Welcome to the first Bulletin for 2020.

I trust that you and your families have had the opportunity to relax, eat too much, hopefully drink not too much, and enjoy time with family and friends.
We finished 2019 with a fantastic Christmas function at the Holiday Inn attended, and hopefully enjoyed, by all of the 52 Rotarians and partners who attended.

You will recall that, at the Christmas function, I discussed the impact of the Measles epidemic on the world and with particular concern for our neighbours in Samoa. We noted the following stats:
  • In 2018 there were 353,000 cases of Measles and 140,000 deaths
  • In 2019 there have been 413,000 cases of Measles – 2,149 cases in N.Z. and 68 deaths in Samoa.
  • Polio by comparison : 2017 - 22 cases, 2018 - 33 cases, 2019 1st Qtr 1 - 2 cases.  Globally, and while deaths are not reported, 2-3% may be fatal.
On the back of my appeal for support we committed our fines and donations on the night to Samoa.

Along with the surplus from the Melbourne Cup evening, and the fines and donations generously provided that evening, we were able to send $1,100.00 to aid the cause.
My thanks.

We welcome back home to N.Z. Leah and Ella who have completed their Rotary Year Exchange in Europe and returned to Queenstown on 10 January.  We will be able to hear them report on their experience in a couple of weeks’ time.

By the time you receive this Bulletin our opening evening, a BBQ at the Tuckers Track picnic area, will be over. At the time of writing we anticipated around 42 attending which is an excellent start to the year.

Between the N.Z. Golf Open, the Hospice Appeal, the Home Show, and Rotary Youth Leadership (RYLA) at Kelvin Heights, February is going to be busy and your support for these events will be welcomed.

Our program for the year is beginning to take shape so I trust that you will enjoy all that the club has to offer in 2020.

We will also hopefully be able to induct a new member early in February so this will be a great start to the year.

Welcome back
Take care

Ross
