Good weather puts everyone in a good mood and we have been basking in a recent good run.  Ferg is giving burgers away and we keep dodging the COVID-19 bullet, no matter how stupid some people are.  But in a way, COVID-19 is having a laugh on the misfortune of our town with the closure of several businesses recently.  These operators just can’t see a way forward and it’s really sad.  It’s been made clear that not much support or sympathy can be expected either.  So, we just need to keep ‘supporting local’ when we can, and our Rotary Club is doing its bit to support local business with our fun and interesting monthly off-site meetings.  Thank you all for that.

Coming up next Tuesday was going to be 4 wheel-driving, heading out cross-country on the Closeburn Station with a BBQ to follow.  Due to COVID-19 Alert moving back to Level 2, we have had to postpone this event. We hope to reschedule it shortly. We will now meet at the Crown Pub & Beer Garden behind the 5 Mile complex -  next to Macaulay Motors. You will have had an email from Chris Taylor today about this.

We recently had WHS students Hannah Battrick and Linus Ritchie present to us on their Summer Science & Technology Forum experiences in Auckland in January.  These students always come back from this amazing opportunity with a clearer vision on their University and career pathway.  Hannah told us she is keen to pursue a career in Bioengineering and Linus a Mechatronics Engineering (you might want to Google that one! or see below).  Click on this link to find out more about this Rotary Project which is in conjunction with the AUT - https://rotarysciencetechforum.wordpress.com/about/event-details/

Due to a household illness, other recent Rotary scholarship recipients, Will Kidd and Jonty Vaivars, are now rescheduled to present to us later in March.  These two students did the Whitbread, Steinlager 2 leadership course just before Christmas.  Another student, Cameron Scobie who won the coveted J.R. McKenzie Outward Bound Scholarship couldn't make it in person either, but he has provided a video presentation.  You can watch it here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xqFnE6Q_riU

We are about to embark on our busy March programme.  We have quite a bit coming up so I just want to say in advance a big thank you to the members who will be getting up early or turning sausages.

BUNNINGS STORE OPENING FUNDRAISER - THE NEW DATES ARE:
  1. A Tradies Event - TUESDAY 30 MARCH 3pm - 7pm
  2. A ‘Soft Opening’ & Special Guests Event - THURSDAY 1 APRIL
    2 Events:

  4. Grand Opening Continuation Weekend - SATURDAY & SUNDAY 10-11th APRIL, 8.30 - 4pm
Not part of the opening but as an extra Club Fundraiser we have 2 opportunities booked in:
  1. CLUB BBQ Fundraiser - SATURDAY & SUNDAY 17-18th APRIL, 8.30 - 4pm
  2. OPTIONAL CLUB BBQ, TBC - As above, the following weekend (24-25th) if we want it.
  • It seems a lot but when broken down, it is just 2 day events and 3 weekends.  It will be a piece of cake if we spread it out on a roster.
  • Please put your name forward to Ross, with your preferred day and time available asap ross.beal@slingshot.co.nz
As discussed at recent meetings, the Board is investigating prices and styles for an official Club Polo shirt, so we all look smart while at work or play.  Being ‘People of Action’ these shirts should get a real work out, especially with the Bunnings BBQ’s coming up soon.

We will try and keep the price as low as possible.  I will hopefully have more info on this before the next meeting.  We are also considering investing in a few other items like a branded Gazebo, pull up banners and a sandwich board.  This is long overdue and I am sure you will appreciate the value and importance to have a professional and attractive public image and profile.  It will help create interest in our Club and make us more visible.

We are continuing to grow and have recently welcomed new member Karen Spires to our Club.  Karen has transferred from Auckland Downtown Rotary Club.

So, have you asked someone this week if they want to join Rotary?  You are the best advocate; don’t keep our great Club and all the good work we do a secret.  Ask someone today.

Take care everyone.
Yours in Rotary
President Lee-Ann

'SERGEANT'S COLLECTION' - 23 FEBRUARY
Moved by David and Gabrielle’s recent experience on a local walking track in coming across a walker suffering a cardiac arrest, and the work of members of the public, fire fighters and ambulance staff in keeping him alive for a period of time, members gave in excess of $300 to St John (a charitable trust).

'LIVING OPTIONS' PRESENTATION - 23 FEBRUARY

This week Alison and Olivia Wildey, winners of the ‘Impact 100’ Women’s Group grant for 2020, spoke about the role of their organisation. Living Options is a a charitable trust providing individualised support to people with disabilities in Central Otago whilst enabling them to remain within their community.

The centres are a safe haven for people with disabilities and provide activity programs that include art classes, music therapy, cooking, organic gardening, sport and school holiday programs.

Founded by Alison in Alexandra 20 years ago, they are now expanding to the Wakatipu having acquired a house at 14 Nairn Street, Arrowtown as an Activity Centre.  The ‘Impact 100’ grant is being used to fit out the house and to employ tutors to run activity programs.

GUEST SPEAKERS - 16 FEBRUARY 2021

16 February saw 3 presenters from Wakatipu High School updating us on their recent activities sponsored by our Rotary club.

Unable to be present personally, Cameron Scobie provided a video of his highlights and experiences on his ‘Mind, Body & Soul’ course at Outward Bound.

Hannah Battrick and Linus Ritchie presented on their ‘great experiences’ at the recent Rotary National Science Forum in Auckland.  It is at this forum that science students explore the various facets of engineering available to them for future careers.  Highlights included working in teams, learning how the brain works and making new friends with similar future interests.

Hannah now intends to pursue 'Bioengineering' at the end of her school education. Bioengineering applies the principles of biology and the tools of engineering to create useful products such as artificial internal organs and body parts.
Linus will study 'Mechatronics' Engineering at Canterbury University. Mechatronics focuses on the engineering of electronics, electrical and mechanical engineering systems.

Here we, in Rotary, are helping young people determine the paths that they want to take in science and engineering for their future careers.

HOME SHOW FUNDRAISING DUTIES

Rotarians, ably organised by Pat & Bruce Jefford, assisted the 'Home Show' management with car parking and entry door duties from Friday to Sunday last week. Being hot sunny days, Alan Ward was found hiding in the shade.

THE BUNNINGS 'BBQs'
The Easter period will see Rotarians provide several BBQ’s over the period of Bunnings opening 30 March to mid April.  A Bunnings Committee has been formed under the chair of PP Ross Beal. More details shortly with requests for ‘chefs extraordinaire’.  This is an opportunity for us to recoup income lost from the cancellation of the NZ Open Golf (due to COVID-19).

DUTIES NOTICES & APOLOGIES
PDG Derek Bulman works hard to ensure you enjoy a varied and interesting programme each week.  He also is the one who allocates the Duties, and he asks that you please read the following information to ensure the meetings go smoothly.

Meet & Greet - this now includes the job of ‘meeting set-up’.  Please try and be at the venue by 5.20pm to ensure enough time to set up the meeting area which includes –
  • making sure the podium is in position and the microphone and stand is in position at the podium.  If you have time and know how, please also do a sound check.  If you don’t know or can’t do a sound check, let President Lee-Ann know.
  • Please check with the guest speaker if they have an AV presentation and ask if they need the big screen or TV set up.  If you DO know how to do it, please have it ready before the meeting starts.  If you DON’T know, you will need to ask a staff member to help.
  • Put the banner up, on the front of the podium
  • Put the sergeant hat and tray out on the head table.
The 3 Minute Talk or Toast to a Rotary Project/Club - Unless pre organised with Derek or Lee-Ann, this is to be strictly between 3-5 minutes.  No longer please.  If you want to make it longer than 3-5 minutes, please make these arrangements before the meeting starts.

Apologies - If you have a duty and can’t do it, you are responsible to organise a replacement.  If you do not put in a meeting apology, you will be invoiced for your meal.  If you are unsure, you can put in a permanent apology.  It is easier to inform the restaurant of an extra meal than the Club having to pay for meals not claimed.
