The attendance at Rotary over the last few weeks has been fantastic and it is great to see the number of Rotarians and partners in attendance at our meetings.  I guess that we have all struggled with the isolation and everybody is now taking the opportunity to reclaim their freedom to get out of the house.  The average attendance over the last 3 weeks has been 35.

It is good to be able to gather together again without restrictions.

Last Tuesday’s Rotary Meeting

We were privileged to hear from Josie Spillane, CEO Highlands Raceway at Cromwell.  She provided us with an insight into the joys and challenges of having the responsibility to oversee the operations of the Highlands Park.  Josie gave us an insight into her drive and determination that was established in her early career, including a job application that came with an ultimatum  “if you do not appoint me I will leave” and so, with regret at 21 years of age, looking for a new employment opportunity was a challenge.  I suspect that set the standard for the future and positioned her well to be able to be taking a lead role working for Tony Quinn.

Josie spoke of her long standing relationship with Rotary, and as part of her role with Cure Kids, speaking at every Rotary Club in District 9980.  She was also a part of a Rotary GSE exchange to Denmark and Lithuania.

She has oversight of a World Class facility right on our doorstep at Cromwell. We are so fortunate to have access to facilities such as this.  So maybe one day we will be able to coordinate a Rotary meeting at the Highlands Park Raceway and enjoy the many offerings that this world class facility provides.

Hanna:  departed Queenstown for Auckland, Doha and Stockholm on Friday 12th following her RYE here in NZ.  As the picture attests Hanna arrived home in Stockholm on Monday 15th (NZ time) to be welcomed by her delightful family.  Thank you to Nils and Carola for sharing Hanna with us for the year, it has been an honour and a privilege.

So we wish Hanna and her family all the best and we trust she settles in again to Swedish life. We wish her the best for the future in whatever endeavour that she decides to pursue.  We hope that one day we will meet again.

One of the disadvantages of an exchange student returning home is now realised, as the average age of the Rotary Club has gone back up.   Kia Kaha Kia Maia Hanna

The Importance of walking
Walking can add minutes to your life.
This enables you at 85 years old
To spend an additional 5 months in a nursing
home at $6,000 per month.

Changeover Night:
Next Tuesday 23 June  is our annual ‘Changeover Night’.  Along with Incoming President Lee-Ann, I am looking forward to seeing you all in attendance for this event.

Please advise your attendance, any guests, and apologies if possible by 4.00pm Monday by email to the club address attached  queenstownrotary@gmail.com   This is important for catering purposes with the Holiday Inn.  Thank you very much.

Changeover Night will be a night of celebration.  Along with an opportunity to socialise with our partners and guests, we will in addition be inducting a new member, awarding the Pauline Haslemore Trophy, acknowledging the year past and introducing incoming Lee-Ann as she embarks on her year as President of the Rotary Club of Queenstown.

There will be a 2 course dinner, a cheeky red and white wine on the tables, along with fruit juice and tea and coffee.
Cost per person for this event will be $45.00.

My grandpa started walking
Five miles a day when he was 60.
Now he's 97 years old
And we have no idea where the hell he is.

My Thanks:
This is my last Bulletin, and this week signals the end of my term as your Club President.  In my address to the Club at last year’s changeover I stated the following:

When it is all shaken down what will always be important to me is you the members of the Rotary Club of Queenstown.  My only aspiration is to fulfill a task that is in line with your aspirations, because in my mind this is your club, not mine, therefore the year ahead should be your year, not mine.

So with respect to the year ahead let me know your views, how can we be united in the notion of adding value to this club, what is your role in supporting me to add value, how do we change the fortunes of this club, and let’s remember to have some fun while navigating the landscape ahead of us this year.

Beyond that I simply seek your support and understanding that I do not wish to be carrying the burden of this Club’s future on my own.  Thank you for your confidence to elect me to this role, I trust your faith in me is rewarded.

So here we are a year later, and in summary, am I entitled to say job done.  The Rotary Club of Queenstown has done some good stuff in fulfilling those aspirations, we have added value to the Club, we have grown the membership of the Club, we have certainly had some fun as a Club, and to that end can I say I have certainly enjoyed the opportunity.  We have navigated the landscape including dealing with a global pandemic that impacted each of you at some level, along with the Club as a whole.  You have provided me the support and as such ensured that we have all accepted the challenge and we have collectively carried the burden of ensuring this Club’s future.

So as I sign out, thank you to each of you for the support that you have given me. Your support has been very evident and I will remain extremely appreciative for this.  I do need to acknowledge my Board and thank each one of you for the commitment and contributions you have made to ensuring that this year has been a success.

So to that end on Tuesday night I will hand over the baton to a new President and so take this opportunity to wish President Lee-Ann and her team the best for the year ahead.  I can now join the ranks of the Past Presidents comforted in the knowledge that there is nothing more past than a Past President.

So without the workload of Rotary, I can only imagine that this may well be my view of the World.  Yea  !!!

Take care, stay safe, and as always let us know if there is any support required during the week, we are as always only too willing to assist.

See you all on Tuesday night.
Kia kaha.
nga mihi mahana
Ross

LOCKDOWN WITH THE BEARS BOOK
The Bear Book

As Bob Dylan once sang…”The times, they are a changing”, and they certainly did as New Zealand went from level 2 on 21st March to Level 4, just 4 days later.

Down came Amanda’s Bears from the attic and for the next 42 days, I wrote a daily story and set up a display connected to each story.  Locals in Quail Rise visited the display site and people around the world followed the Bear’s adventures on a couple of Facebook pages.  While people posted how much they appreciated this small effort, I got so much pleasure seeing the young and not so young people visit the displays daily.

A big “thank you” to all those that helped keep my energy levels up and also those that brought jet skies, miniature planes, motor bikes, bee hives or lent me their favourite cuddly animals to add to  the displays…we were all in this together and you are acknowledged in the book.

Oh, the Book!  Yes.  Early on, I was asked to write a book and so here we are.  Cure Kids came on-board and will receive profits from the book sales.  They are a very special charity that funds vital medical research to help improve, extend and save the lives of kids.

Enough from me, please promote this book among your friends and family and thanks in advance for your support.

Stay healthy, safe and positive.
John
