Tuesday May 29th Club Meeting

Our speakers this evening tackled two very important issues - President’s Guest Olivia Wensley spoke about sexual harassment in the workplace, and Kate Wilkinson and Anna Kirkwood addressed the benefits of diversity in the workplace.

Olivia has become almost a household name following her speaking out publicly about her experiences of sexual harassment.  This unsavoury practice which is indulged in by a few men in powerful positions has been swept under the carpet for far too long by men who do not suffer from it, therefore think it doesn’t happen, and women fearful of reprisals if they take action against the perpetrators.  This kind of abuse has had untold consequences for many women and has taken far too long to be brought into the limelight.  Now that Olivia has helped highlight the situation in (some) New Zealand law firms, hopefully the perpetrators and facilitators of this behaviour will realise that it has got to stop.

Our Guest Speakers were Kate Wilkinson and Anna Kirkwood.  Kate is a lawyer and Anna is a social worker and they have formed a Social Enterprise called The Awareness Project.  The Awareness Project specialises in helping employers develop workplace diversity, and Kate and Anna have the ultimate goal of creating a community where discriminations such as racism, sexism, homophobia, ageism and ableism no longer exist.  Anna and Kate described how they work with New Zealand businesses and showed us some of the tools and exercises they use to help employers recognise prejudices and embrace differences in their employees and create workplaces where everyone is accepted no matter what.  Not only does this create a more kind and tolerant environment, but it is a well-documented fact that diverse groups of people make better quality decisions.
PRESIDENT NOMINEE ADDRESS AT CLUB ASSEMBLY

GENERAL COMMENTS FROM CLUB ASSEMBLY
VENUE
Whilst there is a problem with kitchen and adjoining bar/dining area noise, members were appreciative of how Wild Thyme have looked after us. In particular their not charging for non-attenders.  It was certainly suggested that we should be looking at moving to the Five Mile Area at Frankton but there is nothing completely suitable for us in that area of town at this time.  In Steve McLean’s year as President we shifted from venue to venue which was disruptive to the club.  So if we are to make a move to another venue, we have to be sure that this will only be a ONE MOVE to another location.  It was generally felt that we are not in a position to make that change at this time.

MEETING WEEKLY was well preferred to fortnightly or otherwise.

TIMING  6.00pm was the preferred time.

MEAL
It was generally accepted that the meal that is currently provided is sufficient and is appropriate to the amount charged.

SPEAKERS
Everyone was really happy with the speakers that had presented during the year.

PRESIDENT’S GUEST
The idea of having a President’s Guest was developed this year but it was noted that some have over shadowed the Guest Speaker for the evening.

HAPPY FINES
The general consensus of opinion was that we should revert to a Sergeant’s fine but allow additional Happy Fines.

TOAST TO A ROTARY PROJECT AND PARTING THOUGHT
Both came up with a Yes.

PERSONAL AND GENERAL COMMUNITY PROJECTS
This certainly raised comment. It was generally felt that we had not been out and about in the community as we had been in the past and that we had lost a couple of activities but the members are keen to be seen out and about and presenting Rotary within the overall community.

BIANCA CRICHTON
Recently we heard from a very excited Bianca Crichton who we assisted and sponsored to attend the Rotary National Science School in Auckland this year.  She, consistent with previous attendees that we had previously heard from, spoke of the wonderful experience and the extra knowledge she gained from attending this event.  The Science School opens the minds of the participants to explore the different aspect of the sciences. In Bianca’s case, she returned home with a completely different view of the sciences and the direction of her future university studies.  It was great to hear from one of our Wakatipu High School students who, like those before her, have benefited from our sponsorship to this annual event.

Members may remember 2017 when Wakatipu students Connor Kennedy and Olivia Rae were the two students at the National Science School selected to receive scholarships to attend the London International Youth Science Forum for that year.  This was a great achievement for them together with the great pride of our club that nominated and sponsored them to this annual event.

We are extremely fortunate to have such students recommended to us from the Science Department of Wakatipu High School and we are happy to continue our relationship in this area.

AD EATERS - SEPTEMBER 2018

The Night of the AdEaters - September 15th and 16th 2018
Memorial Centre Queenstown

The AdEaters team is now in the final stages of negotiating a long term contract option for the event in New Zealand, as well as organising our marketing/PR strategy and event launch.

The event launch will be held soon after the end of WinterFest in late June and will mark the opening of ticket sales on Eventfinda - we need to sell 800+ tickets which will be priced at around $55 each.

Apart from putting the dates in your diary - we will need many hands on deck on September 14th/15th/16th - members can help by putting sponsorship suggestions to the committee (Keith, Russell or Joan).  We are more than half-way to our target, but we still need more sponsors.
