As I write this the sun is shining, there is a wee bit of snow left on the Remarkables and the lake is smooth. What a great place we live in. If this sounds a bit mushy, it’s because I have just returned from 5 days up in Auckland to see family … so I need not say anymore!! But all jokes aside, although I love seeing my family, I love coming back too. It makes you realise how lucky we are to live here and I pinch myself every day.
Last week we had a ‘members night’ and, although there were many apologies, (you guys missed a great night) it was fun and interesting and we got to know more about 4 of our awesome members: Brain Dunstan, Tim Wilshire, Tony Fleming and Rebecca Hembrow.
The week before Jacqui Moir, from the Wakatipu Youth Booth, shared some insights into the state of the mental health our local youth and how they are, and how they are not, coping with COVID19 and the stresses of their everyday lives. It is obvious many youth are struggling so the safe place Jacqui provides at the Youth Booth on Red Oaks Drive is an essential community service. Jacqui, and her team of qualified counsellors and leaders, know how to help and guide them to the services and support they need.
Next week we have ‘quiz night’, run by Bruce Boivin. Remember to think of a team name and brush up on your general knowledge skills.
The week after, the 1st of June, we were supposed to visit Riki Hunters new wellness business, City Cave. However, due to overwhelming customer demand, the centre is booked out and we won’t be able to do our tour or walk around. The only way you’ll get to see all the wonderful services and equipment at the centre is to book in and experience it yourself. At our ‘members night’ last week we had really interesting insights provided by 4 or our members - Brain Dunstan, Tim Wilshire, Tony Fleming and Rebecca Hembrow.
Brian, just back from Perth (with Kerry) following lock down there, told us about the Perth COVID experience and the decisive strong government leadership in quickly closing their borders to the other Australian states and rest of the world . Restrictions were similar to NZ including no large gatherings. Western Australia fared well - they were locked down for 6-8 weeks, slightly longer than NZ, when restrictions were lifted.
Tim started with his work, an accountancy practice in Queensland, and his interest – ‘podcasting’. 3-4 years ago, in Queensland, Tim began listening to podcasts on topics of interest in preference to listening to radio. Since moving to NZ and Queenstown (with Fiona) he has now established ‘Resort Podcast’ in the Wakatipu and has produced 16 episodes to date. He is approaching local people to hear and ‘podcast’ their stories - personal, roles etc).
Tony spoke about his earlier days and life whilst on his OE in England. He completed a chef’s apprenticeship and worked for NZ Breweries restaurants in London where he met his wife, Lynne. Over a period of time they set up 5 café/bars in London employing hundreds of kiwis working over there over time. Tony returned to NZ in 1986/87 (with Lynne) and started life as an arborist in Auckland in 1991. He went back to England to Guilford where he completed 4 months training in that profession. Tony established an arborist business in Auckland which he later sold in 2009 to move to Queenstown. Here he established ‘Treescape Southern Lakes’. Tony has since sold that business and now is focused on landscape earthworks in business with his son.
Rebecca took a creative and entertaining approach, consistent with her chosen role in teaching. She related great stories of her life experiences in England from her teenage years and beyond enabling us to get to know her better. Rebecca highlighted her 3 years’ experience teaching at Gordonston school in Scotland where she taught art and developed digital photography for the school. She spoke of her interests in the outdoors including diving, 4 wheel driving and motor biking which she currently enjoys. Rebecca, currently on sabbatical leave from teaching, is establishing a new business interest whilst continuing to teach.

In Kind Donations and Equipment Repurposing is a great way to support our Pacific neighbours. RNZWCS has been providing this assistance for a number of years, with a lot of effort on behalf of clubs in District 9970 (soon to be our friends in District 9999), so it is timely that we get involved in this amazing project, as the need for support in the Pacific Islands is ongoing , and this is a project that RNZWCS supports clubs to be involved with.
In-kind Donations & Equipment Repurposing is a RNZWCS activity that establishes an efficient and effective program for distributing obsolete medical, educational, and other equipment to disadvantaged communities overseas. Recipients with disabilities are a high priority.
District 9970 has a proud record of sending up to 4 containers annually.
A container is planned to go to Tonga from Christchurch in September. Only new and/or used goods in very good condition will be acceptable.

Mobile Health and Engage Safety are now offering NZQA certified First Aid and Basic Life Support (CPR), and Managing Emergency Situations courses. We are passionate instructors and endeavour to make the course and scenarios as relevant to our learners as possible.
The cost is $155 and covers NZQA US6401 and US6402, Basic Life Support, and First Aid, and $220 for NZQA US6400 Managing First Aid. Our cost includes morning and afternoon tea, and a light lunch.
