I cannot thank you all enough for your support of the last few weeks.  I have asked a lot of you and you have stood by me and supported all the crazy things I have asked of you.  But look at what we have done and what has been achieved.

The Foundation Auction & Dinner Fundraiser was a total success.  130 locals and Rotarians came together at an event that was not even a glimmer in my eye 3½ weeks earlier.  Enter Karen Spires and Joan Kiernan, a quick phone call to my old pal Peter Hillary, and we suddenly had an event that half the town was talking about and wanted to be at!!  Tickets were a valuable commodity, so we phoned the Sherwood for more, they were literally gone before we put the phone down!

The food was amazing and speakers Peter Hillary and local SAR pilot Jason Laing were a major drawcard.  Thankfully we had help from RYLArians, Joanne Skuse, Divesh Singh and Cass Harvey who provided invaluable support to make it run smoothly and allow Joan, Karen and myself to enjoy it a little.  The majority of the Silent and Live Auction lots sold above value or reserve and the raffles were really popular, especially for Mary Thompson who won her own Raffle!  She did agree to a redraw and someone else got to enjoy the cheeky little Merlot from John's own cellar that was included in the hamper.

A big thanks to everyone who attended and who participated in the auctions.  All this added up and contributed to the overall (net) total amount of $21,082.00 raised.  WELL DONE EVERYONE!!  I am very happy and proud of our club.

The Bunnings BBQs on the other hand was the ‘quiet achiever’.  Apart from the last 2 days when the weather turned cold and wet, the other days were great fun and an opportunity for fellowship and getting to know the newer members.  We had to sell a bloody lot of sausages to raise what we did, $3,194.00 and so, on that note, thanks to Ross and to those hardy souls who turned up and especially to those who chopped the onions!

I am pleased to welcome back Brian and Kerry Dunstan who have been stuck for the past year in Perth due the closed borders.  Once the bubble was created, they jumped on one of the first planes outta there!  Welcome back guys!

But sadly, on the other hand, this week we farewell Jim and Cora Huitt for a few months as they head back to their second home (NZ being the first!!) the United States to catch up on their affairs, family and friends.  They are hoping to return by October/November all going well.  We wish them a safe trip and may they keep well and return as soon as possible.
I don’t have much time left as your President and maybe you are looking forward to seeing the tail-end of me!  I am looking forward to a quieter few weeks ahead, but I may have a few things left up my sleeve before I go, so try and hang on in there for another 44 days!
Have you asked someone this week if they want to join Rotary?  You are the best advocate, so don’t keep our great Club and all the good work we do a secret.  Ask someone today.

Take care everyone.
Yours in Rotary
President Lee-Ann

JOHN WIKSTROM - GUEST SPEAKER

Speaker 28 April - John Wikstrom of ‘Magic Memories’

Born and raised in Invercargill and Queenstown, John went to Otago University and gained a degree in Marketing.

Founded 20 years ago by John Wikstrom and Stuart Norris, ‘Magic Memories’ began as a fast photo service for tourists on the Queenstown gondola.  Realising the future lay in digital technologies, not paper photos, Magic Memories restructured their business model to run a company within the attraction site or venue, and by installing 'smile stations', and providing staff who wear the attraction's uniform. The ‘attraction’ gets a share of the revenue.

Innovation is key, developing and integrating clever processes, products & technologies to extend each guest’s experience pre COVID19, Magic Memories had grown to operate at most of the major tourist attractions around the world.  John lived in New York for 3 years.

Now-a-days, John is a Queenstown resident and his current role is focused on developing and servicing key markets to foster continued growth.

The company's focus is on maintaining high quality operations at each site and their focus is finding people with the right attitude.

COVID-19 shut down the entire operation worldwide and they went from about 750 employees to 15.  They keep in constant contact with their suppliers and hosts and promised to pay every cent back that they owed them -and they did.

DUTIES NOTICES & APOLOGIES
PDG Derek Bulman works hard to ensure you enjoy a varied and interesting programme each week.  He also is the one who allocates the Duties.  If you have a duty and can’t attend, please make sure you find a replacement.

Meet & Greet - also includes ‘meeting set-up’.  Please try and be at the venue by 5.20pm to ensure enough time to set up the meeting area.  Instructions are in a folder in the Podium drawer.

The 3 Minute Talk - to make sure we run to time, please keep to between 3-5 minutes.

Apologies - Must be received to queenstownrotary@gmail.com before 12pm Tuesday at the latest.  Please be aware that you will be invoiced for your meal if no apology is received.  If you are unsure if you can make it each week, you can put in a permanent apology and let us know when you do come.  It is easier to inform the restaurant of an extra meal than the Club having to pay for meals not claimed.
