PRESIDENTS BLOG

One of the benefits of service clubs such as Rotary is that they directly - and indirectly - foster social capital.  The specific benefits that flow from social capital are trust, reciprocity, information and cooperation.  These benefits firstly and directly accrue to the members of the club, and arise from the frequent and ongoing connections between the members.  Harvard political scientist Robert Putnam jokingly suggests that communities who want to increase their social capital need to just  “... multiply their picnics”.

There are two types of social capital - bonding and bridging.  Bonding social capital refers to the social networks developed within homogenous groups - say a golf or a bridge club for example, or the hugely successful Queenstown Mountain Biking Club - whereas bridging social capital refers to social networks developed between heterogeneous groups - like a diverse Rotary Club for example where the members come from different professions and parts of society and contribute to the community in many different ways.  Bridging social capital is very important for community strength because it brings people together despite their diversity.

The challenge for service clubs in general, and Rotary Clubs in particular, is to recruit the next generation to which we can pass on our social capital - if we don’t replace ourselves, the social capital we have built up will dissipate, to the detriment of our community.

Hopefully our Friends of Rotary initiative will help create and propagate bonding social capital.  The question for us as Rotarians is what can we do to help create and maintain bridging social capital?

PAKURANGA ROTARY'S NZ TOUR 2018
Pakuranga Rotary Club is organising another New Zealand tour.  They currently have 3 couples from Australia and 2 couples from the USA (this includes 2 PDG’s).
They currently plan to be in Queenstown on Sunday 15 April and wonder whether our Club would repeat the ‘Home-hosting’ arrangement as we did last year.
If you are able to take part, please contact Monica or Kerry.

Rotary Youth Exchange
The Rotary Youth Exchange Committee of D9980 are looking for your assistance in making the next exchange year better than this year.

At PETs1last year, I indicated to the Presidents Elect that we had a need for Clubs to host inbound students from July 2018 and to identify students who could be outbound students in January 2019.  Assistant Governors were asked to help their Clubs to work through this process.  Now is the time to start this process.

We are looking for seven clubs to host students. This is an amazing opportunity to be involved in the "international' part of Rotary and to support the longest running Rotary programme within this District.  If your club has hosted in the past you will know how rewarding this programme can be for both the inbound student and the families and Rotary Club that host him or her.  If you haven't hosted for a number of years, then this year is a good year to start.

We are hoping that we will have all hosting clubs sorted before the end of March so that we can inform the inbound students early of their host clubs.  This is necessary so that they can arrange their student visas and confirm their travel arrangements.  Please make your commitment now.

We are also looking for candidates to be our outbound students in 2019.  We have advertised in schools in the past and will do so again this year, but we find that direct approaches work best.  This is an amazing opportunity for a student to immerse themselves in another culture and learn a new language with the support of Rotary.  There is no restriction [other than age - must be 15 to 18 yrs old] and Rotarian children and grandchildren can apply for exchange.  Can you please contact your local high school and advise them that the exchange is open for applications which close on 30 April 2018.

If you want to see what RYE means for inbound and outbound students, have a look at the D9980 February 2018 Newsletter.

Information on RYE can be found at our website - www.rotaryyouthexchange9980.wordpress.com

RYE is part of the youth focus of Rotary in D9980, which all Rotary Clubs support.  As an organisation it is part of our DNA - please make it part of yours.

Thanks for your support.

Combined Saturday Morning Walk
Queenstown Inner Wheel members have invited us and our partners to join with them on their Saturday Morning Walk on 3rd March.  It’s not challenging but will be from the area of the new Kawarau Bridge towards the Shotover River, ending up at "Franks Cafe" at the Ramada Hotel at approximately 11am for coffee or lunch or whatever takes your fancy, concluding with a walk back to the car another 10/20 minute walk after refreshments.
Parking at the Frankton Kindy/Church found at approximately 7 Robertson Street where there is considerable parking space there meeting at 9 30am.
Those who just want to join in at "Franks" for coffee/refreshments are very welcome.
The Kawarau River will be attractive to walk along side and viewing of some of the new development and should make an enjoyable and interesting morning.
Both Presidents have OK’d 'mingling' with the Brother/Sister Clubs so we are hoping for a good attendance from Inner Wheel as well as Rotary members.
Please contact Jenny 0274173161 or Monica 4413091 should you require any further information.
This is a time when if you are available and wish to take part then just roll up at the suggested parking area at 9.30am or at Franks at 11am.

We are sure that all who take part will have a very enjoyable and congenial morning.
