It's been an awesome couple of weeks with a fair bit happening.  We have had some great guest speakers and a fantastic off-site night at Buzz Stop.  Nick and Rosie are real ‘honeys’ and were great hosts.  They are ‘busy as bees’ with the cafe, the wine tasting and the hive operations.  Personally, I’m not particularly fond of getting too close bees, but Nick and Rosie have built a thriving business and things are really ‘humming’.  Nick has grown-up with bees and is a 4th generation beekeeper.  It was a real ‘buzz’ to be able to support this local business this month.  We also enjoyed the company of special guests Ruth McGrouther, Kim Knight, Wellington Rotarian Joy Durrant and her brother David, and Wakatipu High School teacher Rebecca Lund.

The project at the Lakeland Park camp is coming along great guns thanks to Riki Hunter, PE Jason Climo and Tony Fleming.  Last weekend they turned up with the big boys’ toys to level the site and dig the post holes.  This weekend, the posts went in and are braced ready for the concrete this week.  Thank you to John Thompson, Keith McIntosh and my Hamish for helping.  There’s probably about 3-4 weekends left to finish, including landscaping.

A couple of notices:

I need to remind you that apologies must be reported if you can’t make it to the Holiday Inn.  We are still charged by the restaurant for your meal and therefore it is costing the Club at the moment.  This is not fair to the other members so, from this week, if you do not put in an apology and the restaurant charges us, we will have to invoice you.

The ‘Great Debate’ is coming up on 22nd September.  I have tickets for those who have requested them.  If you haven’t paid me yet, please refer to my earlier email with my bank account number.  I have also emailed you the ‘Brazz’ menu.  We are required to pre-order to save time.  Can you please email me with your meal choices asap.  I will be sending out reminders this week.

For the members who have their own tickets and wish to join us for dinner, can you let me know and I will send you the menu and reserve you a seat.

GOOD NEWS!!  We were successful with our application for a District Grant for our next community project, the Tucker Beach Trail Shelter’.  The grant is for $1423.00.  This project is held up due to a frustratingly slow response rate from DOC and other powers that be.  Kerry Dunlop is chasing this up and will report to us as soon as he has more information.

Tony Fleming will be in touch soon with those who have volunteered to help him with the burn-off at Tucker Beach.

As I mentioned, the evening at Buzz Stop was also a fundraiser.  Thank you all for supporting this.  We raised a total $915.00 made up of meals excess money and the very exciting and amazing auction result.  Of the $575 raised from the auction, ½ will go to ‘Give Every Child A Future’ (GECAF), Rotary/Unicef cause ($287.50) and the other half will go to Polio+.

A few members have asked for more info on ‘GECAF’.  When I first heard about it, I immediately wanted to be involved.  It is a project that is basically in our backyard and one where we can make a real difference in the lives of the children of our Pacific neighbours.

Taken from the D9980 website:  In parts of the Pacific, nearly 1 in 16 children die before their 5th birthday.  We’re going to stop that!
2021 marks the 100th anniversary of Rotary in Aotearoa New Zealand, and this is being marked by a number of projects.  In the lead up to 2021, Australia and New Zealand in collaboration with UNICEF have a bold ambition:  to immunise 100,000 of the most disadvantaged children across the Pacific in 4 years.
Across 9 Pacific nations, we will help introduce 3 lifesaving vaccinations to prevent diseases like cervical cancer, severe diarrhoea, pneumonia, blood infection and meningitis.

Rotary’s support will also help sustain the local health system for the sustainable delivery of vaccinations so that future generations will continue to benefit in the long term.  A truly inspiring Rotary legacy.  Will this be your Centenary Legacy Project?

Reminder:  Have you asked someone this week if they want to join Rotary?

See you on Tuesday.  We have John Quinn, a local from Queenstown Toastmasters, as our guest speaker.  John is a presentologist, his business is called ‘AudienceAlive’.

BUZZ CAFE OFF-SITE MEETING - 1 SEPT
As indicated in Lee-Ann’s blog, last Tuesday’s visit was to Buzz Stop for an insight into Nick and Rosie’s business, sample Mount Michael’ wine and enjoy pre-ordered burgers from their cafe.

It was 5 years ago that Nick and Rosie made the approach to utilise the ‘Grants’ woolshed and they since put a lot of effort and time into renovation work to make it what it is today.  They have been operating their business now for 2 ½ years.

We learnt that Nick’s great-grandmother was the first beekeeper in Otago (over in the Ida Valley), that their Wakatipu hives focus on local alpine wild flowers, and that female honey working bees have a life of just 46 days (amongst other things).  We were also informed about the current challenge, by Australian beekeepers, over the use of the ‘Manuka’ name in making and selling their honey.

Another interesting and social Rotary off-site ‘vocational’ visit as we learn about businesses and activities in our Wakatipu community.

GUEST SPEAKER 25 AUGUST - WHS STUDENTS
The Wakatipu High School ‘Give Time’ App.

The new App 'Give Time' opens new opportunities for Rotary and Wakatipu High School future collaboration.

On 26 August we had three enthusiastic Wakatipu High School students, Charlotte, Neave and Lillie (led by their Technology Teacher, Rebecca Lund) introducing the new App 'Give Time' that they have been developing as a technology project to better enable students to volunteer for organisations and projects.

The aim is to get students volunteering within their community and to encourage this culture in young people.  They are seeking partnerships to continue the Apps development, including funding.

The concept is that students use the App to instantly link up with organisations and charities in order to volunteer and assist them in their work.  It connects the parties together quickly, limiting barriers e.g. time and has a safety element included.

This App development has appealed to young women with a consequent 400% increase in girl students taking up the ‘Hard Materials Technology Biology’ program at Wakatipu High School.

Rotarians could see the usefulness of the App in engaging our local youth to assist us with our community projects.

LAKELAND CAMP CLIMBING WALL PROJECT
On 29 August we have started the new climbing wall at Lakeland Christian camp at Kelvin Heights. A great new Rotary community project.

Week 1:  The team of Riki Hunter, Jason Climo, Tony Fleming and Tony Robins, with President Lee-Ann on site, preparing the site and drilling the holes utilising their work equipment.

Week 2.  The Team of Riki Hunter, Jason Climo, John Thompson, Keith Mc and Hamish Murray, with President Lee-Ann "camp liaison and camera", placing the 150mm posts and getting them aligned ready for the concrete pour the next week.

FOUNTAIN OF PEACE NEWSLETTER - AUGUST 2020

2020 FOUNDATION DINNERS

This year's Rotary Foundation Fundraising Dinners will be held on Tuesday October 6th.

We are looking for members who are willing to be a Host this year.  Please ask the other significant stakeholder in your household if it is ok and then let Joan or Lee-Ann know.

The costs this year have been set at $30pp for the Hosts and $45pp for the Guests, so each six-person event will raise $240.  Hopefully we will have 6-8 events and raise almost $2,000 towards our annual TRF objective.

The Hosts provide the main course, tea & coffee and any entertainment they wish to inflict.  The Guests bring a smaller course and their own drink of choice.  It is up to the Host to tell the guest what to bring or it can be a pot luck event.  Whatever takes your fancy.

If this date doesn't work, as long as everyone in your group agrees, the date of your dinner can be moved.
