Presentations and workshops at COP28 highlight community-led solutions and partnerships.

If all the climate change solutions, from electric cars to wind turbines, there’s a powerful one that’s staring you in the face — at breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

CHRISTMAS FUNCTION

Last Tuesday was our club’s Christmas and end-of-year function at ‘Cargo Gantleys’ Arthur’s Point.  Over 40 Rotarians and partners attended pre-dinner drinks and a 3 course dinner.

Guest speaker was Craig (Ferg) Ferguson who provided an account of his rugby background and his role as a QLDC 3rd term Councillor.

Thanks to David Carter for donating a bottle of Gin for the raffle and to Lee-Ann & Hamish for donating the cheese, crackers, and tonic.  The raffle raised $485 - won by Roger Marsh.

A nice way to finish off Rotary activities for the year 2023.

RALPH HANNAN - GUEST SPEAKER 28 NOVEMBER
Ralph has recently returned from annual time in the USA.  His background is that of an economist with the World Bank for 40 years.  Ralph gave us his view of current politics and the economy of the USA as an example of what can happen in a democracy including NZ.

Ralph spoke of how increased GDP and profits can benefit capitalists rather than grass roots working people and that this situation can unbalance society.  He explained ‘populism’, a ‘political approach that appeals to people that feel that they have been disadvantaged’.

He indicated that there is optimism in the US that they will pull out of their current situation, as has occurred in the past post the ‘twin towers’ event and the global financial crisis.

VISITING ROTARIAN PAUL VINCENTI - 28 NOVEMBER
Paul and Tracey visited our club on 28 November.  They are travelling NZ and Australia and they hail from Perth, Scotland.  Paul is a member of the Perth Kinnoull Rotary Club.

Paul outlined his time as a rugby referee where he gained personal satisfaction from being part of the development of young people.

He suffered a cardiac arrest on the rugby field.  Wanting to be involved in his community, he joined Rotary and led a project called ‘Day Out.’  That project provided handicapped children with a day out event.

Paul outlined projects that his Perth Kinnoull Club are involved in including an international project in Malawi assisting a community achieve self-sustainability in providing their own food.  He spoke of a cycling event, which is a big income earner for them, and a calendar project.

THE BRANCHES TRUST
Jane and Baxter Bamford, and Thomas Colby spoke about the Trust that supports the annual branches’ camp for Wakatipu High School (WHS) students.  Established in 1967, it is the longest running camp ‘under canvas’ NZ.  The Trust is committed to making the camp affordable to students via fundraisers and grant applications.

The growth of WHS necessitated 2 camps this year with 150-160 students attending each camp.  Each camp is over 7 days and 6 nights.

Students participate in activities from housekeeping duties to team skill opportunities and challenges for many.  One such challenge involves climbing to Lake Lochnager.  The camps have a very positive influence on young people’s lives including building their confidence and overcoming their fears.

Because the camp is part of the school curriculum, the Trust relies predominantly on donations to enable camps to occur.  They do hold an annual Quiz Night.

The current cost to attend camp is $700-800 per child of which $350 is paid by the student’s families.  This is unaffordable for some.

Future events to raise money for the Trust include a ‘Sponsor a Child’ concept and a ‘4WD Monster Rally’ which will enable the public to experience ‘The Branches’ station - not normally open to the public.

CHRISTMAS  CAKE RAFFLE
Fiona Wiltshire again made 2 Christmas cakes for auction, one iced and 1 not iced.  The auction took place on at our club meeting on 28 November.

Jim and Cora Hewitt successfully bid for the iced cake (through an intermediary).  David Carter successfully bid for the non-iced cake then paid extra for it to be iced.

The auction raised $342 for a ‘yet to be determined’ Rotary cause.

Of note:  A BIG thanks to David Carter who has donated several bottles of wine, spirits and meat packs during the year for raffles.  These have raised at least $800.

RECENT FUNDRAISERS & 'MEALS ON WHEELS'
We were recently given the opportunity to park vehicles for the QLDC Christmas Show (2 events) and the Women’s’ ODI NZ White Ferns v’s Pakistan.  Altogether some $450 was raised.

A special thanks to Lee-Ann Murray who organised and participated in all events.  A thank you also to the 6 other Rotarians that assisted her.

Queenstown Rotary provided the Queenstown– Arrowtown “Meals on Wheels’ roster last week.  Special thanks to organiser Kerry Dunlop who did 2 shifts.  A thank you also to the 13 other Rotarians that also participated.
