Russell's Ramblings

Rotary Youth Exchange District Committee have advised us that they have selected seven outbound students for the next calendar year, leaving in January 2019.  Two of those selected are from Queenstown and we have been asked to sponsor both of them.

They are Ella Numaguchi and Leah Kissock.  Ella spent her younger years in Moab, USA and later she and her family shifted to Queenstown.  She really enjoys the outdoors especially tramping.  In 2017, after 5 years of training, she was awarded her Karate Black Belt.  She has promoted and been part of the 40 hour famine and last year was involved in 'Cook for a Cause' which involved cooking 6,000 meals in 40 hours.  This project raised $20,000.  In her own words ‘having a part in these activities gives her a sense of purpose and pride in, hopefully, having made a difference in someone else’s life”.  Ella will be spending a year in Belgium and she says that she has never before been so excited for something and she is now counting down the days before her departure.

Leah was born in Dunedin.  She is also a current student at Wakatipu High School.  Reading through her biography she is very proud of her family and of their achievements.  She has been a leader, especially during her high school years, and has always held an interest in giving a voice to the under-represented and has been an active member of the school's Student Council.  Snowboarding is one of her major winter activities and she is a very keen badminton player.  During the last two years she has been the leader of the Wakatipu High School Debating Club. She is also a member of the Central Otago Representative Debating Team.  Leah is going to Denmark next year.

This will be a tremendous experience for both of them.  We will arrange for both of them to come along and introduce themselves to our membership.

We have been extremely lucky in recent years to have such a high calibre of students that we have sponsored.  I think that it is certainly our turn to put our hand up and offer to host a student or two and I have asked our Youth Committee to explore this avenue.

The Board has now resolved to support both these students.
VISITING GUEST FROM JAPAN

Queenstown Rotary often hosts visiting international Rotarian guests but it is unusual to have a guest Rotarian from a Japanese club visit us.  Last Tuesday, Takao Kinoshita from the Rotary Club of Kanazau South (part of Yokohama City) visited us.  Takao was here on a skiing holiday.  Photo shows Takao and our President, Russell, exchanging club banners.

RECENT GUEST SPEAKERS
On 24 July we had a presentation from Robyn Francis from Happiness House.

Robyn is very passionate about her role and is doing a great job.  One of their major concerns is their current location and the need for a longer term lease.

Our Rotary club is very happy to support them as much as we can as this is a much needed service in our community.

On 31 July we heard from Peter Newport from the Crux Media Trust - 'changing the way that journalism works'.  The trust has received government funding to promote local stories. Peter explained that journalism has often been based on opinion. The Crux approach adopts a 'craft of journalism based on the truth - the consensus of the opinion of the audience'.
His new way of getting views to the local public will be intriguing.  Peter expressed a real enthusiasm for journalism leaving us in no doubt that, if all those reporting situations followed this new approach, the issues presented to the public would be better appreciated and less challenged and doubted.
Peter's presentation attracted a lot of questions, opinions and comments from his Rotary audience.
