“The average man doesn’t wish to be told that it is a bull or bear market. What he desires is to be told specifically  which particular stock to buy or sell. He wants to get something for nothing. He does not wish to work. He doesn’t even wish to have to think.” — Jesse Livermore

     PRESIDENT'S BLOG
Those who attended Rotary two weeks ago and heard Peter Newport speak about his career in journalism, some of his notable experiences and his view of the future of news media would have been very impressed. Thanks again to our speakers team, Brian McPherson and Geoff Swan who continue to provide us with high calibre speakers.

This week saw a break from Wild Thyme Restaurant to the New Orleans at Arrowtown. A nice less formal meeting and satisfying to hear from two St Joseph’s year 8 (Form 2) pupils who were inspired by their attendance at the national Young Leader’s Day recently in Dunedin. We co-sponsored their attendance along with ’Lions’.

Our Foundation Dinners will be held on Tuesday 22nd November (in 3 weeks time). Kerry Dunlop will lead the organising of this annual event. We commenced organising this initiative at Rotary on Tuesday night. I encourage you to support this Foundation fundraiser including as a host. These dinners have been well received in previous years and assist us make our annual commitment to the Foundation which, of course, is celebrating its 100th year.

Last night the Membership Team met to begin planning for the future of Queenstown Rotary, including recruitment. If you wish to play a key part in organising and delivering this initiative in the New Year, please approach Monica, Joan, George or myself. It is imperative that we recruit new members into both groups of our club if we are to achieve succession planning that will enable Rotary Queenstown to continue long into the future.

Regards
President Keith

              Thanks from Pauline Blomfield

I would like to thank you and everyone at Queenstown Rotary for your kind and generous support with our children's dog safety campaign.

Dog bites are a preventable tragedy and with the holiday season fast approaching bite statistics always increase. Together we can make a difference.

I look forward to meeting you in the New Year.

Kind Regards

Pauline

We can plan for a return visit from D9980 to their District to commence mid August 2017.    This is an invitation for Rotarians and their Partners of D9980 to be part of this Rotary Friendship Exchange.  District Friendship Exchange organiser is very scant on details but those interested should send him an email registering it with their contact details lance.wensley@gmail.com  In due course this invitation will be included in the DG’s Newsletter. Places will fill fast. Read about Swedish District 2400 here

                     Dinner for Aussies
The Pakuranga Rotary Club has planned a 2 week tour of New Zealand specifically for Australian Rotarians (and partners) and wish to give them the opportunity to meet with NZ Rotarians on a more personal level than attending a Rotary meeting. They would like to be ‘home hosted’ for a dinner in a Rotarian's home on Sunday night the 9th April.

There will be about 30 people (plus or minus) and the concept proposed it that each host takes 4 guests each (6 if they have room) from the hotel (around 5.30 or 6.00pm) and gives them a meal and returns them say about 9.30 – 10pm. They offer this as a potential Club fundraiser for us as they will pay $50 per head to the Club.

Please let President Keith know ASAP if you might be interested in helping out.
OAR or BED?  Club Development Workshop
                                                                     By MONICA MULHOLLAND
PDG Joan, PE Monica and DG Janice at the Club Development Workshop

Joan and I spent the weekend in Dunedin at a Club Development Workshop.
My 3 take aways from the weekend were:

1. The club naturally divides into two types of people: those on the oars rowing it forward and those in bed doing not much.

This is the OAR BED Principle.

OAR stands for:

Ownership of the problems

Accountability – willing to take accountability for the problems

Responsible – prepared to be responsible for doing their bit to solve the problems.

These are called above-the-line traits

Below the line traits are the BED traits:

Blame – blame others for the problems

Excuse – make excuses why they cannot help solve the problems

Denial – that there really is a problem.

Which role do you play in the club? We need lots of people with their hands on the oars if

we are to survive and grow..
