Russell's Ramblings

Firstly 2 apologies from our bulletin editor - ONE  for the delay in publishing this bulletin. Lee-Ann has experienced internet disruptions since last Friday. TWO for not updating the Roster and Speakers. Please refer to this bulletin for the correct info.

The Night of the AdEaters project that we have been hearing about for some time is now over.
The committee of Joan, Monica, Sheena, Greg, Olivia, Keith and myself, have been meeting since last year and weekly for at least the last six months and all combined have put a huge effort into the entire event. This of course was introduced to us by Joan and Monica during Monica’s year as President but with venue availability etc., the project has stemmed to the current Rotary Year. I would like to highly commend Monica and especially Joan for the time and effort they put into making the project a success. In Joan’s case I am very aware of her time which was well above any expectation of involvement by any member. I would hate to guess how many hours they spent on promoting the AdEaters to the Community in general and of course also to us.

I would also like to acknowledge the time and effort provided by our Friends of Rotary, Sheena Naughton and in particular, Greg and Olivia Wensley. Sheena, due to her HR Role and connections was able to recommend and work with many sources and, in the end whilst she was responsible for the Stage Events she also enjoyed looking after the Pop Corn Machine along with our 2019 Outbound Rotary Youth Exchange Students Ella and Leah. Greg and Olivia were tremendous as the young minds on the Committee and pointing us oldies in the right direction as far as IT communications and contacts were concerned.  Their little daughter Tilly also entertained us at many of the meetings. In the end I personally know that especially with Joan’s perseverance. Sheena’s involvement and Greg and Olivia’s contacts and recommendations there were no stones left unturned.

We also must thank the sponsors, especially the Rotarian Sponsors, David Broomfield, Ron Mackersy, Steve McLean and Joan and Monica. In addition to their monetary contributions, sponsorships in kind were provided by Media Works, The Rees Hotel, Ngai Tahu, Fluid, Queenstown Park Hotel, Van Ash Wines, Queenstown Lakes District Council, MacTodd Law, Event Finder and Whitestone Cheese.

However, unfortunately for some unknown reason we did not have the response from the public that we were expecting but at the same time were competing with another local event in Arrowtown and of course what became an exciting All Blacks / South African rugby game. I feel that the audiences who attended either the Saturday Night or Sunday Afternoon performances really enjoyed the entire programme and the additional food stalls that had been arranged.

It is obvious at this stage that due to the low attendance we won’t break even with this one which of course was expected to be a Major Fundraiser for Monica’s Year. However, on a positive note, we do hold the royalty rights for this programme throughout New Zealand for at least the next ten years, so with other promoters using a larger centre and a greater population base I’m sure that we will be able to recoup the loss through future royalties. In my mind I do not see this as being all Gloom and Doom. We know that from time to time we are going to have a project that falls over financially. On the other hand, when we sold some of the Skyline Shares a short time ago as our contribution towards the Tucker Beach Trail we made a very unexpected surplus. I personally, and as your President trust you all will commend both Joan and Monica for their introduction of The Night of the AdEaters to us as a completely different way of fundraising for our community and their time of perseverance during the entire preparation of the programme.   I believe it was great to try a different form of fundraising and we have all learned considerably from this event.

Finally, a big thanks also to the many of you who volunteered to assist setting up the Memorial Centre on Friday and assisting on Saturday and Sunday.  I trust that you all managed to see some parts of the programme whilst also attending to the necessary duties and enjoyed the show as I certainly did.

We have some more great projects coming along so let’s look forward to working with them and continue to enjoy our Rotary Fellowship.

Now onto our previous speakers -

Following the meeting 2 weeks ago when Fred van Brandenburg spoke to us on his architectural skills and visions and of course reference to the Arrowtown ‘Olive Leaf’ project, he has written to us expressing his thanks for us allowing him to explain what is a very emotive and hot topic in Arrowtown currently.
This week our 2019 Out bound Rotary Youth Exchange students Ella and Leah introduced themselves to the club. Ella and Leah are two outstanding and deserving young women who will be great ambassadors for our Club and NZ.

Now just a few dates for you to take note of:

On Tuesday 2nd October Hamish Walker MP will be our guest. This meeting will be held at Holiday Inn and will be a Partners Night. We have also invited the Inner Wheel members and their partners to join with us on that night.

Following Mike Henry’s address on Mental Health issues our Community Committee have agreed to arrange a Garden Tour with the proceeds going to the Queenstown Lakes Family Centre who assist with mental health problems in the Wakatipu Area. This will be on Sunday 14th October.

A Quail Rise / Tucker Beach Gala Day is planned for Sunday 28th October. This will coincide with the opening of the Tucker Beach Trail. Along with the opening formalities we will most likely be running our BBQ’s during the afternoon. More information on that one shortly.

During the last couple of years we have been involved with 20th Century Fox Film Premiers, 2016 ‘The Girl on a Train’ and last year ‘Murder on the Orient Express’. We are currently arranging the Film Premier of ‘The Bohemian Rhapsody’. This is planned for Wednesday 31st October and once again funds raised from this evening will go towards Polio Plus – End Polio Now.  We will most likely conclude the evening with a Pizza or similar dinner close by.  We are expecting to be able to fill the 100 seat theatre which would contribute approx. $1,000.00 towards the Polio Eradication Programme -  So start getting your party together now.

Now just a snippit from a news letter that I received recently. How many of you are Side-line Critics?
   SPORTSMANSHIP
At one point during a game, the coach called one of his 9 year old rugby players aside and asked, “Do you understand what co-operation is and what a team is?” “Yes coach” replied the little boy.
“Do you understand that what matters is whether we win or lose together as a team?” The little boy nodded in the affirmative.
“So” the coach continued, “I’m sure you know when the other side is awarded a penalty, you shouldn’t argue, curse or swear at the referee. Do you understand all that?” Again, the boy nodded in the affirmative. The coach continued, “And when I take you out of the game so that another boy gets a chance to play, it’s not a stupid decision, or that the coach is an ignorant idiot is it?” “No coach.”
‘Good’ said the coach. “Now go over there to the side-line and explain all that to your Grandmother!”

Have a great week

DG Andrew Hamilton Visit  4th September
It was great to meet and get to know our DG Andrew Hamilton last week and to hear his Rotary story. In 2005 Andrew was "dragged along" to a meeting at the Dunedin Central Rotary Club by a friend. At the time he thought it would be a great way to meet people and network. He is grateful to be part of the Rotary organisation and is a eager contributor to his Club.

By day, Andrew is a Chartered Accountant and has his own firm in Dunedin.  During his visit with us, Andrew certainly recieved the VIP treatment  and  was whisked out to Tuckers Beach for a thorough tour of our major project there.  He reported afterwards to the Board at a pre-dinner meeting that he was very impressed at the Clubs efforts on this project. He was also equally impressed and toasted our smaller projects and the individuals involved.

After  an enjoyable dinner at the Holiday Inn, Andrew spoke to those present about his goals during his year. He would also like to see Clubs work together to achieve greater things and also to socialise and get to know each better. A good start will be the Car Rally coming up on November 10th in Cromwell and he urged us all to go along for a day of fellowship and fun.
Guest Speaker Fred van Brandenburg 11 September

Fred, who was accompanied by his son Luca, gave a most interesting presentation with visual complements on some of their architectural work locally and around the world.

The biggest project is the HQ for a Chinese fashion label which Fred said "keeps on giving". It has been going for 12 years and looks to continue for 3 or 4 more. He said the building soar into the future which was a metaphor around the bird imaging. It illustrates how he gets his inspiration from nature. Models used to illustrate the plans are housed in Dunedin and visitors are encouraged to visit.

They then showed a concept for the Dunedin Harbour redevelopment starting with a bridge joining the city with the harbour and the mainstay being the University of Otago Marine Centre. Also included are commercial and residential buildings and an Arts centre.

Closer to home they talked about an apartment development on Frankton Road and 'The Leaf' proposed to be alongside St Patricks Church in Arrowtown. The latter seemingly a controversial plan for the Historic Precinct of the town.

They finished with a video of their presentation of the Chinese project's models in Venice. It ran for 6 months and 3000 people visited the exhibition.

Fred finished by talking about his inspiration from the works of Gaudi and his 9 visits there to study his works.

Rotary Events Coming Up.....

A District wide “Fun Day” is being organised for Saturday 10th November 2018. This will be a day when all Rotarians, and their families, in the District can get together, socialise and have a fun day out. There will be a Car rally involved, (an opportunity to raise funds for your club). We will all meet for lunch in Cromwell and enjoy some time at Highlands Park Raceway! This is being organised by the District Assistant Governors and should be a great day out. Further details will follow later, but in the meantime mark the date in your diaries!

Planning for the District Conference is well under way and we have had a steady stream of registrations. Just to remind you, the Conference is in Oamaru on April 26 – 28, 2019. There is a limit on the number of registrations we can take, so do not delay! If you have not already done so, appoint a Club member to be the conference co-ordinator and organise a group from your Club to attend what will be a fantastic weekend of catching up with old friends, making new friends, hearing some special speakers, along with the opportunity to be involved in a project.

Hosts Required for 2019 Inbound RYE Students
Every year presents an awesome opportunity for families to be a Host for a Rotary Youth Exchange Student. Not only do the students get to find out how to "live like a local" and experience our beautiful country but host families can learn about the students country and form a relationship which usually leads to strong ties and somewhere to go and visit in the future.

Queenstown Rotary Club is seeking expressions of interest for four Host families from July 2019. These families can be Rotarians, Friends of Rotary or from outside of Rotary.  If you think this is something you could be interested in, please contact President Russell or Ashley Adams for further information.
The International Marathon Fellowship of Rotarians

IMFR (The International Marathon Fellowship of Rotarians) was formed after a group of French Rotarians developed the idea of having at least 100 Rotarians competing in the Paris Marathon during Rotary’s Centennial year in 2005 and have since met annually. President Kester Baines (Rotary Club of Kardinia, Geelong, Victoria, Australia District 9780) decided that he would like to take this event to New Zealand in general and Queenstown in particular.

A travelling group of 31, their tour starts in Auckland on 3rd November and arrive in Queenstown via the West Coast on Thursday 15th November and will participate in the Air NZ Queenstown Marathon. From Queenstown they travel to Milford Sound and overnight on the Milford Mariner return to their native homes on Thursday 22nd November.

SO WHAT’S OUR PART IN THIS EVENT?

We are arranging a Pasta Night for them on Friday 19th November at Wild Thyme and on Saturday 20th November a Dinner for them, most likely at Copthorne Lakeside where they are staying. Both nights will of course be open for our club members and partners so that we can offer the hand of friendship and hospitality and make sure that their stay in Queenstown becomes a very memorable one for them. I believe that this is a great opportunity for us to ‘Show Case’ Queenstown and Queenstown Rotary and at the same time experience another International Rotary Event, on this occasion in our own back yard.

Please note your diaries accordingly and I trust that I have your full co-operation to making this one timer for Queenstown a great success.
Go to www.rotarianrun.org for further information.
