Hello everyone, and I hope you're all staying safe and well in lockdown Level 2.5!  As we have seen, the risk is still high in the North Island and the unlinked cases popping up in Auckland is creating some concerns.

The government and Health Department is encouraging us to wear a face covering when we cannot maintain physical distance from others.  If we are around people we do not know, it is a good idea to wear a mask.  Face coverings stop droplets spreading when someone speaks, laughs, coughs or sneezes.  They are one way we can protect ourselves and each other. In some situations, we legally must wear a face covering, for example on public transport, inside retail businesses and public venues.

As we can now "mix" our bubbles, I am suggesting that a return to face to face meetings can occur from Tuesday 14 September at the Holiday Inn.  Please let us know, in the usual manner, if you are not going to make it (an apology).

If you don't feel comfortable about attending, it is OK not to attend.

See you soon

Yours in Rotary
President Jason

THANK YOU FROM BEN BAKER
Ben recently attended the Bluelight Life Skills Course in Burnham.  Ben is generally a shy and reserved young man, who now has morphed in to this confident and enthusiastic young man.  Ben’s mum, Krista, who penned the email below, is just gob-smacked at the change in him.  She's over the moon!

The Life Skills course is held over 4 days at the Burnham Military Camp.  It is supported by the NZ Police and the NZ Defence Force.  We have another 3 boys lined to go (COVID19 permitting).  This is a life changing opportunity for these students.  Ben has been invited to speak to the Club once we resume and we are in Level 1.

Hi Kayla and Lee Ann,

As we move back into normality I am picking up the threads of life before lockdown.  One of which is to say a big THANK YOU to you all for enabling Ben to take part in Bluelight.

Ben thoroughly enjoyed the experience and returned full of confidence saying things like:

"Mum, do you think I am being more mature?  Do you think I have grown up a bit?" (since being on the course).

He was also regularly asking me if I thought his bi-ceps and shoulders had got larger because of all the press ups and PT he had been doing on the course.

He absolutely loves his t-shirt and wears it with pride anytime he can.  Always sure to point out to whoever is around the 'NZ Defence Force Youth Development Unit' writing on his sleeve.  Saying "Thats soo cool isnt it!"  He has been running a few times during lockdown - always choosing to wear his Bluelight t-shirt - I think you can see the pride in the photo above.

He was also fascinated with the instructors who had careers in the forces and enjoyed the camaraderie with all the other youths that attended.

The activities sounded fantastic and Ben still likes to give small details details about being in the antartic vehicle or up the trees in the assault course when talking online during lockdown.

Thank you again for this amazing opportunity for Ben - he truly enjoyed the experience.
