We have enjoyed an excellent selection of speakers over the last few weeks.

It is always a good night when our inbound Rotary Exchange Student has the speaking slot and we were not disappointed. Hanna presented a snapshot of, her family, her life story and her home country of Sweden to us. We enjoyed listening to her and viewing the slides that she presented - well done Hanna.
Thanks to the members for your support of Hanna when the hat was passed around in support of her.

Steve Jones from Fire and Emergency N.Z. presented his life through the lens of his career.  A challenging pathway to earn a living I have to say. In addition he also spoke in sombre terms of the impending seismic event that is reliably predicted to strike down the Alpine Fault – the pending ‘AF8’ earthquake.  Nothing like a stirring discussion on impending doom to unsettle your sleep patterns. Thanks to Steve for this insightful review of this potential event and the preparation that we should individually take in preparation.

Colin Macnicol tells us that he will be alright as he has robust water supply and a generator. I can just about get a cable and a pipe to your house from mine, so if caught short, thanks Colin.!!!!

Honorary Rotarian and District Mayor Jim Boult spoke to us about life as our Mayor, the initiatives for the town that are in play, and generally what keeps him awake at night. Amongst these are nocturnal issues - large rats that require deadly and terminal force along with his laundry wall to extinguish. A good presentation, and thanks to Mayor Jim for giving us his time.  Also thanks to Mayor Jim who assisted Hanna to leap off a bridge.

Thanks to the members who supported Hanna when the hat was passed around (for a Bungy Jump).  Thanks to the generosity of the Mayor, the funds will now be available to her when she joins the other exchange students on their internal South Island tour.

Our very own Kerry Dunlop (good to see you back and on the mend) finally made it to the podium to give us his perspective of the Great Wall of China. Kerry travelled to China in support of the kids that are supported by the ‘Make a Wish Foundation’.  An excellent presentation and insight into the history and the experience of the Great Wall of China through Kerry’s eyes.  Sharon Burns from the ‘Make a Wish Foundation’ was Kerry’s guest for the evening.

On 14 September a party of 13, representing the Rotary Club of Queenstown glammed up and, looking very presentable, attended the ‘Spirit of the Wakatipu’ Gala & Awards Dinner at the Queenstown Event Centre.  Our club was delighted to be recognised for our significant contribution to the life of our community by being selected as a finalist in the ‘Spirit of the Community’ category.

The ‘Generation Give’ team of young aspiring leaders also acknowledged the work of our Queenstown Rotary Club Youth Committee by presenting a cheque to the value of $2,000.00 to Youth Director Lee-Ann.  The Hugo Charitable Trust then matched their donation which meant that we received $4,000.00.  This was an excellent evening and it is always nice to know that the generosity of you, the members, is appreciated and recognised by the community that we so willingly serve.  Well done Queenstown Rotary.

Apologies in advance as I will not be at Rotary on Tuesday night.  Rosanna and I will be at an event in Hong Kong.  I have never been there before, however I understand that the experience could be a riot.

See you on our return - take care.
Ross
KERRY DUNLOP - ROLE OF ROTARY DISTRICTS
Here is PDG Kerry Dunlop's response to President Ross' 'Opinion' last Bulletin.

TUCKER BEACH TRAIL MAINTENANCE

This last Saturday morning saw some Rotarians and helpers planting and transplanting shrubs and trees on our Tucker's Beach Trail. Some are seen here working, some are giving and receiving instructions.

GUEST SPEAKER - JIM BOULT

Honorary Member and Mayor, Jim Boult, addressing Rotary last week where he updated us on Council achievements over the last 3 years as well as the work and challenges that lay ahead for the returning and incoming Councillors.  Jim is also seen with our Rotary Youth Exchange (RYE) student Hannah Bergea Nygren from Sweden.

SPIRIT OF THE WAKATIPU AWARDS
The Spirit of the Wakatipu Awards were celebrated on Saturday 12 September.

Members of our representative team attending the Wakatipu Community Foundation  'Spirit of the Wakatipu' Awards last weekend where we were one of three finalists for the 'Spirit of the Community' Award. We were unsuccessful, the winner being the Arrowtown Autumn Festival. We were successful in our application to the  'Generation Give' youth section of the Foundation for funding for Queenstown Rotary 2019/20 youth projects.  Photos help capture the awesome setting at the Queenstown Events Centre and Lee-Ann Lines, our Youth Director, receiving the $2,000 award cheque from 'Generation Give'.

It is the intention of the Club to match the original $2,000 grant awarded to our Club by 'Generation Give' plus add $500. This and a matching $2,000 grant from the Hugo Foundation, announced on the night, will bring the total to $6,500 which enables the Club to sponsor 2-3 deserving Wakatipu High School students to 'Outward Bound' and/or the 'Spirit of Adventure' courses.  These courses have a proven track record of producing outstanding future leaders.

Being a successful recipient of this grant is a fantastic result for our Club and will further strengthen our relationship with the younger members of this wonderful community that we call home and serve.

SPEAKER - KERRY DUNLOP
Kerry Dunlop (member of Queenstown Rotary) spoke to us about his trip to China and walk along the Great Wall.  This was arranged with a group to raise money for the 'Make a Wish' charity which provides "wishes come true" for seriously ill children.  The group walked along different sections of the wall over five days and, looking at Kerry's photos, there was seldom any flat going with many steps to be climbed.  Kerry also gave us an idea of the history and geography ofthe wall.
Kerry raised $5,000.00 for the group from personal donations and the group raised $50,000.00 for the charity.

ROTARY ACCESS TO CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

President Ross has negotiated an agreement with the Queenstown Chamber of Commerce that extends the Club’s membership of the chamber to all of our members at no additional cost to us as individuals.

Members of the Rotary Club of Queenstown now have access to all Chamber of Commerce functions as Chamber members and the membership cost is included in our current Rotary Club subscription.

Where an event or training seminar includes a cost to all attendees, Rotarians will be charged the same as Chamber members.  This also extends to include staff of members.

It is hoped that Rotarians will take advantage of this opportunity to attend Chamber functions of their interest.

The Chamber logo will now appear on all Bulletins same as is afforded our 'Club Runner' sponsors.
