Thank you to members who were present at the Club Assembly on the 13th August. I hope you found the evening to have been of value and you were granted sufficient opportunity to contribute.  From that evening we were able to advise you of the Member Service initiative with the Chamber of Commerce.

This extends the Clubs membership of the Chamber to each of you so take advantage of the activities offered as you see fit.

The Rotary Club of Queenstown has also been named as a finalist in the ‘Spirit of the Wakatipu’ Awards.  Our nomination in the Spirit of the Community category has been selected as a finalist and the announcement of the winner will be at a Gala Dinner on September 14th.

The 11 tickets purchased for the Gala Dinner have now been snapped up.

The membership present also supported the recommendation to change our Tuesday night meeting venue from Wild Thyme to Holiday Inn off Frankton Road.  This will take effect from Tuesday 3rd September and will become our regular home.

Some of our members are going to extraordinary lengths to avoid Rotary meetings and Kerry Dunlop has dodged a speaking slot to be in Dunedin Hospital by claiming a dodgy knee.  Ashley Adams, not wishing to be left out, has unceremoniously launched himself off a grassy knoll and broken his leg.  The good news is both will survive.  As you know “one-legged blokes are a pushover” and so speaking slots will be awaiting them both on their return I would suggest.  All the best to them for a speedy recovery.

John Taylor and Darren Rewi have also introduced themselves to our medical professionals.  It is great to see them both back at Rotary last week so take care you two.

We continue to think of Richard Cunliffe in Wakari Hospital and we wish him well for his recovery.

Then we have the holiday makers, Stuart MacLean who has had enough of organising speakers and has ducked overseas for a few weeks, while our Pauline Hazlemore recipient Derek Bulman is unashamedly lounging around on a beach in Noosa while being disciplined to ensure that he keeps the fluids up.  Neil Dempsey, along with Brian and Kerry Dunstan, are also enjoying the delights of life over the ditch while David Tait and Gabrielle Schou have taken Europe by storm but will be back soon.

We look forward to their return.

At our next meeting on 27th August Hanna, our Rotary Youth Exchange student, will be our speaker.  The meeting is therefore open to partners and friends so come and enjoy hearing our lovely Exchange Student, from Sweden, speak.

Take Care Rotarians - see you next meeting

Cheers

Ross

CANCER SOCIETY - DAFFODIL DAY

We are assisting the Cancer Society this coming Friday in raising funds by ‘manning’ our stall at the bottom of the Mall outside Wilkinson’s Pharmacy.

Geoff Dalzell still has hourly slots to fill at 9 - 10am, 1 - 2pm and  2 - 3pm to partner the other person in each slot.  Please all Geoff on 442 5474 or 027 527 5474 if you can help.

NEW VENUE FROM 3 SEPTEMBER

Note that from 3 September, our new ‘home’ will be Holiday Inn, Goldridge Way (off Frankton Road and Goldfield Heights) - the former Goldridge Hotel.

Holiday Inn don’t wish to handle cash entry so we will be paying our meeting fee by credit card. Cash will still be required for fines.  Note also that the attendance charge including meals will be $25 (from 3 September).

UPCOMING SPEAKERS

We have our calendar almost full up to December.

Two nights we wish to invite our partners and our ‘Friends of Rotary’.

10 September: Mayor Jim Boult – an opportunity to hear Jim’s update and further aspirations and to ask questions pre the local body elections.

8 October:  MP’s Hamish Walker and Kanwaljit Singh Bakshi – a similar opportunity to hear from our local MP and ask questions of he and Kanwaljit.

MOVIE FUNDRAISING OPPORTUNITY

Movie fundraising opportunity – ‘Ride Like a Girl’

Our club has the opportunity to run another movie fundraiser night in October and raise funds for our contribution to the Rotary Foundation. We have held 2 successful nights in recent times for movies ‘The Post’ and ‘Bohemian Rapsody’.

Will you support it  (subject to the date suiting your availability) and bring friends? Please respond to Queenstown Rotary@gmail.com if you will support this event on a Rotary night during October (date to be determined).

ROTARIAN VISIT TO SOUTH ISLAND NZ

Hello Fellow Rotarians,

My wife Karen and myself are planning to visit the South Island of New Zealand for our vacation leaving Denver, Colorado, on November 13th and returning to Denver on November 30th

We would love to be hosted for a couple of days with local Rotarians.  We are both runners and, if you know any running clubs that we can visit, that would be great.  We both love the outdoors and would love suggestions about to see ‘of the beaten track’.

We stayed with Rotarians when we visited Denmark two years ago and that was the highlight of our trip.  My wife’s father immigrated to the USA in the late 40’s from Nakskov and we visited his ancestral home.  He passed away a number of years ago.  We plan to fly into Christchurch and rent a car.

ROTARY ACCESS TO CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

President Ross has obtained an agreement that extends the Club’s membership of the Chamber of Commerce to all our Members at no additional cost to us as individuals.

Members of the Rotary Club of Queenstown now have access to all Chamber of Commerce functions as Chamber members, and the membership cost is included in your current Rotary Club subscription.

Where an event or training seminar includes a cost to all attendees, Rotarians will be charged the same as Chamber members.  This also extends to include staff of members.

It is hoped that Rotarians will take advantage of this opportunity to attend Chamber functions of their interest.

The Chamber logo will now appear on all Bulletins same as is afforded our Club Runner sponsors.
