It’s been another satisfying 2 weeks in Rotary. We have enjoyed interesting and fun meetings and it was with much excitement, we were once again successful as a recipient of another ‘Generation Give’ major grant, worth $2,500, presented last Sunday.
These Grants are decided by a special committee of students at Wakatipu High School. We apply so that we are able to send more students on awesome leadership opportunities like Outward Bound, the Spirit of Adventure and the Whitbread Sailing courses.
Last week, I had the pleasure presenting a shared scholarship to two amazing Year 13 students at the Wakatipu High School’ (WHS) Senior Prizegiving Assembly. These scholarships are worth $1250 each and awarded for Diligence and Commitment’.
I was so thrilled to hear that our JR McKenzie Trust applicant secured one of just two places for an Outward Bound scholarship. Each Rotary District gets just 2 spots on the course and it has been many years since we have had our student selected. Cameron Scobie is in Year 12 at WHS, and provided me with an outstanding application. He really deserves this. He will attend the ‘Mind, Body and Soul’ course in December. We will get to hear all about it in the New Year.
Orders are open for the CHRISTMAS SALMON RUN. Be sure to let your neighbours, family and friends know. Orders close on November 26th. Fillets are all $50 and all weigh between 1.2kg-1.8kg. The fish are caught fresh the morning of delivery from the waters around Stewart Island. Delivery is approx. 2nd or 3rd December.
An order sheet is going around at meetings, or you can email David with your order and contact details - taitses@gmail.com Orders must be pre-paid to the ANZ account. Remember to put your name as the reference and salmon. Don’t miss out, order today! Thanks once again to David and Gabrielle for time organising this.
The two outings to Cardrona Distillery and the Cardrona Pub, and then the movies, proved to be a great success with many laughs and great food. Thank you all for your support.
COMING UP:
This week we look forward to learning about 5 of our newest members, who they are and what they love and do, and the skills and knowledge they bring to our Club.
On 24th November we have 2 guest speakers. Aaron Fleming has an amazing personal story and lives a very full and interesting life, and he is still in his 30’s. Also, Kaye Parker is coming to update us on how our large contributions to the ‘Greatest Need Fund’ has helped those in our community who have needed it most. This will be a fab night and I encourage you to invite anyone you think will be inspired by Aaron. He’s an incredible young man and has also agreed to speak at RYLA. I can’t wait to meet him.
The last off-site meeting for the year is at PE Jason’s place of work - Veolia. It’s going to be an interesting night, so if you are intrigued with seeing the role of Robotics in this industry and want to know how our towns drinking water and waste is managed, then you need to come along. Invited guests and partners also welcome. Please get numbers to me asap as Jason is responsible for the Health & Safety aspect for us all. Numbers need to be confirmed for the off-site caterers, so please confirm you can come on the attendance sheet this Tuesday or by email to the Club email queenstownrotary@gmail.com

An informative Rotary meeting with guest speaker Geoff MacDonald, Chief Executive of Skyline Enterprises last week. Geoff provided a brief history of the company, a global project update and details of the Queenstown projects including the ‘skyline’ building development and gondola enlargement.
Skyline is also involved with assisting many organisations throughout the region e.g. a programme for leadership and environmental initiatives.
This is a Central Otago Rotary family fun day for all members, partners, family and friends of the Wanaka, Cromwell, Alexandra and Queenstown Rotary Clubs.
Ask the kids or bring the grandkids for a fun day out. There’s safe swimming and games on the grassy area. Bring a football, the Boat, a blanket or chairs, a Gazebo if you have one, picnic set, food and drink.
It will be heaps of fun, and a good way to get to know other Rotarians or catch up with some mates.
If successful, it will be considered to make it an annual event.
Thank you everyone for making it possible for our Club to be able to purchase one of these precious and life-saving and life-changing Shelter Box kits. Jackie St John who came to visit us recently, was over the moon.
You can still make further contributions and purchase various accessories or additions to a Shelter Box kit. Ask President Lee-Ann or Ken Fox how. If you are interested in purchasing one of the solar lights Jackie brought with her, they are about $65 each. Great for the boat, camping, campervan or to have in the car in case of an emergency.
If you want to order one, please see President Lee-Ann.
The Rotary International Board meets in November 2020 and will consider a proposal by the Shaping Rotary’s Future Committee to move toward Regionalisation. Governance would move from the current 527 Districts to 20-40 Regions. This would allow more Regional autonomy and provide more support for Clubs, Rotarians and Rotaractors.
In January 2019, the RI Board approved a petition from the District Governors of Zone 8 (Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands) to propose a Regional structure and approach to halt membership decline, provide a stronger Rotary voice and better partnerships with government, business and communities. Our work since receiving that approval means we are well placed to modernise Rotary in our Region, if the RI Board votes to proceed toward Regionalisation. There have been articles covering this in ‘Rotary Down Under’ (Nov 2019, April and Sept 2020). Formal approval to establish Regional pilots will be required at the next Council on Legislation in April 2022. The earliest implementation in our Region would be for the 2023-24 Rotary year.
If you would like to receive a copy of the submission by our Region or have any questions, please email the project team at rotaryregionalpilot@gmail.com
