Russell's Ramblings
Believe it or not we are now on the home stretch of the current Rotary Year with the 30th June rapidly approaching and, as I mentioned in an earlier Bulletin, the words of our Community Director Ashley ‘It’s just like a roll of toilet paper – the closer you get to the end the faster it disappears.’
Last Sunday a few of us farewelled the Tasmanian Professional Development Team after completing their study tour that focused on Agriculture and Tourism. They were full of enthusiasm from our time spent at Camp Glenorchy, the views from Skyline, the Shotover Jet experience, the Earnslaw to Walter Peak experience and a walk around Arrowtown. They transferred the Alexandra / Cromwell clubs and, after covering most of our district including Stewart Island and Milford Sound, they returned to Queenstown to fly home. Two of the Tasmanians extended their time in New Zealand.
What a great night we had with our 'Un-Sung Hero’s' and being able to acknowledge their involvement in our great community. Thanks to our Honorary Member - His Worship the Mayor, Jim Boult, for presenting the awards to Betty Hanan for her work with the Can Shop, Barbara Syme for her work with Citizens Advice Bureau and Elbert de Koning for his work with pest eradication in the Wakatipu.
Our next two meetings should be of special interest, especially this week when David Mayhew will speak about Queenstown Airport and, on 28 May, our District Governor’s wife Barbara will be speaking on the time leading up to the current year, her role this year, and her reflections on the 2018/19 year.
Last week 14 May we held our 2nd annual 'Unsung Heroes' awards evening to recognise very deserving members of our community that give a lot to voluntary organisations that benefit our community. This year's recipients were Elbert de Koning (for services to the Wakatipu Wildlife Trust), Barbara Syme (Citizens Advice Bureau) and Betty Hanan (Cancer Society Shop - Can Shop). The presentations were made by our Mayor an Jim Boult.
Rotarians will have received this flyer via email. Bob Craigie and Ashley Adams will be looking for help on the day (Sunday 23 June). Mitchell Mackersy are again coordinating the event.
Note that when someone agrees to buy a duck, tell them to follow the instructions on this flyer. Also let Joan Kiernan know so she can monitor their payment.
If you will be away, or for some other reason you cannot do your duty on the nominated day, it is your responsibility as soon as possible, and certainly no later than the Monday night before the meeting, to arrange a substitute. A swap with the person who has the duty the next week is suggested.
Please be there by 5.25 pm if you are on Reception or Meet & Greet.
