The first two formal meetings as President are now behind me and, based on the feedback of the presentation from William Ruharuza from Fountain of Peace Uganda, was well received.

William enjoyed presenting to the Club and appreciated the hospitality extended to himself and his wife Stella.

Last week we heard from A.J.Mason, speaking about the recent Luma Display and the Science experiments conducted in the Lab in the Box.

We have also welcomed our inbound exchange student, Hanna Bergea Nygren from Sweden, to the Club for her year in Queenstown.

Hanna is a delightful young lady who, I believe, will be an asset to the club during her cultural exchange with us.  Thanks to Counsellor Darren Rewi for the welcome in Te Reo that he delivered on Tuesday night.

I would also encourage members to ensure that Hanna is well received and granted opportunity to share experiences, meals, outings with her as the opportunity arises.

The first Board meeting of this Rotary year will be held on Monday 5th August and we will feed key information back to you at the earliest opportunity.

I am also planning that this meeting will be followed shortly thereafter by a Club Assembly.  The purpose being to both report back to you, the members, and I am keen to understand what you, the members, are seeking from the Rotary this year.

Welcome back to the Club tourists, Chris Taylor, Ron Mackersy, Bruce Boivin, and Ralph Hanan.  We will be keen to hear each of you talk about your travels and exploits in the next few weeks and so I am sure that Stuart will be speaking to you in this regard soon.

Take Care -Winter is nearly over.

Cheers
Ross

GUEST SPEAKER 23 JULY
Our speaker on Tuesday 23 July was AJ Mason.  The Club, through our Trust, had supported AJ bringing LUMA and "Lab in a Box" to Queenstown to the tune of $1500.  AJ thanked the Club for making his event possible and went on to describe his various projects including Catalyst, Science Buskers Academy (WHS), LUMA and Lab in a Box.  4500 people went through the exhibit and AJ showed a video, which has had thousands of views, of the students conducting various science projects relating to light.

WELCOME TO RYE STUDENT HANNA BERGEA NYGREN

Hanna arrived in NZ on Friday 19th July to a very warm welcome at the airport. It has taken her all week to get over her jet lag.  Hanna attended her 1st Rotary meeting on the 23rd and was given a special Maori welcome by Fellow Darren Rewi and President Ross.

Hanna is 17 years old and will attend Wakatipu High School, starting on Tuesday 30th July.  She comes from Nynashamn, Sweden and is sponsored by the Nynashamn Rotary Club.  Nynashamn is 60km south of Stockholm and has a population of around 14,000 people.

Hanna loves to dance and is part of a dance group which has a mixed range of styles and is also a cheerleader.  She also loves horseback riding and animals of all shapes and sizes.  At the age of 10, Hanna played violin as the final solo act at a concert to a stunned audience.  She also consistently attains top level grades at school and receives special grants and recognition awards.

Hanna is looking forward to her year in Queenstown and the big adventure that it holds.

QUEENSTOWN SEMINAR EVENT

I would be very grateful if you could encourage your wide network of members and friends to register to attend the free community education presentation I will be delivering in Queenstown on Friday 16 August – see event finder listing below. NB The Commission is an autonomous Crown agency, offers objective, impartial information.  This is not a marketing event.

The seminar discusses, in very frank and robust terms, the personal, legal and financial implications of retirement village living and what people need to consider before becoming a retirement village resident. This includes some discussion about the interface of villages with aged care.

Registering is important because seats are limited and tend to fill fast once word gets around, and also we need to have an idea of numbers as we supply tea and materials to registered attendees.

People can register online at the above link or by calling my assistant Paul Niccolini on 021 565 321

Many thanks

GOODWILL TOURS TO AFRICA

Hi, and greetings from Dirk and Marie.

We are sending you this information, as we thought that some of your Rotary members or chapters may be interested in joining one of our goodwill tours to Botswana, South Africa or Namibia. (or one of future African countries we are presently designing  goodwill itineraries for.)

BACKGROUND: Dirk has been a self employed tour guide throughout Southern Africa's countries all through the 1990s and later, together with Marie, traveled for three years from Capetown to Cairo. During this time, we both set up aid-projects in various African countries. We also distributed over a thousand Rotary rulers to many schools all over southern Africa. These were  donated by ROTARY KRUGERSDORP (near Johannesburg). (See a ruler photo attached).

METHOD: How the goodwill project tours happen is; Participants (including us) contribute US$100 towards achieving a modest goodwill project (typically something like sewing machines for a school, or perhaps mattresses for a destitute orphanage. These items may be transported by us, or through our local contacts.

As Rotary members you may want to do even more and we are happy to meet and discuss any project you may want to incorporate into a tour. We know many places (schools, missions, villages) that are indeed in need of many items to relieve the hardship they live in.

These are non-commercial tours, and you will see that the prices reflect this. Given our joint experience of touring Africa, we aim to give everyone a great holiday which includes sightseeing and safari tours among wildlife. If a group wishes to be private to their own members, then six seats is the minimum.

We would welcome your interest to join us in contributing to good-will in our world.

Deposits:

  1. A $200 pp deposit:  Immediately secures your seat.  This is non-refundable, unless your seat is resold.
  2. A 60% deposit:  Is paid approximately 15 months before departure.  As we are not a block-book commercial organization, owing to market demand, we need to secure group accommodation/activity/vehicle reservations about 15 months in advance.  The 50% deposits are paid immediately to lock them in.
  3. Final payment:  This is made 3 to 4 months before departure.  Rooms are all twin share (or king/queen for couples).  Singles may have to pay a single surcharge if the other bed is not filled.

Attached are the itineraries for the Botswana 2021, Namibia 2021 and South Africa 2022. Prices and dates you will find in the itineraries.

We'd so love it if you would join us on one of these tours! Members will have a great time, view plenty of wildlife, see the beauty of Africa and be personally involved in a goodwill project.

We wish you all the best and many enjoyable travels.

This letter and attachments of travel itineraries have only been sent to the districts Governors.
If this is something Rotary would be interested in, please let all your members know.

Dirk and Marie Nicasi
