THIS WEEK - "THE EDITOR'S BLOG"

Our President is very busy leading RYLA at the Lakeland Christian Camp this week so I will do my best to fill the gap.  It is a fair while since I put a blog together so please bear with me.  RYLA occupies a fair bit of this bulletin and rightly so - a large number of our members have been involved in supporting duties and activities be it helping serve meals and clean up, provide presentations to the 35 strong group of 'RYLAians', or helping with the tree planting last Saturday.  A number of us attended the BBQ last night and were welcomed and looked after by the notably hospitable participants.

The 2021 year is off to a busy start.  First night back we had pizzas at the 'Buzzstop Cafe' after inclement weather forced a change of venue and fare from the planned BBQ on our Tucker's Beach Trail.  Full credit to Rosie and Nick for hosting us at such short notice and top marks to Kerry Dunlop for his accurate weather predicting.

During this evening Gareth Harcombe, receiver of the 2019 Rotary Award for "Diligence & Commitment in Year 13" at Wakatipu High School, acknowledged Queenstown Rotary for helping with his study fees ($2,500).  Gareth is studying Maths & Computer Sciences at Canterbury University.

Last week saw us back at Holiday Inn where Scott Donaldson provided an impromptu lawyers update on changes to the Trust Act 2019.  His advice to us - talk to our family lawyer regarding the changes.  Cora Huitt compared Rotary in the USA with NZ whilst husband Jim spoke about international 'matching' grants through the Rotary Foundation.  He spoke in particular about the 'African Promise' where their Club in Virginia combined with the Limbe Club in Malawi in an international project to arrest the high incidence of cervical cancer among women in Malawi.  The outcome - a significant reduction through education and medical intervention.  This is an example of the 'international' work that Rotary is involved in.

This week the focus is on RYLA, District 9980's Youth Leadership program, again being held at the Lakeland Christian Camp and led by our President Lee-Ann.  See below for photos of activities up until last night (Sunday).

Ahead of us are a number of 'Bunnings Opening BBQ's'.  A committee has been set up to facilitate these led by PP Ross Beal.  These BBQ's will fill the gap left by the NZ Open that was cancelled this year.  More about these later.

DUTIES NOTICES
PDG Derek Bulman works hard to ensure you enjoy a varied and interesting programme each week.  He also is the one who allocates the Duties, and he asks that you please read the following information to ensure the meetings go smoothly.

Meet & Greet - this now includes the job of ‘meeting set-up’.  Please try and be at the venue by 5.20pm to ensure enough time to set up the meeting area which includes –
  • making sure the podium is in position and the microphone and stand is in position at the podium.  If you have time and know how, please also do a sound check.  If you don’t know or can’t do a sound check, let President Lee-Ann know.
  • Please check with the guest speaker if they have an AV presentation and ask if they need the big screen or TV set up.  If you DO know how to do it, please have it ready before the meeting starts.  If you DON’T know, you will need to ask a staff member to help.
  • Put the banner up, on the front of the podium
  • Put the sergeant hat and tray out on the head table.
The 3 Minute Talk or Toast to a Rotary Project/Club - Unless pre organised with Derek or Lee-Ann, this is to be strictly between 3-5 minutes.  No longer please.  If you want to make it longer than 3-5 minutes, please make these arrangements before the meeting starts.

Apologies - If you have a duty and can’t do it, you are responsible to organise a replacement.  If you do not put in a meeting apology, you will be invoiced for your meal.  If you are unsure, you can put in a permanent apology.  It is easier to inform the restaurant of an extra meal than the Club having to pay for meals not claimed.
