DISTRICT CHANGEOVER- AWARD WON

On Saturday the 28th of June, Lee-Ann and Hamish Murray attended the District Changeover in Dunedin.

The Rotary Club of Queenstown was awarded the PDG Lyn Holmes District Project Trophy for our work on our Adopt-A-Plot project. Recognised for the impact this has on controlling wilding pines.

Special thanks must go to Richard Bowman for his dedication and focus to our club's Environmental program.

Adopt-A-Plot is just one of many environmental projects, others include the Gully at Lakeland Park, and our collaboration with the Arthur's Point group, KAPOW.

Thanks to the club members who have been involved and taken the walk into our plot site.

The view never ceases to amaze. It feels like a privilege indeed to be involved in this important project.

MEMBERS NIGHT - GUEST SPEAKER SIMON MANNING
On the 25th of June our guest speaker was Simon Manning, a Funeral Director born in 1963.

Simon's early experiences with his grandparents' deaths sparked his interest in becoming a funeral director. He pursued this career from a young age, starting with cleaning duties and gradually gaining more responsibilities. After overcoming initial challenges, including a harsh interview at E. Morris Junior, he eventually found a position at Litchgate Funeral Home.

Simon's career progressed as he trained in embalming and funeral directing, eventually becoming a qualified professional. He noted the shift from family-owned funeral homes to corporate management, which led him to establish his own business, Harbour City Funeral Home, in 1989. Despite initial financial constraints, his company thrived, expanding through acquisitions and opening new branches. By 2023, the business had grown significantly, and he sold it to Propel Funeral Partners, joining their board.

Simon also established the New Zealand Funeral Disaster Response Team, contributing to various major disaster responses, including the Christchurch mosque shootings and the White Island eruption. His efforts earned him a QSO for services to the funeral industry. Additionally, he mentioned his involvement in Rotary and community activities, including a vineyard project that raised substantial funds for charity.

Reflecting on his extensive career, Simon emphasised the importance of empathy and professionalism in the funeral industry, contrasting the present standards with those of the past. Now, he is looking forward to a gap year and exploring new opportunities.

If there are any members available to attend, please contact David Tait ASAP.

On Tuesday 2nd of July, we will officially open our new junior playground and ten new classrooms, with a formal opening ceremony and afternoon tea.

We invite you to join us on Tuesday 2nd July from 1pm - 2.15pm to see how our school has changed to better reflect the needs of our students. With some additional works planned, we will also launch the QPS Project to help make our full masterplan a reality.
Join us on the day to celebrate what’s been achieved, as we look forward to some exciting additions in our near future.

We look forward to hearing from you and hope you can join us on Tuesday.

THREE MINUTE TALK - KERRY DUNLOP

I have heard so many interesting three-minute talks since being a member of the Queenstown club, but this week's made me smile.

It was an entertaining story by Kerry Dunlop. He spoke about his skiing adventures in 1946 at Coronet Peak in Queenstown.

Kerry spoke about the large skis, the lack of safety catches, and how ski boots were modified to fit the skis. Ski pulleys were also utilized to climb up the mountain. Overall it was a light-hearted journey of how far technology has developed in the ski industry and in Queenstown.

This link displays photos of Coronet Peak in the late 1940s and the ski pulleys used.
