Hi Team,
Welcome to this week’s Bulletin.

We note that March 2025 is slightly different from March 2019.
I mentioned on Tuesday evening that it was 5 years to the day since New Zealand was placed in Covid Lockdown.
The excerpt below is from the Bulletin circulated on the 29th March 2019.

I trust that you are all doing OK in your new found incarceration.  The good news is that it is only day 3 of home detention and we have been advised that we still have a number of weeks to perfect the art. It was good to chat briefly with everybody last week and those conversations left me satisfied that everybody was in good heart and in good spirits.
To be fair I enjoyed the ringing around as it got me out of folding towels, vacuuming and doing other inane indoor chores at the behest of Rosanna.
Lee-Ann and Hamish were clearly in good spirits (refer her Facebook page).  If you keep up that pace, you will run out of wine.
Stuart Maclean was already bored, however he had pre-empted lock down by starting early on return from his enjoyable weekend in Australia at the Melbourne Grand Prix.
Hanna was fed up with Steve McLean because she claimed that Steve was cheating at cards.
Jean Macnicol was enjoying a little bit of peace as Colin had gone bush with his gun to do some shooting, although I don’t why as the Supermarkets are still open.
Bruce Boivin missed my first call as his newly implemented exercise regime is based on leaving his phone at the other end of the house so that he can exhaust himself sprinting to the phone when it rings.
Ralph and Betty are helping ‘Donald’ out while stranded in Washington DC but doing OK.
Ron Mackersy is terrorising Tarras apparently with a chain saw, and he has also constructed a putting green outside his front door, a simple Par 13 apparently.
When I explained to Brian Macpherson that I was phoning with a pastoral care call, he thought he was receiving a call from his Minister.
Ken Fox, a little like Stuart, was in day 9 of his post international travel isolation.
Chris Taylor was suffering from the early symptoms of golf withdrawal.
Tony Robins had supplemented his panic buying with gin and chocolates.
My brief chat with Mayor Jim Boult confirmed that he is extremely busy but coping with the pressures of this event on our community.

Great night last Tuesday with a large turnout including 3 guests from Australia.
We had the pleasure of a humorous presentation from PHF Philip “Scoop” Chandler, it was good to host Scoop and Tracey Roxburgh for the evening.
Scoop regaled us with stories from his 40 years in Queenstown with the Mountain Scene.

We formally welcomed MJ Kooger into the Queenstown Rotary Club.  MJ has been attending for a few weeks and has also been a willing volunteer at various events.
MJ has been a Rotarian in Auckland so we are pleased that she has joined with us.  Welcome MJ, the invoice is on the way !!!.

Julie Forde, provided 2 Bottles of Wine for auction, and these were purchased for $100.00 for the benefit of the Rotary Foundation.
Thank you Julie for your generosity, and also thank you to Simon for your successful bid, don’t drink it all at once.

Look forward to seeing you all at Rotary on Tuesday, noting that we cant use Lockdown as an excuse !!

Cheers
Ross

MONICA MULHOLLAND - OFF THE GRID (SHELTER BOX) (25TH OF MARCH)

Shelterbox is an International Disaster Relief Charity providing emergency shelter and essential aid. Over a twenty-five year period, Shelter Box has provided aid to over 2.5 million people in 100 countries providing emergency shelter based on the specific needs of each disaster.

From the beginning, Rotary International has supported this vital organisation.

Off the Grid 2025 Challenge, 2025

OffTheGrid challenges Kiwi's to camp out and switch off all electricity for twenty-four hours to understand what it is like for people after a disaster or to be a refugee escaping conflict.

The campaign, in turn, raises money to help fund ShelterBox projects around the world.

The money you raise by taking the OffTheGrid challenge will make a real difference for families recovering from a disaster or conflict. Tents, ShelterKits, cooking equipment, solar lights, hammers, rope and water purification units are just some of the things you can help provide to families who need it most.

The club has the opportunity to join forces with the Inner Wheel Queenstown Club to support this cause. The evening would be held at the Christian Camp (Kelvin Heights) from 4pm until 9pm. Bring a plate to share and there will be games setup on tables. Dinner will be served at around 6.30-7pm. If you are interested, please let Monica Mulholland know as soon as possible.

How can we get involved as a club?

We encourage all Rotary Club members to participate in the Off the Grid 2025 challenge, lead by example, and promote it within their networks.

There are many ways to get involved with Shelterbox.

  • Local Shelterbox Chapter: Check if there's a Shelterbox chapter in your area. They might need volunteers for fundraising events, packing boxes, or spreading awareness.
  • Skills-Based Volunteering: Offer your skills to Shelterbox. This could include marketing, fundraising, event planning, grant writing, or technical skills.
  • International Volunteering: Shelterbox sometimes has opportunities for volunteers to travel to disaster zones and assist with aid distribution.
Donating:

  • Financial Donations: You can make a one-time or recurring donation directly to Shelterbox through their website.
  • In-Kind Donations: Shelterbox accepts specific items, like tents, blankets, or water filtration systems. Check their website for their current needs.
  • Fundraising Events: Organize a fundraising event like a bake sale, concert, or walk/run to raise money for Shelterbox.

Other Ways to Support:

  • Spread Awareness: Share information about Shelterbox on social media, talk to friends and family, and encourage others to donate or volunteer.
  • Advocate for Shelterbox: Contact your local government representatives and advocate for increased funding for disaster relief organisations like Shelterbox.

To find the best way to get involved, visit the Shelterbox website https://www.shelterbox.org/

GUEST SPEAKER - PHILLIP CHADLER (SCOOP) MOUNTAIN SCENE 25TH OF MARCH

On the 25th of March, we had a local icon, Phillip (Scoop) Chandler present to the club. Phillip spoke about his early days in the industry, experiences with various editors and publishers, and his personal life here in Queenstown.

Phillip has worked for the Mountain Scene for 40-years, experiencing various ups and downs, including the financial crash in the 1980's.  He acknowledges the importance of supporting local businesses and initiatives.

In his spare time many years ago, he ran two half-marathons here in Queenstown with the assistance of a trainer.

Scoop highlighted the value that the Rotary Club of Queenstown do and praised the members and their contributions to the local community. Last year, he received a Paul Harris Fellow by the club for his service to the community.

Overall, the evening was a humorous and insightful reflection on Phillip's life and career, highlighting his love for Queenstown, his dedication to journalism, and his appreciation for the community he lives in.
