Well what a great Change Over Night last week and I thank you all for making it the night that it was.  We were fortunate to have District Governor Elect Andrew Hamilton in attendance who inducted Darren Rewi as the newest member and also presented Paul Harris Fellows Sapphire Awards to our current Secretary, Chris Taylor, and to Geoff Dalzell.  Both have extended their Rotary commitment well and beyond what would be expected of Rotarians who have decided to, so call, retire in the Wakatipu Area.

Darren, welcome to Rotary and congratulations to Chris and Geoff.

So now we enter the year ahead and I’m sure that all of us will make sure that our 2018/19 year will be a great year as we enter the 75th Anniversary of Rotary in Queenstown.

I’m looking forward to the year ahead and I trust and hope that you are also looking forward to being part of the team to make it happen.
CHANGEOVER NIGHT ADDRESS
Our new International President Barry Rassin has set his theme for the year as ‘Be the Inspiration’.  In other words, let Rotary be inspirational within our Communities, let us all be inspirational within our Membership, and of course within the wider world.

I would have to say that I am somewhat a traditionalist, however at the same time, I will always be open to look at and incorporate new ideas, or projects, or incentives which will enhance Rotary’s involvement in our local community.  Of course, this will assist us to be a major part of the wider Queenstown Community for years to come.

I believe in communication, dialogue and listening to members points of view.

Rotary throughout the world, is generally struggling with keeping up with modern technology, and more especially how and what our younger generation want and expect, to be part of such an organisation.  We must listen to them and adapt accordingly.

A couple of weeks ago Bruce Boivin gave us some statistics from his year as President in 1994.  With a membership in the 70’s and a far lower age bracket than that of today we were a really vibrant Rotary Club.  He in fact made the comments of inducting a much younger Alan Ward and Stuart MacLean during his term as President.

I have taken on board at least a couple of activities which occurred during Bruce’s year.  One is to have Inner Wheel Members take over one of our meetings and Inner Wheel President Pauline is taking this idea to her Board.  I’m sure that we shall be looking at a night of great entertainment.

CHANGEOVER NIGHT
Tuesday 26 June was our annual Changeover Night at Wild Thyme Restaurant where President Monica handed the chain of office to incoming President, Russell McGrouther.  Approx 50 guests, including Russell's family and partners of Rotarians were there.

Darren Rewi was inducted into Rotary by incoming District Governor Andrew Hamilton.  Chris Taylor and Geoff Dalzell were awarded sapphire pins to their current Paul Harris Fellowship Awards for their continued high level of commitment and and hard work to Queenstown Rotary.  Kerry Dunlop was presented the Pauline Hazelmore Trophy for 2017/2018 in recognition of his leadership and major contribution to the Tucker Beach Trail (Pauline Hazelmore was Queenstown Rotary's first woman member who donated this award in addition to a bequest for our club to support local cancer sufferers and their families.

THE 'DUCK' RACE 2018
Sunday 24 June, at the end of Winter Festival, saw our 2018 Rotary Duck Race held on Horne Creek.  44 ducks were entered from Queenstown companies to raise just under $16,000 for 'Sustainable Queenstown' to purchase a vehicle to collect food from hotels and supermarkets to distribute to the needy in our community.  In addition there were prize sponsors including Countdown ($5,000).

The winning duck was from 'Provisions' Arrowtown and 2nd place went to 'Public Kitchen with Gay Pride'.  Best dressed duck was from Rilean Construction.

A big thank you to all who assisted, including on the day.  A special thanks to the organiser - new Rotarian Gemma Zust.  What a fantastic effort - well done Gemma!

FROM THE DISTRICT GOVERNOR

A new Rotary year has started, and I thought I would email all Rotarians in District 9980 to introduce myself, the Assistant District Governors, and to pass on some dates for your diaries.

For those I have not met before, my name is Andrew Hamilton.  I belong to the Dunedin Central Rotary Club, and I have the privilege to be your District Governor for the 2018/19 Rotary year.  I am married to Barbara and we have two daughters.  Abbey is in her first year of University study, and Laura is in Year 12.

Barbara and I look forward to meeting as many Rotarians in the District as we can over the next twelve months.
