Happy New Year everyone!  I hope it has been a wonderful few weeks for you all, and you have found time to relax and enjoy some quality time with those who are precious and special in your life.

Last year, as a Club, we achieved quite a bit and it was fairly hectic at times.  I wish to sincerely thank you ALL for your support and involvement.  This Bulletin marks the halfway point and is the start of the final 22 weeks, or 156 days as your President, and I won’t be lifting my foot off the pedal so you will need to strap in and hold on for a bit longer!

And so, to kick things off, we were supposed to have a BBQ at Tucker Beach and enjoy a lovely summer (??) evening overlooking the river.  But the weather has other ideas so my BBQ organising committee Extraordinaires have come up with another plan which I am sure you will all agree will ensure that a beaut night will be had.  Keith and Kerry have been busy organising an indoor option and I am pleased to say we will be going to Buzz Café, Hansen’s Road, Frankton for pizzas (they now have a pizza oven).  The cost per head remains at $15 and we ask you to be there at 6pm.  RSVP’s are very important – by midday tomorrow (Monday) please so they can order in the right number of bases.

As usual for our Club at this time of the year, we are now embarking on a busy time of the year.  There is quite a bit coming up in the programme over January, February and March, so there will be notices “coming-out-your-ears'' over the next few weeks.  These events include-

RYLA:  Friday 29th January to Wednesday 3rd February.
  1. There is a volunteer’s roster sheet out now.
  2. A BBQ with the 'RYLArians' attendance sheet out now (for Sunday 31st)
  3. And the Gala Dinner Awards Event attendance sheet (2nd Feb).
If you are able to attend or volunteer at any of these events, please let Ross Beal know asap.

The Gala Awards Dinner Night is in lieu of a Club meeting as it is on a Tuesday and held at the Holiday Inn.  It would be really great if you can make it.  The night is run by the 'RYLArians', and it is really a fun and funny evening - they are in charge of the entertainment and will perform for you.  There is also an opportunity to put your vote in for the best ‘Community Project’ entry.  This is something they will have been working on all of their week and the public get to vote who did the best job.

BUNNINGS STORE OPENING FUNDRAISER:  Thursday 25th March to Friday 26th March.  We are exclusively running all the BBQ‘s for 6 various events, as a fundraiser.  The new store is expected to be ready and open for:
  1. A Tradies Event on Thursday 25th March.
  2. Employee Friends & Family only event on Saturday 27th March
  3. A ‘Soft Opening’ event on Monday 29th March
  4. The Grand Opening on Tuesday 30th March
  5. Easter Family Night on Thursday 1st April
  6. The Grand Opening Weekend on Friday 2 - Sunday 4th April
Ross will soon be asking for volunteers to form a small committee to ensure the events go smoothly.  This will be our major Club fundraiser for the year and replaces the lost opportunity we usually have at the NZ Golf Open.  If you want to be involved on the Committee or can give a few hours of your time cooking on the BBQ, please email Ross Beal and let him know.  He will be sending out an email in a few weeks and we will give you more info at the first in-restaurant meeting back at the Holiday Inn on 26th January.

On 9th February we are off site to visit the new Queenstown Fire Station.  Thank you to Keith for organising this.  Afterwards we will be going to a local restaurant in town for those to wish to do this.

Have you asked someone this week if they want to join Rotary?  You are the best advocate, so don’t keep our great Club and all the good work we do a secret.  Ask someone today.

See you on Tuesday at Buzz Cafe and then back at the Holiday Inn on 26th.  Take care everyone.

Yours in Rotary
President Lee-Ann

Take action and visit

2021 1ST MEETING - BUZZSTOP CAFE - 19 JANUARY

1st meeting for 2021 CHANGE OF VENUE - NOW BUZZSTOP CAFE, Hansen Road, Frankton, at 6 pm, for Pizzas.  Please send any apologies by Monday midday for catering purposes.  $15 per head to be paid to the Rotary bank account.

2020 CHRISTMAS FUNCTION
Originally scheduled for Waitiri Creek Winery, likely inclement weather on Sunday 6 December saw a change in venue to ‘Cargo at Gantley’s Pub & Café’ at Arthur’s Point.
Interested Rotarians participated in the scheduled wine tasting before lunch.
As part of this event:
  • Several Rotarians were recognised for their part in the ‘’Boulder Wall Project at Lakeland Christian Camp, Kelvin Heights which took place over several Saturday mornings led by Ricky Hunter.
  • New Rotarian Paul Stanfield was inducted into our club by PDG Derek Bulman (see Lee-Ann’s ‘lines’ above and photo below).
  • 2 women members of our Club were welcomed into ‘Impact 100’ by member Mary Thompson. Impact 100 is a womens’ charitable organisation whose members each contribute $1,000 annually to a selected local charity. Established in the USA, a local group was established in Queenstown last year. Lee-Ann Lines and Gabrielle Schouw were selected by our Club for membership, sponsored by Mary and one other anonymous Impact 100 member.

NEW MEMBER - PAUL STANFIELD
At the Christmas function we welcomed our newest member, Paul Stanfield.  Paul has been living in Queenstown for about 22 months.  He brought a section next door to David Broomfield and has built his home there.

Paul and his wife Kirsten have 2 children.  Their son Jack is at WHS and he is a bit of a gun skier, representing NZ and up until COVID19, was attending a ski academy in the USA.

At the moment, Kirsten and their daughter still live in Auckland due to their daughters schooling requirements.  So a wee bit of travelling back and forth goes on.

Paul’s business background started as a 17 year old working at Foodtown which started a career in supermarkets, working for Progressive Enterprises for quite a few years.  He later moved on to The Warehouse Group, as a buyer.
He has also built up 2 Export Businesses, beginning when he bought his father’s building and steel materials business, exporting to Asia and the Pacific.  He also went into food and meat trading with a business partner, mainly exporting NZ beef and lamb outside of the Pacific Rim.

His interests are skiing and golf, although he’s not had too much golf lately, due to shoulder surgery not too long ago.

Paul will be a valued member of our Club and brings a wealth of business experience and knowledge with many other interests.

Welcome Paul, we look forward to getting to know you Kirsten better.

VEOLIA VISIT - 1 DECEMBER 2020
On 1 December we visited Veolia where Jason Climo, our President Elect, is Regional Manager. A French based international company, Veolia is the ‘3 waters’ contactor to QLDC.

As well as learning about Veolia globally and its core values, we were shown robot/camera technology used for pipe inspections, technology used for relining existing pipe systems and the on-line monitoring of the water and wastewater sites within the Queenstown Lakes District.

An incredible learning experience for all, with exposure to fascinating technology, over 50 Rotarians and guests enjoyed this experience.

FEEHLEY HILL MAINTENANCE
Saturday morning 5 December saw a group of Rotarians, led by Tony Fleming, maintaining our assigned area of native plantings at Feehly Hill, Arrowtown.

DUTIES NOTICES
PDG Derek Bulman works hard to ensure you enjoy a varied and interesting programme each week.  He also is the one who allocates the Duties, and he asks that you please read the following information to ensure the meetings go smoothly.

Meet & Greet - this now includes the job of ‘meeting set-up’.  Please try and be at the venue by 5.20pm to ensure enough time to set up the meeting area which includes –
  • making sure the podium is in position and the microphone and stand is in position at the podium.  If you have time and know how, please also do a sound check.  If you don’t know or can’t do a sound check, let President Lee-Ann know.
  • Please check with the guest speaker if they have an AV presentation and ask if they need the big screen or TV set up.  If you DO know how to do it, please have it ready before the meeting starts.  If you DON’T know, you will need to ask a staff member to help.
  • Put the banner up, on the front of the podium
  • Put the sergeant hat and tray out on the head table.
The 3 Minute Talk or Toast to a Rotary Project/Club - Unless pre organised with Derek or Lee-Ann, this is to be strictly between 3-5 minutes.  No longer please.  If you want to make it longer than 3-5 minutes, please make these arrangements before the meeting starts.

Apologies - If you have a duty and can’t do it, you are responsible to organise a replacement.  If you do not put in a meeting apology, you will be invoiced for your meal.  If you are unsure, you can put in a permanent apology.  It is easier to inform the restaurant of an extra meal than the Club having to pay for meals not claimed.
