presentation design and audience engagement.
He outlined the 4 key components to speeches – i.e. PREP (Point, Reason, Example, Point) then provided topics for ‘Powerpoint Karaoke’ - impromptu speeches taken up by Rotarians in the audience.

We hope to establish a closer working relationship with Queenstown Toastmasters with interested Rotarians benefiting from the Toastmaster’s experience.

Below Scott opening the presentation and far below Riki Hunter tackling an impromptu topic - 'teamwork'.

5 MINUTE TALK FROM PP ROSS BEAL
On 8 September our (immediate) Past President provided a 5 minute talk about the COVID experience in Uganda and the NZ contribution made by their charity ‘Fountain of Peace’ in supporting some 400 needy families with basic needs including beans, flour and soap.  This Fountain of Peace initiative was the first of its type into a school community in Uganda.  Their organisation was recognised and thanked for their initiative by the local community leadership.
