Russell's Ramblings

Isn’t it great that we are busy within the community promoting Rotary?  Last weekend, with Kerry Dunlop and his team’s enthusiasm, we officially opened the Rotary Tucker Beach Trail.  This is being recognised as Queenstown Rotary’s Gift to the Community to acknowledge our 75 Years of being part of the local community.  There was a great attendance of young and older to witness the opening of the track and, when the main proceedings were completed, the littlies took off with great gusto, followed by adults on bikes and then the walkers.  This was a great time to showcase Rotary and those present were certainly made aware of Rotary’s major involvement in both the new track and the restoration of the old Shotover Bridge from rack and ruin to its glory and usefulness as we see it today.  The bridge was acknowledged as the Community Project to celebrate Rotary International’s Centennial Year and Queenstown Rotary was  awarded one of twenty International Citations / Awards for that project.  Even though most of the current project was completed by a very small enthusiastic team, it was a day when those many Rotary Members and their spouses who were in attendance could say that they are proud to be Rotarians and especially as members of Queenstown Rotary.  We still have some planting and general maintenance work to be completed so this will be a good chance for us all to assist and support Kerry and his team with what they have managed to achieve so far.

A reminder that there is NO MEETING AT WILD THYME THIS WEEK OR NEXT WEEK.

On Wednesday Night, 31st October, we have the premier of the BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY at Reading Cinema in the Mall and for those who wish to stay on afterwards Pizzas have been arranged at Searle Lane.  We still have some seats available so bring a friend so that we can make a greater contribution towards Polio Plus Programme.

Next week we shall meet at Stacks Pub at the Hilton and take in the fun and the fair of the Melbourne Cup.  At this stage we don’t have the numbers to make this a Queenstown Rotary event, so we will just join in with the other patrons there and enjoy the atmosphere.

On Thursday 1st November, along with our Youth Chair Lee-Ann Lines, I will be representing the club at the Wakatipu High School Senior Prizegiving and, with youth in mind, our nominee Archie Kerr has been accepted to attend next year’s Rotary Science Forum.  I’m sure that we will hear from him early in the new year.

Saturday 10th November is the District’s Car Fun Day at The Highlands Motor Park at Cromwell and on 16th and 17th we are hosting the International Marathon Fellowship of Rotarians Group who will be competing in the Queenstown Marathon.  (See below for more details)

Also please note in your diaries that we shall be celebrating Christmas on a chartered Million Dollar Cruise on WEDNESDAY 12TH DECEMBER.  There will of course be no meeting on Tuesday 11th December and this will be our final meeting for 2018.

When discussing how fast the end of the year was approaching with Ashley Adams a short time ago, his response was “It’s just like a roll of toilet paper the closer you get to the end of it the faster it goes.”

Have a great time and I’ll give you another few words of wisdom in a couple of weeks’ time.

DISTRICT9980 CAR RALLY AND (FUN) TRACK DAY

HIGHLANDS MOTORSPORTS PARK
CORNER SH6 AND SANDFLAT ROAD, CROMWELL
10th November 2018 starting at 12.30 pm
in the Pit Area of Highlands
Calling All 9980 Clubs.

Fill up as many cars as you can with your club members, family and friends.  Car rally to Cromwell in the morning, plenty of routes to get you there so plan some fun stops on the way.  BBQ lunch starts at 12.30pm (courtesy of Cromwell Rotary), take your car on and around the Highlands circuit starting from 1 pm, and enjoy some great fellowship and meet some Great Rotarian's and their guests.  $10 per person for lunch and $20 entry fee per car with all proceeds after expenses to go to Rotary Projects.  Then maybe try a wine tasting or two once done at the many vineyards in the area or just enjoy Sunny Central to your hearts content.  Highlands have lots to do and see, so maybe a friendly grudge match on the go-karts or a blast around the track in a Ferrari.  The Hamilton Cup is up for grabs for the best turned out AG's area so get your thinking caps on and race gear organised.
DG Andrew says:
This year the District is holding a "Fun Day". Because our Rotary District covers a large area, we don't all get together very often.  This is a social day, an opportunity to catch up with old friends and make some new friends from members of other Rotary Clubs.  The more we all get to know each other, the more contacts we each have amongst our Rotary Clubs and the more we can all achieve both locally and globally, and of course the more fun we can have on the way!  The Assistant Governors have made a wonderful job of organising the day.  Please feel free to bring family and friends.  Barbara and I look forward to seeing everyone in Cromwell - and maybe on the racetrack!!

RECENT SPEAKERS
On 16th November our Speaker did not turn up.  As is so often the case Chris Taylor stepped in and regaled us with his life story.  Growing up in Dunedin and following the family business into the skin industry.  A great story of the rise, change and fall of demand and supply of rabbit and possum skins through time.  Finally a short family run through of his three sons & families by a very proud father.  Well done, thank you Chris.

Last week we had Local Poet and Author Dale Stephens.  He gave us a great and really informative 20 minutes of poetry relating to the history of the Dart River Area and in particular the life of the late Rosy Grant.  The members present were enraptured by the research he had undertaken and of his poetic skills.

THE CHAPPELL'S

Last week’s meeting was the last that Past District Governor Martin and Past President Jan will be attending. They have sold up in Arrowtown and are preparing to shift to Oxford in Canterbury where they have their daughter and grandchildren living. Martin’s will be closer to a Base Hospital due to his medical events in recent times.  Whilst we are sad to see them leave our area and more importantly our club we wish both of them good health and happiness in what will be their new surroundings and community and where they will develop new friendships.

SUSTAINABLE QUEENSTOWN CHARITABLE TRUST
A Message from Esther at Sustainable Queenstown Charitable Trust.

We thank you again for Rotary's kind participation and contribution through the Duck Race earlier in the year.  We have already started the Kiwi Harvest Food Surplus Redistribution.  We pick up about 150 kg's of food per day from our local supermarkets, this is fresh produce near to its best before date.  We then give this nourishing food to Happiness House, Salvation Army, Wakatipu Youth Trust, Basket of Blessings and Queenstown Playcentre.  The recipient agents are thrilled that people in need can access this food, and we are equally thrilled that we are preventing good food going to landfill.

If you will be away, or for some other reason you cannot do your duty on the nominated day, it is your responsibility as soon as possible, and certainly no later than the Monday night before the meeting, to arrange a substitute.  A swap with the person who has the duty the next week is suggested.
Please be there by 5.25 pm if you are on Reception or Meet & Greet.
