Russell's Ramblings

A couple of years ago my neighbourhood changed with Noel and Robyn Dunlop transferring to Christchurch.  I had the opportunity to meet our new neighbours, firstly the wife/mother and then the children aged 11 - 13 who introduced themselves individually and at the same time offered a hand of friendship.

I was reminded of this neighbourly act of friendship at our meeting a couple of weeks ago when we had the Wakatipu High School Principal Steve Hall and the Head Boy and Girl, Archie Ritchie and Gracie Hansby, speaking. For that same meeting, David Broomfield had arranged for his grandson Louis Conway, who is very much part of the senior section of the ,to be present and hear what his Principal and fellow students had to say.

When I arrived, I proceeded to set up the microphone and sound system before ordering my Pinot Gris and was approached by Louis, firstly to introduce himself to me and secondly to offer any assistance required.  An act of kindness that I really appreciated.  At this stage David was involved in a Trustees meeting.

As the meeting progressed we soon heard of the leadership skills being passed on by Steve and a wonderful response from Gracie and Archie. Archie spoke of his experience attending the National Rotary Science Forum in Auckland earlier in the year and of his gratitude for being selected as one of two from that forum to attend the International Science Forum in London later in the year.  Two years ago, both of the Queenstown participants at that year’s forum were selected to attend the international event in London.  This certainly shows the calibre of many of the Wakatipu High School students which must ultimately reflect the very high standard of leadership being shown by Steve and his teaching team.

As you will see throughout the Bulletin, we have a hectic time ahead of us.  The Home Show this weekend, NZ Open Golf barbeques this coming week, The Cancer Society Walk For Life (Breakfast) on 16/17 March, the Tasmanian Professional Development Exchange 16/19 April and of course the District Conference in Oamaru 26 – 28 April.

A grateful thanks to all those who have assisted with recent collections and the Feehly Hill clean-up, The Home Show and to those who have indicated their willingness to assist with the forthcoming barbeques.

See you on Tuesday.

Russell

SPEAKER DEREK BULMAN
Our speaker last week was our very own Derek Bulman (PDG). Derek spoke of his life and his business experiences which had us all captivated.

We learned everything from his working on the Night Cart in Waikiwi (Invercargill), to falling off his bike into offal ponds, to retrieving windows from a complex that he his business had recently installed.  He had gained prior knowledge that the developer was about to go into liquidation (it happened the following day).

Derek's disposition of enjoying life and experiences came through. No wonder that we all enjoy his positive attitude and company so much.

We are looking forward to more inspiration from Derek in a further instalment(s).

VISIT FROM WAKATIPU HIGH SCHOOL'S PRINCIPAL & HEAD STUDENTS

Wakatipu High School's Head Girl Gracie Hansby, Head Boy Archie Ritchie and Principal Steve Hall attended a recent meeting.

Background on Archie:

He is the ultimate all-rounder - exceptional both academically (top of his year) and as an athlete.  He is vice captain of the WHS football team, has represented Otago in football, regularly does triathlons and marathons, swimming, cycling and skiing. He coaches football in his spare time.  He has attained Gold Level in the Duke of Edinburgh programme and will be going to Outward Bound later this year.

He attended the Science & Technology Forum in January and won one of the only two trips to the LIYSF (London International Youth Science Forum) on 24 July.  He got a lot from the Auckland forum, but his stand out was talking with the ‘Youth Advisors’ who mentor and coach the students while on the Forum.  He was inspired so much that he is going to sign up to be an advisor at future forums and also to implement a similar program into WHS as part of his Head Boy goals for the year.

He was overwhelmed and extremely grateful at the opportunity Rotary gave him to attend the forum. It has changed his life and given him new focus and ideas for his career pathway decisions that he will be making this year.

FOUNDATION COMMITTEE AUCTION

The Foundation Committee is organising an auction to be held at our regular Club meeting on Tuesday March 12th.

We are asking that each Rotarian source or donate one item for the auction - it can be an actual object, or an experience or anything any of you can get donated by a local business.

In the past we have auctioned objects we no longer need or want at home, dinners, bike rides, driving outings.....anything you can come up with will be very welcome.

Rotarians are also encouraged to invite non-Rotary friends to come along and bid.

More details to follow on the running order for the evening, but start thinking now about what you might be able to source or donate. The deadline for letting us know what you have will be March 5th."

Thanks

Joan
