In the midst of the busiest ‘community service’ and ‘fundraising’ month for the Rotary Club of Queenstown we have the audacity to send to you, for your bedtime reading pleasure, the fortnightly Bulletin.  However that said, I trust that you will be sufficiently refreshed to read the bulletin, but if not, just look at the pictures.

The volunteer hours contributed this month across the club membership when considering RYLA, Meals on Wheels, The Home Show, the N.Z. Golf Open, I would suggest is very high and it would be interesting to plot the Ratio of hours contributed for the month across the membership compliment.  Maybe we can find this metric for interest.  Well done Team!

The RYLA Camp at Lakeland Christian Camp, Kelvin Heights has concluded. Organised by President-Elect Lee-Ann, and proudly Hosted by the Rotary Club of Queenstown, RYLA 2020 was a complete success.

While touted as a District event it was obvious, through the members contributions, that the Queenstown Club members were fully engaged and behind Lee-Ann.  They demonstrated their enthusiasm by volunteering to provide her support throughout the week where needed at the Camp, and also by their attendance (accompanied by partners) at the “Gala Dinner”.  I know your efforts contributed to the success of the event.  Well done Lee-Ann - you are a Star.

Well done also to Debbie and Darren Rewi, who ensured that the 28 attendees and volunteers were well fed and watered.

We should also acknowledge and congratulate our very own Huia Ackerman who was nominated by her peers as the top RYLAian for the 2020 year.  Huia will now go onto represent Rotary at International RYLA events.  Your fellow club members congratulate you Huia.  Well done, you are a fantastic ambassador.

This week we are fully occupied with the N.Z. Golf Open.  At the BBQ last Sunday evening for the Celebrity Cricket Match at the Millbrook Reserve our team was ‘Chef Supreme’.  The team working there were acknowledged and thanked personally for the contribution to the event by the Tournament Director - John Hart.  We are also further providing our culinary expertise on Tuesday evening for a BBQ for the Caddies, along with a Lunch BBQ for sponsors and an evening BBQ for the Golf Open Volunteers on Monday 2nd March.

In addition we are responsible for the car parking duties at the Golf Open at both Hills and Millbrook courses from Thursday through to Sunday Inclusive.

The proceeds raised from the car parking will be distributed to the 4 worthy community organisations as recommended by the Board and approved by the Club.

Thank you to Ashley for driving this fund raising initiative.

The ‘Home Show car parking and main hall entry’ fund raiser has seen excellent support from the club, with members generously volunteering their time to fill the 26 roster slots required across the 3 days of the event.  This has raised circa $1,150 for the club.
Thank you Bruce and Pat Jefford for again co-ordinating the organisation of this event.

Can I take this opportunity to express my sincere thanks to all club members for so generously gifting both your time and talents  to ensure the success of all of these events.  Thank you.

Looking forward, under the leadership of Director Keith McIntosh and the Membership Committee, our meeting on 10 March will be held at the Lakes Hayes Pavilion and will include a thank you from the Rotary Club to both ‘Duck Race’ and Rotary Club Sponsors, as well as the launching of our ‘Corporate Membership’ initiative.  I encourage you to diary this event and come along and mix and mingle with our team of generous sponsors.

The next Board of Directors meeting will be held on Monday 9 March.  I will update members on the key decisions at the first opportunity.

Keep up the great work team.  I really do appreciate each and every one you.

Nga mihi mahana
Ross

2020 RYLA CELEBRATION

RYLA 2020 was held 2 weeks ago 9 - 14 February at the Lakeland Park Camp, Kelvin Heights.

28 young leaders from around the Rotary District attended and they experienced a full-on week of speakers and activities.

There was a fantastic turnout by supportive club members at the Rotarians BBQ which kicked things off on the Monday night.  Thank you all for your support at this event.  Thank you also to all of the members who volunteered each day.  Knowing you were there to help if required was a relief for me and you helped make everything run smoothly.  The grocery items everyone brought helped to make 3 hampers and these will be given to the Queenstown Women’s Refuge.

We were extremely fortunate to have 2 amazing counsellors who dedicated their week to RYLA.  Eden Skipper and Simone MacKenzie, are both ex-RYLAians and both are from Christchurch.  Their RYLA experience was invaluable and they added so much extra value to the programme.

Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves, especially when I got them up at 4.40am to go on a hike to watch the sunrise led by Steve and Tracy McLean!!  Although not too thrilled at the time, especially when I may have mentioned they could have a sleep in, they did enjoy the view and watching the sun rise over the Remarkables.

Another highlight for them was the food!  Darren and Debbie Rewi catered all week and continually amazed and wowed us with the meals.  Outstanding.

Everyday there were 3 or 4 speakers on a wide range of topics and they enjoyed a few hours behaving like kids again at the ‘The Playground’, out by Arrowtown and also challenging themselves on the climbing walls at Base Adventures Remarkable Park.

To cap off the week, we had the Gala Awards Dinner at the Holiday Inn.  They presented their Community Service Project, “Natural Disaster Management Plan” to us.  This project was in conjunction with the Emergency Management Otago (Civil Defence).  We also enjoyed a laugh watching their entertainment skits.  Another feature of this night was the announcement of who received the most nominations to be their “RYLA 2020 Representative”.  This is the person they thought best embodies the values of RYLA.  They voted, unanimously for our very own Huia!  Our girl did really good and we should be very proud of her.

The weather was brilliant all week and they enjoyed a lake swim most days.

We have now caught up on our sleep and I have been in touch with them.  They are still buzzing and keen to visit their sponsoring Clubs.  Our Club will hear from (fellow and now RYLAian) Huia Ackerman and Jamie Robertson, a lawyer and sponsored by Mitchell Mackersy. They will speak on March 17th.  Be sure to come along and hear them.

I am now already thinking about 2021 and have booked the camp!  I am looking for people to join me on the committee.  As I will be Club President for the next camp, I need at least 2-3 people.  Please call me to discuss and find out more.  Ph 021 343 506.

THANKS!
