President's Update
I attended the ‘Relay for Life’ event last weekend where the local community raised $75k for the Cancer Society. Cancer affects one in four families and its rewarding to witness the community coming together to raise awareness of cancer and to help the Cancer Society provide its services helping families cope with this disease.
Remember to register for the Club's 80th birthday celebration on April 13th.
Rotaract Central Lakes is official with their Charter presented to Jess last week. We wish the Club a bright future and will be on hand to assist wherever needed.
Thank you to Gabrielle for leading last week’s meeting.
The Rotaract Club of Central Lakes was formally chartered on 14 March 2024.
12 of the 17 signed up members were inducted and their executive officers were sworn in to office.
Their foundation Directors are:
President - Jess Pauling (Queenstown)
Secretary - Roselle O’Brien (Queenstown)
Treasurer - Adam Stobo-Wright (Cromwell)
Held at the Holiday Inn in Frankton Road, the event was well supported by Rotarians from the supporting Clubs - Queenstown, Wanaka, Alexandra and Cromwell. District 9999 representatives also attended, notably District Governor-Elect Dave McKissock of Invercargill.
The Directors are now working on their calendar and will be contacting Clubs to arrange a meeting visit. They will offer to help with club projects and fundraisers as well as establishing their direction and projects of their own.
Guest Speaker – Daniel Cooper from Liger Leadership Academy
Last week we had the opportunity to learn more about the Liger Leadership Academy from Daniel Cooper and two of their keen students who study at the school (Bela and Kuratea).
The Liger leadership academy was founded in Cambodia in 2012 and opened its first academy in Queenstown, New Zealand, in 2022. The academy currently has 47 students with 50% being New Zealand and 50% being international.
The Liger Institute's commitment to training entrepreneurs and fostering a small yet powerful educational environment is truly commendable. It's inspiring to see an institution rooted in the pursuit of knowledge and growth, regardless of its size or origin. Their approach of reaching out to community experts and utilizing resources like vans for outreach underscores their dedication to holistic education and community involvement.
Students studying at the school get the opportunity to tackle local, national or global problems as well as learning in a real-world context by interacting with experts and organisations globally at least 25% of the time.
Their insights into the future of work, especially considering the rapid pace of change, serve as invaluable guidance for us all as we navigate the complexities of tomorrow.
