Russell's Ramblings

Spring is certainly in the air, so we shall be looking at some outdoor activities and the following are just a few either meeting or other activities that have ended up on our programme already.

This Tuesday’s meeting (4th September) WILL BE HELD AT HOLIDAY INN, FRANKTON ROAD when we shall be hosting our District Governor, Andrew Hamilton. THIS IS A PARTNER’S NIGHT. Andrew will be visiting the Tucker Beach Trail at 3.00pm with the Committee members and of course you are cordially invited to join with us there. He will meet with the board members at Holiday Inn at 5.00pm and then to our General Meeting at 6.00pm. As per the email sent be Secretary Chris.

Please inform Debra at Rilean details of any apologies (I hope only a few) as well as details of Partners attending. The meal cost there is $25.00 per head. One thing that we find is that alternative venues are generally not as kind to us as per our current arrangement with Wild Thyme. (Attendance wise). What I am indicating is that we need to have our numbers correct on that night as we will have to pay for the number we order for, not the number that arrives on the night and they normally require confirmation of numbers a little earlier than norm. Your assistance will be gratefully appreciated.

15th / 16th September is our AdEaters Project. As mentioned in previous issues the Project Committee have been meeting weekly for several months so now we are awaiting the ticket sales mainly through
Event Finder and are still looking for some extra hands on deck for both Saturday and Sunday performances. This is a major event for Queenstown and especially for Queenstown Rotary, so we need as many of you as possible to assist on the days.

On Tuesday 18th September we shall be introducing our two Outbound Rotary Youth Exchange Students and their respective families to the Club.

On 2nd October we will again be meeting at Holiday Inn with our Local MP, Hamish Walker being our Guest Speaker. This once again is a Partner’s Night and we have also asked Inner Wheel Members and their Partners to join with us on that night.

Kerry Dunlop is exploring the idea of holding the Official Opening of the Tucker Beach Trail along with a Quail Rise / Tucker Beach Community Day on SUNDAY 28th OCTOBER.
Guest Speaker Mike Henry
Our guest speaker Mike Henry has lived in Queenstown since 2006. With two Paul Harris Awards, Mike is a dedicated Rotarian of the St Johns Rotary Club in Auckland. He is involved with Plunket and other charities, however his passion is mental health.

Mike delivered an emotional and personal message to our Club this week, sharing his experiences and his views on the inadequate mental health services in our region.
Mental health is very topical at the moment and we are all aware of the problems many people face every day. Mike says there is help available but there is not enough and more needs to be done to provide help and support for sufferers and their families. Mike and his family have decided to do something about this and are in the process of raising funds to go towards solving the shortage of mental health facilities in Queenstown. The Henry family have developed a large prestigious garden on their Lower Shotover property and will be opening their beautiful Spring garden to the public on October 14th. Money raised from this day will go towards setting up a charity to benefit local people with mental illness.  If you are able to volunteer some time to assist Mike on October 14th, please talk to President Russell who can put you in touch with Mike.

Mental Health week runs from 8-14th October.

Rotary Events Coming Up.....

A District wide “Fun Day” is being organised for Saturday 10th November 2018. This will be a day when all Rotarians, and their families, in the District can get together, socialise and have a fun day out. There will be a Car rally involved, (an opportunity to raise funds for your club). We will all meet for lunch in Cromwell and enjoy some time at Highlands Park Raceway! This is being organised by the District Assistant Governors and should be a great day out. Further details will follow later, but in the meantime mark the date in your diaries!

Planning for the District Conference is well under way and we have had a steady stream of registrations. Just to remind you, the Conference is in Oamaru on April 26 – 28, 2019. There is a limit on the number of registrations we can take, so do not delay! If you have not already done so, appoint a Club member to be the conference co-ordinator and organise a group from your Club to attend what will be a fantastic weekend of catching up with old friends, making new friends, hearing some special speakers, along with the opportunity to be involved in a project.

The link to the Conference Website is: www.9980conference.co.nz

Hosts Required for 2019 Inbound RYE Students
Every year presents an awesome opportunity for families to be a Host for a Rotary Youth Exchange Student. Not only do the students get to find out how to "live like a local" and experience our beautiful country but host families can learn about the students country and form a relationship which usually leads to strong ties and somewhere to go and visit in the future.

Queenstown Rotary Club is seeking expressions of interest for four Host families from July 2019. These families can be Rotarians, Friends of Rotary or from outside of Rotary.  If you think this is something you could be interested in, please contact President Russell or Ashley Adams for further information.
The International Marathon Fellowship of Rotarians

IMFR (The International Marathon Fellowship of Rotarians) was formed after a group of French Rotarians developed the idea of having at least 100 Rotarians competing in the Paris Marathon during Rotary’s Centennial year in 2005. About 230 mainly Europeans and three from Australia took part. Since then they have met annually mainly in various European countries and in London and Australia. Their current President Kester Baines (Rotary Club of Kardinia, Geelong, Victoria, Australia District 9780 decided that he would like to take this event to New Zealand in general and Queenstown in particular.

There have been several communications between Kester and I during the last twelve months. They have arranged a tour throughout New Zealand flying into Auckland on 3rd November, travelling through the North and then the South Island via the West Coast and arriving in Queenstown on Thursday 15th November. This of course coincides with the Air NZ Queenstown Marathon in which they will take part in. They are a travelling group of 22 and at this stage there are an additional 9 who will be joining them for just the Queenstown events.
From Queenstown they travel to Milford Sound and overnight on the Milford Mariner. They then travel to Christchurch via Dunedin and return to their native homes on Thursday 22nd November.

SO WHAT’S OUR PART IN THIS EVENT?

We are arranging a Pasta Night for them on Friday 19th November at Wild Thyme and on Saturday 20th November a Dinner for them, most likely at Copthorne Lakeside where they are staying whilst in Queenstown. Both nights will of course be open for our club members and partners so that we can offer the hand of friendship and hospitality and make sure that their stay in Queenstown becomes a very memorable one for them. I believe that this is a great opportunity for us to ‘Show Case’ Queenstown and Queenstown Rotary and at the same time experience another International Rotary Event, on this occasion in our own back yard.

Please note your diaries accordingly and I trust that I have your full co-operation to making this one timer for Queenstown a great success.

The "Hipporoller" Project

The Rotary Clubs of Mosgiel, Milton, Taieri and Balclutha have supported The 'Hipporoller" project during the 2017-2018 year.  Together with a District Grant of $5000.00 they forwarded $10,000 to South Africa for the purchase of 46 Hipporollers, so these Clubs are getting some marvellous support from our District.

Currently, these Clubs are supporting a Global Grant application being promoted by the Chatswood Sunrise Club in Sydney, with a promise of a further USD$10,000 from the DDF fund of District 9980.  This application was sent to Rotary HQ in Evanston last week and await their deliberations with great anticipation.

According to the United Nations, 2.1 billion people live without access to safe water in their homes. Millions of women and children walk up to 6 hours a day to collect water with heavy 20l / 5gal buckets, balanced on their heads.  The Hippo Water Roller was developed in 1991 by two South Africans in response to the daily struggle of rural women and children across Africa to access safe, drinkable water.  The award-winning technology is a distinctive portable water innovation that enables rural communities to transport water more easily and in less time than with traditional methods.

Hippo Roller makes it extremely easy to collect water in tough rural conditions - up to 5x more water than a single bucket, by simply rolling it along the ground. The effective weight of the 90 kg drum is just 10 kg when pushed or rolled on level ground, making it very user friendly for women, children and the physically weak.

The 90 litre Hippo Water Roller is a strong and durable barrel-shaped container equipped with a steel handle with which it can be pushed or pulled.
The design of the Hippo Water Roller allows water to be placed ‘inside the wheel’ so that the weight is borne on the ground and distributed over a wide rolling surface.

Over 50,000 Hipporollers have been distributed throughout Africa to date. You can check it at  www.hipporoller.org  - it would be great if you can offer some support.
