Last week we held our Club Committee meetings on a Rotary night, instead of a guest speaker. There was good discussion within each team and feedback received is that it is a concept worth pursuing. We will hold another committee evening in the not too distant future.

The Club Plan for the year has now been agreed by the Board. This along with the Club Directory and Phone list will be out to you very soon. We wish to add vocations to the Phone List and you will be approached for your details by Jan. The NRG members value knowing the vocations of club members for potential mentorship of newer Rotarians. Members who are retired will be asked to provide their previous work vocations.

It was good to have our Assistant District Governor, Paul Checketts from Alexandra club, attend our meeting this week and so early in the Rotary year. This Sunday he will chair the first of the Central Lakes Presidents’ meetings at Cromwell that Richard Muth (NRG) and I will be attending.

Club Runner website training will also be happening in Cromwell on Sunday which 4 of our members will be attending. Once we are fully familiar with all of Club Runner’s workings and advantages, we will show these off at a club night.

Regards
President Keith

  Committee Meetings 19th July

With so many members away on holiday, the meeting was small but very productive. The Committee meetings achieved excellent results which will lead us into a smoothly-run year. It is hoped that we will have more committee meetings like this.

Ed Halson - Guest Speaker 2 August       Ed is the Chairman of Land Search and Rescue - LandSAR- He asked us to close our eyes whilst he described a situation of a child lost in the bush. When we had visualised that, he described the work that went into a rescue. LandSAR is overseen by the Police, but all LandSAR people work on a voluntary basis. They will drop everything at a moment's notice to search for lost people There are 78 LandSAR volunteers in Queenstown. They are not well funded and visitors don't have to contribute to a search.

There are several Rules of 3 to remember if you are lost:

Remember to tell someone where you are going, when you expect to return and when to send up the balloon.  You have 3 seconds to get the right attitude and 3 minutes to get air.

  • You can survive for 3 Minutes without air (oxygen) or in icy water
  • You can survive for 3 Hours without shelter in a harsh environment (unless in icy water)
  • You can survive for 3 Days without water (if sheltered from a harsh environment)
  • You can survive for 3 Weeks without food (if you have water and shelter).                                        Ed's talk was very informative and we appreciate him taking the time to come and speak to us.

BOARD BITS

The Board welcomed new member, Russell McGrouther, Chair of Club Administration. He has already got a handle on the running of the club and has introduced a couple of new things:

When you come in to dinner, you will see that the attendance list has been updated, so please check your new number (You might miss out on the raffle if you don't) .

The Duties have changed slightly. If you are on Welcome and Introduce Speaker, you are in charge of looking after the speaker when he/she arrives. When Alan sends you a reminder he will  also send a description of your duty.

The Board is looking at getting a portable EFTPOS machine for collections. Most people don't carry cash around these days and we are missing out on potential funds. Richard Muth believes we can get one for a minimal cost.

Several Board members are going to ClubRunner training this weekend in Cromwell.

             3 MINUTE TALK 19 JULY
Colin Macnicol visited friends in the US who owned 15 guns, one of which was a pistol which the wife carried in her handbag. Colin was invited to go out for target practice (Jean declined) so he went out with the pistol. He was given some comprehensive safety training and fired off about 400 rounds. One of them hit the target -or at least I think that is what he said image
