I trust that you have had a great Christmas and New Year and are refreshed and ready for the challenges of a New Year.
Can I take this opportunity to wish you each the best for 2025.  Trusting that all aspirations for the year will be achieved.

January has already seen Rotary in action.
The Camp Quality BBQ lunch was held at the Playground on Alan Reid Road near Arrowtown.
Most of these children are cancer sufferers and accompanied by some siblings and chaperones, meant we were catering for around 90.
Thanks to Keith for leading this along with Heather, Rosanna, Richard, Genny and Keith’s son Dean and Family for assisting with this worthwhile project.
The Rotary effort was really appreciated, and we have a Certificate to prove it.

The A&P Show at Lake Hayes last Saturday saw Rotary assisting with various volunteer tasks, including some traffic management of people and horses at an onsite intersection, and others at the main gate looking after buses, cars, and Park and Ride passengers,   Thanks to Hamish for leading this event, and the support of Lee-Ann, Ralph, Ross, Neil, Julie, Stuart, Sharon and Simon.
An email from Catherine Fallon, Partnership and Events Coordinator reiterates their gratitude for our support.    A donation to the Club is following.

The next events are the Opera in the Gardens on 9th February where some carparking duties are required.   Grant will be looking for 5 or 6 Volunteers for this event.
The NZ Golf Open later in February is under the leadership of Ashley and he will be seeking to mobilise the Members across a number of activities during the week.
Carparking and BBQ’s are the key items we need to deliver so please give Ashley you support where able.

The last week of January sees our up and coming young leaders participating in the RYLA camp at the Christian Youth Camp at Kelvin Heights.  Lee-Ann will have an excellent schedule for them again and we wish her well in this endeavour.  The Club is invited to attend a BBQ at the Camp on Tuesday January 28th and this will be our Rotary evening for that week.

Our Club is also supporting an Arrowtown student to the Canterbury RYLA event in Christchurch.   They have a younger age cohort (18-25) than the Queenstown event, and we felt this student would benefit from this opportunity.

Our opening Rotary night is Tuesday 21st January.
I look forward to seeing you at the Tuckers Track BBQ on Tuesday night around 5.30 pm.
The club BBQ’s will be there, bring your own food and drinks
Bring your own Sausages/ Steaks etc and the President with some help from a friend will be happy to cook them for you.  (Cook not Cremate)

Catch you Tuesday at the BBQ.

Look forward doing Rotary with you in 2025.

Cheers
Ross

DUTY ROSTER - 4TH OF FEBRUARY TO THE 11TH OF FEBRUARY

GUEST SPEAKER - PIETER BULLING

Our guest speaker on Tuesday the 6th of August was Pieter Bulling.

Pieter won gold in the team pursuit at the 2015 World Championships in France
and placed fourth at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Career Highlights and Development:

Pieter Bulling began his cycling journey in primary school through a school program at the velodrome in Invercargill.
Noticed by Laurie Twall for his talent, Twall encouraged Bulling’s parents to support his cycling.

Pieter balanced soccer and cycling but eventually focused solely on the velodrome and road cycling.
He competed in the under-13 nationals, earning several medals, which solidified his and his parents' commitment to the sport.  He progressed through the junior ranks, competing in his first
world championships in Italy. From there, he. chose to dedicate himself to cycling and set himself an ambitious goal to compete in the  Olympic Games and win gold for New Zealand.

Pieter struggled with missing out on a typical teenage life due to his rigorous training schedule. He briefly quit cycling, only to return with renewed dedication after realizing he missed the sport.

Joining the under-23 program with Cycling New Zealand, Bulling trained at the Cambridge High Performance Centre. He spent months in Europe, racing and earning the
necessary points to qualify for major competitions like the World Championships and Olympics.

Pieter's major acknowledgements are:

- Commonwealth Games:-  In 2014, he won a bronze medal in the team pursuit at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games.
- World Championships -: In 2015, Bulling was part of the New Zealand team that won their first-ever team pursuit world championship in Paris. This victory placed them under immense pressure to perform at the subsequent Olympics.
- Olympics: At the 2016 Rio Olympics, despite high expectations and rigorous preparation, the team narrowly missed out on a bronze medal, finishing just under a second behind the third-place team.

Pieter's challenges during his cycling career were team dynamics and the emotional toll of missing out on an Olympic medal after years of training.

After retiring in 2018, he found a new role as a jet boat driver for Shotover Jet in Queenstown. He compared this job to high-performance sports due to the adrenaline and pressure involved in ensuring passengers' safety.

His future career aspirations are to advance into management with Shotover Jet and focus on providing a good lift for his family.

He participates in mountain biking races annually and finds joy and motivation in setting and achieving fitness goals.

FOUNDATION DINNERS

In the meeting last week, Monica briefly discussed the Foundation Dinner lists and that the goal would be to raise $50 per member in August for the Foundation and another $50 per member in February for our club.

Fundraising is entirely up to your group whether it's a dinner, a picnic, or something more unconventional.

Most of the groups on the updated list are teams of four.

As discussed in the previous Bulletin, you may swap groups if you wish however, the person wanting to swap must find and negotiate with another member who has to agree to swap also.

Please keep Monica informed of any changes.

DUTY ROSTER FOR 27TH AUGUST/3RD SEPTEMBER

Please ensure orders are placed on time.
The orders are placed with the Holiday Inn on Monday morning.
PART TWO - CHANGEOVER DINNER
Part two of the Change Over took place on the 30th of July, 2024 at the Holiday Inn, Frankton.

We had a total of 32 people attend on the evening. This included Rotary Queenstown members and their partners, the current President of the Inner Wheel Queenstown Club ( Vivienne Hunt) and Jennie Herring (Rotary Foundation - Zone 8).

Grant Rees was a fantastic MC for the evening and acted as past President for the evening in Neil's absence.

President Handover -  Ross Beal

Grant Rees stood in as the past President and passed the chains to President-Elect, Ross Beal.

Ross Beal is the past President from 2019 to 2020. He decided to put up his hand for the role again to ensure the club had a president and some direction over the next 12 months.

If you missed the second change-over, here is a short summary from President Ross Beal.

And so, if I have a focus for the year ahead, I would have to say that my focus would be to ensure that you the members and partners of this Club are fully engaged, recognised and respected for the contributions that you make for the benefit of the Club and the local Community.

We as the members of the Rotary Club of Queenstown come together to do truly remarkable things, profound things and, in my opinion, audacious things because, as an organisation we have the capacity and capability to improve the lot of many organisations and folk who are part of our community.

Despite the importance of community, when it is all shaken down, what will always be important to me, is you the members of the Rotary Club of Queenstown, we are all in this together for a common purpose, it is not a contest.

My focus again this term will remain on the Club and not on the noise that circulates around us.

So, with respect to the year ahead let me know your views, consider where and how we each can contribute to adding value to the Club and how do we together as a Team continue to contribute into our community while remembering to have some fun while navigating the landscape ahead.

My only aspiration is to fulfil a task that is in line with your aspirations, because in my mind this is your club, not mine, therefore the year ahead should be your year, not mine.
Thank you for your confidence to reappoint me to this role, I trust your faith is rewarded.”

Ross was also featured in an article, published by the Otago Daily Times.

The president announced the directors for 2024-2025. Club Admin will be managed by Tim Wilshire, Neil Boniface (International), Treasurer (Hamish Murray), Secretary (David Tait), Club Activities (Nell Hunt), and Community (Grant Rees).

We had two Rotarian guest speakers on the evening. Vivienne Hunt and Jennie Herring.

Vivienne Hunt - Inner Wheel Queenstown

Vivienne is the current President of Inner Wheel Queenstown (2024 to 2025).

Inner Wheel Queenstown's major fundraiser is the  New Zealand Sotheby’s International Realty Queenstown Marathon. They provide volunteers to act as marshals for this annual event. To date, they have raised $20,000 which have donated to various charities in our region

They also collect for the Cancer Society's Daffodil Day, the Breast Cancer Foundation's Pink Ribbon Day, the Heart Foundation and a local hospice

Jennie Herring (Rotary Foundation) - Speaker for the Evening

Our speaker for the evening was Jennie Herring, from the Rotary Foundation (Zone 8).

Based in New Zealand, Jennie is well known throughout the Zone. She has held numerous positions at a district and national level, including District 9920 Governor (2015-16), Assistant Rotary Coordinator and District 9920 Foundation Chair.

She presented to the club, the role of the Rotary Foundation and Endowment Fund.

Currently, there are no changes to the Foundation Districts structure under the Regionalisation Pilot.

Jennie presented the opportunities and benefits of donating to The Rotary Foundation and how the funds contribute to key areas such as

  • Annual Fund
  • Endowment Fund
  • Polio Fund (currently 8 cases)
  • Disaster Fund.
  • If a disaster does occur, Clubs can apply and within hours are given funds to immediately assist the community e.g. Cyclone Gabrielle

Below are the current summary statistics for 2022 to 2023 and all-time contributions.

Rotary’s areas of focus are:
  • Providing clean water
  • Supporting education
  • Fighting disease
  • Supporting the environment
  • Saving mothers and children
  • Growing local economies
  • Promoting peace
Thank you Jennie for attending our changeover and presenting important information about the Foundation and its functions. smiley
