PRESIDENTS BLOG

The Rotary Foundation is changing the world by providing funding grants for projects and activities around the globe.

At least 3,000 children die each day from diarrheal diseases caused by unsafe water, providing the impetus for Rotarians to provide toilets and latrines and other clean water initiatives in underdeveloped countries.

When people, especially children, have access to clean water, sanitation and hygiene, they lead healthier and more successful lives.  We don’t just build wells and walk away.  Rotary members integrate water, sanitation, and hygiene into education projects.  When children learn about disease transmission and practice good hygiene, they miss less school, and they can take those lessons home to their families, expanding our impact.

Rotary has issued a global challenge to its members, asking them to work collectively to improve education quality and access — particularly for girls — by working with communities to improve teacher training, curriculum, and water sanitation & and hygiene facilities.

$24 is all it takes to provide one person with safe water.  23 million people now have safe water and 21 million people have access to sanitation and hygiene thanks to Rotary projects.  Rotary aims to provide everybody in the world  with safe water, sanitation, and hygiene by 2030.

And here is a fantastic idea for helping the millions of women who have to haul water for their families every day - The Hippo Roller.  Our Club could do with a champion to raise funds for these on a regular basis.

ART AUCTION - 17 APRIL

LGBT NIGHT - 10 APRIL
Our Tuesday 10 April meeting heralded an unprecedented Rotary event in international Rotary circles - a LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender) Information Night. 17 LGBT’s within our community attended. This was an opportunity to showcase our Rotary Club and offer the hand of friendship to them - especially those who feel marginalised due to their sexuality.

Of significance, a letter of support from Rotary International President Ian Riseley was read in which he encouraged all Rotary Clubs and communities to welcome people of all diverse backgrounds. He hoped that this event would inspire us all to create positive and lasting changes in ways that will assist our clubs and communities into our future. There was a similar letter of support and encouragement from our own District 9980 Governor Bruce Cowan.

Key speaker Jacqui Moir, a counsellor to Wakatipu youth experiencing difficulties with their sexuality, spoke of the numbers of attempted suicides and self-harm etc due to abuse and bullying from fellow students. Programmes such as ‘Rainbow Youth’ and ‘Inside Out’ involve educating the educators to assist affected youth to better understand and their individual situations.

Steve McLean concluded the evening by describing personal family situations involving the gay preference – one a much loved uncle and the other his son.

A very successful evening for both the members of Queenstown Rotary and our LGBT guests showcasing our openness to, and acceptance of, sexual diversity within our community.

INTERNATIONAL FELLOWSHIP VISIT
Sunday 15 April saw the Dunlop’s, McIntosh’s, Robins and Chris Taylor’s host and entertain 10 Rotarian guests from the USA and Australia (and their tour guide) for dinner.

Their trip through NZ is an annual event organised by the Pakuranga Club in Auckland and their visit to Queenstown affords our club the opportunity to increase our contributions to the Rotary Foundation.

A very pleasant night was had by all - thanks to Kerry Dunlop for again organising this event.

Greg and Lorraine Bevan, from the Kurri Kurri and Cessnock clubs in the Hunter Valley (New South Wales) at the McIntosh dinner table with other guests Russell McGrouther and Natalie Morgan.
