Hello Everyone
Another fabulous few days of great weather - I trust you're all enjoying it as much as we are!
Two more busy weeks have just past and it’s nearly Christmas. Lee-Ann is busy looking at options for our Christmas function scheduled for 7 December - save the date.
I missed our first ‘Adopt a Plot’ event on Ben Lomond as I was in the North Island but, by all accounts, it was a great day had by all. There will be many more opportunities to take part in managing our plot and the removal of Wilding Pines.
Thank you all for your attendance at our recent AGM - much appreciated and I'm glad that one is done and dusted. (PPT Link)
Last week was a great Melbourne Cup event. A special thankyou to David Carter as it was superbly run and, by all accounts, a very successful fundraising effort for Foundation.
We are drawing closer to needing to reply to District on any issues with the proposed Constitution for our new District 9999. Our Secretary, David Tait, is collating our response.
I'm now away for the next 2 weeks working in the North Island but will be sure to return for a Foundation Dinner on 30 November.
At our AGM last week Chris Taylor was presented with his 4th Sapphire Pin to his Paul Harris Fellowship, by Steve Maclean on behalf of our club. Chris has recently stepped down from our Club Secretary role which he performed for 10 years. It is a role that requires a lot of focus and time. Chris previously transferred to our club 12 years ago from Dunedin East. Congratulations from us all Chris - well deserved!
We also welcomed and inducted Malcom Rees into our club. Malcolm has moved to Queenstown from Invercargill. Malcolm is seen here being welcomed by our President, Jason, and his brother Grant who will be our President in 2022/23.
The Melbourne Cup - off site meeting Tuesday 2nd November
Thanks to David Carter and his assistant, Past President Lee-Ann, a successful 2021 Melbourne Cup Rotary Foundation fundraising event was held at Stacks Pub at the Hilton.
Attended by 37 Rotarians, partners and invited guests including Inner Wheel, a fun few hours of betting, raffle ticket buying, food and drink was enjoyed by all. Over $1500 was raised.
Well done and a huge thanks to everyone involved and those who donated in lieu of attending, those who donated goods or an experience, as well as those who attended.
Our thanks to our sponsors - the Hilton for the use of Stacks Pub and vouchers, Mt Michael Wines, Fogo Brazilian Restaurant, Millbrook Resort, Pac n Save, The Boatshed Cafe, Tania Carter, Lee-Ann Lines, Hamish Murray and David Carter.
On Saturday 30 October, 15 Rotarians, partners and visiting Rotarians enjoyed a couple of hours up on Ben Lomond, high above Queenstown. It was about a 10 minute walk in, from the top of the gondola, to get to our plot and boy was it a great view from the office!
Our job on the plot is to keep the ‘wilding pines’ out. This will allow the natives and grasses to grow and thrive. We have linked with the ‘Wakatipu Wilding Conifer Control Group Inc’ (WCG) which is a community not-for-profit organisation created in April 2009. The group is focused on protecting biodiversity and the remarkable landscape of the Wakatipu for the benefit of residents, users, tourists and particularly future generations. The WCG aim is to control the wilding pine trees.
Native skinks are returning to the area which is great news.
Thanks to the Rotary members involved: Richard Bowman, Neil and Gillian Boniface, Lee-Ann Lines, Hamish Murray, Gabrielle Schou, David Tait, Alan Ward, Riki Hunter, John Thompson, Grant and Valma Rees, Chris Taylor, Ashley Adams, Kerry Dunlop, Ken Fox, and Scott Donaldson.
Many thanks also to visiting Rotarians, Peter and Donna Buxton, from the Balclutha Rotary Club.
We will be having another working bee hopefully before Christmas and again in February if anyone wants to join in.
An amazing buffet lunch was enjoyed afterwards at the Skyline Stratosphere Restaurant - ‘all you can eat’ and we certainly made the most of it and hoped that the gondola could handle us on our way down!
Foundation Dinners - 30th November ‘It's that time of year again’
... and it's just 3 weeks away. We are looking for at least another 4 Hosts please. If you haven't already spoken to Lee-Ann, Jason or Foundation Director Richard Bowman and you are keen to be a Host, please ask the other significant stakeholder in your household if it is ok and let one of the above know asap or reply to queenstownrotary@gmail.com. If not we may come shoulder tapping.
Foundation dinners are a fun night of friendship with great food, wine, and lots of laughs while we raise money for the Rotary Foundation.
Cost: We are mindful of the extra costs at this time of the year and that we have had a few other Rotary events lately, so the cost per person will remain the same as last year:
Hosts pay $30pp. Guests pay $45pp
Further Info:
There will be 6 guests at each event + the Hosts. (7-8 pax)
The hosts usually provide the main course, tea & coffee and any entertainment they wish to inflict, but it is up to the hosts how the evening is run and who brings what. It can be a planned set-course dinner, BBQ or a pot luck. Whatever takes your fancy.
It is up to the Host to decide on the date and time and can be before the 30th November, in December or even in January, if you all agree.
This event replaces the usual Rotary meeting on Tuesday 30 November at the Holiday Inn.
'Days for Girls' is an international project to help combat period poverty by providing reusable menstrual pads. Click on the link to be taken to the website for more info - https://www.daysforgirls.org/
Next working bee to be held on - Tuesday 16th November between 1 – 5pm. To be held in the smaller meeting/function room at the Queenstown Events Centre.Afternoon tea will be provided. We really hope you can make it. 😊
Please bring with you what you can. If you have – a sewing machine, an overlocker, Ironing Board and/or an Iron, Sharp scissors, Extension cord.
Please confirm if you can make it before November 5th to Lee-Ann Lines, ph 021 343 506, Days for Girls Coordinator.
Rotary International President Shekhar Mehta says that polio eradication can be achieved if Rotary members stay committed. He calls on every club to offer support this World Polio Day. Watch and share President Mehta’s World Polio Day video message.
IPP Lee-Ann is looking after the programme, duties, meetings and attendance. If you have any suggestions/ideas for the programme please let her know. If you have a duty and can’t attend, please make sure you find a replacement.
The 3 Minute Talk - to make sure we run to time, please keep to between 3-5 minutes, unless pre-arranged with President Jason.
Apologies - Must be received to queenstownrotary@gmail.com before 12pm Tuesday at the latest. Please be aware that you will be invoiced for your meal if no apology is received. If you are unsure if you can make it each week, you can put in a permanent apology and let us know when you do come. It is easier to inform the restaurant of an extra meal than the Club having to pay for meals not claimed.
