Well Queenstown Rotary has certainly hit the year and the ground running and ‘Leadership’ appears to be the theme this month.

To that end I acknowledge the leadership displayed by many of our club members this month.

Kerry, for leading the induction of a new member, Russell for standing in for me last week, Ashley for leading the fundraising endeavours with the N.Z. Golf Open as a priority, Bruce and Pat for leading the Home Show activity, Keith and Heather for leading the Bulletin production, Lee-Ann for leading the RYLA endeavour, Darren for your cultural leadership, and I know that there are many others taking a leadership role which is why the Rotary Club of Queenstown is outstanding.

We had the privilege of inducting new Rotarian Marc Holtzman into the Queenstown Rotary Club on February 4th and we were also privileged to hear Carrie Morgridge, Vice-President of the Morgridge Family Foundation from the USA, present on the role that Carrie and husband John play in their philanthropic support of numerous organisations through their plan for giving.

Carrie issued copies of her book, “Every Gift Matters”, to the members and partners in attendance.  It was also appropriate that Carrie was present to participate in this induction as Carrie and Marc have worked together on projects in the States.  Marc along with Kristen - welcome to Queenstown Rotary.

A big day for Pres. Elect Lee-Ann as many months of organisation came to fruition at the weekend with the commencement of the 2020 Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA) camp at Kelvin Heights.  28 young aspiring enthusiastic leaders were welcomed to the camp to begin an intensive 5 days of activities focused on leadership development.  A fine group of young people who will have their leadership skills honed and will be personally challenged as a result of this camp.  Queenstown Rotary Club is delighted to be the Host Club for this event.

Rotarian Darren Rewi led the Opening Ceremony with a Karakia and Nga mihi mahana followed by a welcome by the writer as President on behalf of the Host Club.  Well done to Lee-Ann - without her selfless devotion to this task, I suspect that RYLA would have struggled.  Thank you to all of the club members who have so willingly committed their time and talents to support Lee-Ann and the RYLA camp during this week.

The Queenstown Home Show, (Bruce and Pat Jefford) along with the N.Z. Golf Open (Ashley Adams) form a significant part of our community and fundraising activity over the balance of the month.  Thanks to those who have volunteered to support the events above, and if you have not yet committed and can, please advise Bruce or Pat or Ashley of your availability.

While focussing on leadership this week with RYLA, the following characteristics of good leadership formed a part of the presentation by President Ross at the opening of RYLA:

The best leaders don’t shout, but they do communicate
The best leaders don’t stand above their people, but alongside them
The best leaders don’t make waves, but they do make ripples throughout an organisation.
The best leaders don’t always talk, but they always listen.
The best leaders don’t know everything, but they try to know everyone.
The best leaders don’t guess, but they do plan.
The best leaders don’t react to every little thing, but they focus on the important things.
The best leaders don’t stand still, but they are prepared to challenge the status quo.
The best leaders don’t hide, but are visible and accessible.
The best leaders don’t carry a burden, but they do carry the culture.
The best leaders don’t treat their mistakes as embarrassing errors, but as enriching lessons.
The best leaders don’t know all the answers, but they do know all the questions.
The best leaders don’t humiliate, but they do empower and encourage.
The best leaders don’t make a noise, but they do make a difference.

Keep up the good work team - it is a pleasure and a privilege working with you.

I apologise for being absent next week as I have meetings in Wellington on Monday and Tuesday.  However Past President Keith is going to re-hone his skills and chair the meeting on that occasion.

Nga mihi
Ross

MARC HOLTZMAN'S INDUCTION

On Tuesday 4 February Marc Holtzman was inducted into Queenstown Rotary Club by past District Governor Kerry Dunlop.  We welcome Marc to the Queenstown Rotary Club.

SPEAKER 4 February - CARRIE MORGRIDGE

John and Carrie Morgridge serve as the President and Vice President of The Morgridge Family Foundation (MFF).  MFF invests in leaders and organisations that reimagine solutions to some of today’s greatest challenges.

Over the past decade, MFF has empowered educators to tackle the most challenging school conditions through their investment in mindSpark Learning.  Additionally, John and Carrie created Student Support Foundation, a national organization inspiring youth philanthropy.

Carrie speaks internationally on education advocacy, poverty alleviation, and philanthropy.  She is the award-winning author of Every Gift Matters and The Spirit of the Trail.

As avid athletes, John and Carrie biked the Great Divide, a 2,774 mile trail from Canada to Mexico. They split their time between Montana, Colorado and Florida.
Additional facts:
  • The MFF has given away over 115 million dollars since 2008
  • Carrie has completed 10 iron man competitions
  • Carrie has volunteered over 10,000 hours
  • She abides by 4 pillars when giving:
    • time and patience to choose where the gift will enable activities that lead to outputs, outcomes and finally impact
    • network and community, advocates linkedin
    • fail forward but finish
    • compounded results
Carrie introduced the rotary to Wendy Stihl - Impact 100 in which 100 women give $1000 each to be able to provide a $100,000 transformational gift.  Carrie is a member of all 60 chapters.  A new one is being set up in Queenstown.

Carrie has also partnered with educators who have developed problem based learning in schools.  Industry issues are taken to schools to solve and provided a budget to do so.

Carrie loves her outdoors, but she cares about environment as well, and on a personal note each day when at home walk along the beach and on the way home picks up any rubbish that is around.

Carrie is an author of two books and kindly provided 30 copies of her book to the Queenstown Rotary Club "Every Gift Matters - How your passion can change the world"

SPEAKER 28 January - JORDYN CLARK

28 January’s speaker was Jordyn Clark, the 2018 winner of the Rotary Diligence Award at Wakatipu High School. Jordyn has completed Year 1 of a medical degree at the Auckland Medical School which our $2500 prize assisted him to complete.

Jordyn was so grateful for the Rotary prize that he asked PP Russell if he could come back and present to the club with his thanks.

Jordyn’s presentation was both informative and humourous as he spoke about his experiences in his first year of university study.
